The government is using the record turnout in the first half of voting hours (45%) to try to mobilise its own supporters, by warning them of high participation by its political opponents, and by Arab Israeli voters in particular. www.reuters.com/world/middle...

I am slightly optimistic for Lula’s chances, mainly because my Brasilian comrades are not dooming right now. I take the view I shouldn’t be more pessimistic than my local comrades, if only for my own mental health. If we are all wrong we can deal with that heartbreak in a few weeks.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Call in the neo-Marxists to help rebrand universities as 'factories for the social production of knowledge and stratification.'

Charlotte Lydia Riley@lottelydia.bsky.social

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

This reminds me of patterns in other industries, for example in textiles. First European countries undercut cloth production, in places like India, but a few decades later it was Europeans going bust as the former colonial market started to out-produce them instead.

Just as Europeans are considering more protectionism against China now, back in those other 20s, the 1920s British textile manufacturers called for a Commonwealth protection for Manchester's mills. (It didn't work)

"A belief in military force as the sole ingredient for success has enabled a lazy and destructive foreign policy that ignores the will and motivations of both allies and adversaries. Such thinking also elevates tactics above strategy." Great piece by @jkdemp.bsky.social

Our first batch of Greek yoghurt, hung in cheesecloth at 6am to let the whey drain out. Very pleased with the results. Made with fresh Holstein-Friesian milk from a local farm vending machine. Literally milk on tap. We’ll use the whey in our compost bin and to spray our berry plants.

Dozens of Jewish and Palestinian student activists disrupted Ben-Gvir’s speech at Tel Aviv University today, by standing on chairs and chanting “Fascist, get out!”

I learned today that sunfish are shaped that way so their fins can perform the same role as turtle flippers, and allow them to dive and feed at deep depths.

The third largest city in Canada just rejected the cryptocurrency clown and his billionaire pro cop council and swung hard left. You're looking at a mix of communists, socialists, soc dems, progressives, and a liberal or two here

In case you missed it: feedback and shares appreciated for the stories in this thread.

Once witnessed one of the most eminent professors in the field completely fail to make coffee and pour himself a mug of plain hot water instead. "Keynes'd my coffee" to mean "didn't add any coffee to the coffee" has permanently entered my vocabulary to this day.

my 6-year-old daughter and 81-year-old dad both got their first whiffs of teargas today, on the fringes of protests in brussels dad was there in '68, barricading the university! still never had teargas it feels like the cops are out of control now, extremely trigger-happy with so many weapons

Very cool stuff, though my instinct is that the sword there looks like a bearing sword - a oversized sword used as a ceremonial object and never intended for use in a fight. Still really cool (but important not to let bearing swords color our sense of what real battlefield weapons were like).
