Cycling to work, school & play should be quick and convenient and not put you in mortal danger. Here will be noise about this healthy transport choice.
Another petition has secured a debate in parliament:

The max penalty (of imprisonment) for causing death by driving should not be increased. But how we regulate drivers and whether we let those who repeatedly risk harm to continue driving deserves debate.

I think many will be disheartened. I know some MPs are in favour of lifetime bans in certain cases. How can we persuade those in power to reverse their motonormative thinking here?
Oh Christ! A man is dead after a car is driven into a supermarket.
Maybe the driver or an innocent victim just doing their shopping. The article doesn't say.

- Every additional 100kg of vehicle weight was associated with a 6% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality;
- Every additional 10cm of height was associated with an 11% increase in odds of pedestrian fatality. "

It’s a mystery to us - there’s an increasing body of evidence that #ActiveTravel is good for people’s health and wellbeing and reduces demand on the NHS but it’s rarely presented as such by the DfT @heidialexander.bsky.social@walkridegm.org.uk@ategov.bsky.social
Large, heavy, powerful cars are capable of creating death & destruction if driven badly or recklessly but we’re forced to share the streets with them. Time for some restrictions as protection from other people’s bad choices. www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/2666095...
I am delighted that the Transport & Connectivity committee approved the shift to make Hotwells & Harbourside's primary roads 20mph!
Thank you to all the members of the community who have campaigned for this for years - I have been very proud to support you in this.
I am pleased to support the proposals for new 20mph speed limits in Hotwells & Harbourside, which I hope will be approved at committee next week.
The local community has been asking for safer roads for a long time; I'm delighted that our @bristolgreenparty.bsky.social administration is delivering.
Labour Wakefield Council were wrong to introduce 2 hours free parking, and Reform Wakefield Council are correct to remove it.
The ineffectiveness of free parking as a tool for driving growth - and effectiveness of an improved walking/wheeling experience - cares not for your political allegiances.

Paris has announced €200 million for safer cycling and healthier streets 🙌🚲
@paris.fr has unveiled its new Plan Vélo 2027–2032, with an ambitious investment in cycling infrastructure and a commitment to Vision Zero - eliminating deaths and serious injuries on the roads.
Excellent news: work has begun on Newham’s first fully protected Dutch-style intersection, with free left turns for cycling and straight-across crossings for pedestrians. Let’s hope for a speedy construction!
Construction has started on street improvements at the junction of Romford Road at Woodgrange Road.
Improvements will include:
- New segregated cycle tracks
- Safer and easier pedestrian crossing points
- A new traffic light system to aid traffic flow
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods - 'more research need'..
Well from 2022 to 2025, funded by the NIHR, we (& colleagues) did that research.
And we have 10(!!) peer reviewed articles so far, with more on the way.
Here's a summary of our papers so far (all open access so get reading):

Maddening things about air quality policy and action in the UK:
1. Even if you get to "legal levels", these are pretty weak beer.
2. Air pollution is always treated as an environmental issue – when really the impacts are all about health.

Removing motor traffic from city centre streets creates places where people linger, relax, dine and enjoy being outside.
Places where families can safely ride their bikes, people of all ages can get safely around, and where streets are dominated by people, not cars.
Campaigners say “the reduction in rat-running traffic means it is safer for people to walk, wheel or cycle to the shops or the bus stop. That’s visible in the data, and in the people you meet in the streets.”

For decades too many junctions in London haven't had pedestrian signals - TfL is upgrading these to make it safer for people crossing these busy roads.
Good to see the A217 London Rd / Cricket Green junction completed.
There's obviously a whole chain of issues that need sorting to tackle the clone/ghost plates issues, but allowing #OpSnap submissions for plates with clear illegal coatings, spacings, fonts etc. would be an easy first step for the latter part - very easy to spot
www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
"An investigation uncovered more than 130 official suppliers in the UK willing to sell cloned number plates"
This is such a clear example of where the UK is good at creating laws, and often terrible at enforcing them. Laws are pointless if they're not implemented and *seen* to be implemented.
Paris is showing how to make cities healthier and more child-friendly.
More than 300 school streets are now car-free and give space to trees, play, and safe walking/cycling. The aim goes far beyond traffic safety: cleaner air, less noise, and more independence for children.
“The bicycle is the tool, not the goal.”
The goal is healthier people, happier communities, more liveable cities, and the freedom to get where you need to go without relying on a car.
The bike just happens to be one of the most powerful tools to get there.

Before piloting an aquatic Lotus Esprit in The Spy Who Loved Me and a Volvo P1800 in The Saint, Roger Moore rode a bicycle in the Sirdar Knitwear catalogue, and wore a magnificent turtleneck sweater while doing so.
Happy #BicycleBirthday, Roger Moore!

Could cycle tourism boost the UK economy?
My latest CI.N column explores the significant economic headroom building cycling infrastructure with a view on attracting tourists can gift a Government. Some data from Germany and NZ makes for enlightening reading:

You're not imagining it, cars are getting bigger.
In fact, cars are growing approx. 1.2 cm longer and 0.5 cm wider and taller per year.
The bigger the car, the bigger the visibility problem for drivers.
This is a radicalising case in reaction to dangerous drivers. It's that bad.
Once you read this, you'll not want to stop until every dangerous driver and those who aid and abet them are behind bars for a very long time and banned for life. TW: remorseless brutality
