My first five RPGs played (I think): 1. White box D&D 2. Holmes Basic D&D 3. AD&D (1st ed) 4. Villains & Vigilantes 5. Champions

6. Amber 7. AD&D 2 8. D&D 3.5 9. RuneQuest 10. Pathfinder (There was also a very simple system I created for some one-shot who-dunnit adventures I wrote. I should rewrite those and commission some art from my artists and self-pub them. One day, when I have spare time, brain, and energy.)

⭐️ SNOOZE ⭐️ The Tiny Angry Witch dislikes mornings just as much as we do. It's authentic stop-motion animation. We'd love to have more time to devote to these, so if you know any eccentric millionaires, let us know! Written, built, animated, voice and scored by 4 x people (and 1 x Witch)

If anyone else has a Synology NAS they just released DSM 7.4.1-90080 Update 1 and you should install this RIGHT NOW especially if your NAS is exposed to the Internet in any way whatsoever. This fixes a just published and very severe vulnerability. #synology

This was interesting to me - i know how it worked in my day, when I did my national service in the 90s, but hadn't looked into how the new new system works. (New new because between the end and restart of conscription Sweden had an all professional armed force, I believe).

I was contacted by a translator who said they loved my work and asked if they could try to sell the idea of a collection of my stories published in both translation and the original English to a publisher they knew. All legit, and the book got great reviews in Germany. This was pre-AI though.

Editors are drowning in submissions. There is no shortage of authors. Nobody is contacting randos to ask about more goddamn books. It will never be true.

How long until a car manufacturer (Volkswagen? Probably going to be them, right?) claim the built-in AI in their cars means they can't be held responsible for what their cars do due to faulty breaks or something?

Been there, done that, didn't get a t-shirt, but we had just potatoes to last us through winter and spring, and to plant the next crop. There would be frost on the ceiling of the earth cellar we stored them in during winter, but the potatoes didn't freeze, so it worked. God I feel old!

Ten years ago, I was at a meeting of reenactment combat trainers (many manly men!) when one made a really inappropriate comment. I rolled my eyes, but another man said "That's a bit rapey, mate" and then changed the subject. It was as easy as that. And as hard as that. I try to follow his lead.

Happy Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov Day to us all and now more than ever remember that the Computer Said Yes.

Happy Stanislav Petrov Day He passed in 2017. As Encyclopedia Britannica puts it, “He is survived by his two children, two grandchildren, and the entire human race.” If you don't know his story, please take 3 minutes now to learn it. @gchalliance.bsky.social @docsforclimate.bsky.social

Glad to hear it. One of these years I'll manage to get there and spend the weekend in the Viking camp.

UK Games Expo has banned generative AI art, text, and merchandise across all NEC exhibition halls, bringing the convention in line with broader British tabletop standards. Standholders face removal or bans if their products aren't made by humans. #UKGE

If I was cynical I would expect AI companies to continue to "accidentally hack third parties without being instructed to" until they are nationalised. That's the only way they could get off the tiger they're riding.

After the Incident these are no longer open to the public. A replica have been carved into the chalk of Royston Cave in Hertfordshire, which should be far enough away to be safe.

hookland.bsky.social@hookland.bsky.social

In the tunnels under Coreham there exists an almost unrelenting graffiti. Carved into chalk walls are crowned saints, unsheathed swords. Depictions of the crucifixion alongside sheela na gigs. An enfolding of sex, death and salvation that the town council has failed to turn into an attraction.

"self-centred men who are argumentative, stubborn, disagreeable and unempathetic are much more likely to own a high-status car such as an Audi, BMW or Mercedes."

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

“Why do BMW and Audi owners often seem to drive like idiots? Is it the car that makes them behave aggressively behind the wheel, or are specific types of people drawn to such cars as well being more likely to break traffic regulations? Research at the University of Helsinki provides some answers.”

I'm playing this JRPG which takes place in both the distant past and the present, and one party member just went "Welp, I really like this girl we've helped here in the past and I feel I can make a real difference, so I'm staying here with her" and I went there in the present and found their grave.

When I was a student, I worked as a hospital cleaner in the summers. It was quite active work, physically, but not something that taxed me intellectually. I used to joke that I came in, got changed, put my clothes and brain in the locker, did a day's work, and changed back, brain still fresh. 1/2

I might be physically tired, but I still had mental energy in the evenings. Coding is the opposite, leaving me mentally rather than physically tired. You'd think keen AI users wouldn't get mentally tired, but the ones I see appear to be more dulled, as if they had less energy to begin with. 2/2

Oh, I haven't read that since I was a teenager, and then I read it in Swedish translation. I should go and see if I can find an electronic copy in English.

Phil Foglio@thephilfoglio.bsky.social

#books Today's book is C.S. Forester's "The African Queen". An old-fashioned "Adventure story" that holds up delightfully well. Everyone knows the excellent movie with Bogart & Hepburn (And if you don't–go watch it) but the book itself is amazing on a whole different level, and is a joy to read.

Outgoing Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristofferson reminds me of David Cameron. No personal vision for the country, just "I'd like to be PM", and he leaves with little more legacy than having legitimised the far right.

Very interesting, and good to know. I hope that learning about this leads to understanding, and understanding to acceptance.

Repost with your home river. I lived next to the Indalsälven River until I was eight. Dad worked at one of the many hydropower plants along its course. Then we moved to an island in the Storsjön Lake, which Indalsälven feeds into and runs out of. The hydropower plants regulate its water level.

Question for non-Australians: Does your culture have the well-known phrase “the good scissors”? A pair of sewing scissors reserved for cutting fabric, distinct from the everyday scissors, used for everything else. Children were always warned against and admonished for using “the good scissors”.

Hey, @camestrosf.bsky.social, have you included Descartes robot daughter in your history of robots?

Odd This Day@oddthisday.bsky.social

Tragically today, it’s the 386th anniversary of the death of René Descartes’ daughter Francine at the age of just five—to which he responded by building a robot daughter he took everywhere with him until she was murdered by superstitious sailors, hastening the philosopher’s own death Well... 🧵

Went to see the latest Spiderman film. Was good. Hadn't been spoiled at all, so was very surprised once the villain's name was revealed. The twists and reveals were good, the setups for coming films in the MCU were not out of place. Young Tom has bulked up a bit, but not unreasonable so.

See? I told you to vote for A Girl and her Fed! Look what we could have had! Right. We'll all nominate SideQuested volume 1 next year, okay?
