Indignant over the media's indignation. Mostly focused on New Zealand. "The media should report true things in proportion to their importance" – Jamison Foser www.dailyindignation.com

Sorry but if Stuff isn't using an automated process to literally take a politician's statement and turning it into a headline then that means a human being who works there is fine with promoting misinformation? Like, why else would you run this as a headline? Because "SEYMOUR SAYS"?

The Electoral Commission tells Stuff's Emma Ricketts what the truth is, and yet Stuff STILL allows Seymour to lie his ass off. He even mockingly ends with "and I won't discuss it any further because my sole goal here is to get lies into your paper" and you STILL lead your website with it?

The right-wing have weaponised the media's misguided obsession with "neutrality", because their side knows they can just say lies & the media will publish it. The left just don't tend to lie like this. So the media effectively rewards politicians lying, the one thing they claim they hate!

RNZ & journalistic failure becoming synonymous, particularly in political reporting running this "just reporting what was said" during an election is fucking wild Seymour even says he doesnt know! simply ask an expert instead of carrying misinfo attack lines on behalf of a far right politician??

The media once the coalition wins again, having spent the last 2 weeks of the campaign on gangs: the public voted for privatisation!

ⓘ Kaiwhiu ⓘ@aotearoa-nz.bsky.social

Former Health NZ Chair Rob Campbell also warned about a manufactured crisis to excuse privatisation in Oct last year. Don't fall for their bs. The govt has deliberately underfunded health to create the 'need' to privatise core services. #NZPol

Hi, I'm NZ Herald Senior Political Correspondent Audrey Young. I allow right-wing politicians to say the literal opposite of reality in my columns. I and my employer claim I'm not biased. Subscribe for more!

Trump Unleashes Racist Tirade That should be the headline in every newspaper.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "Somalia -- 98% of the people here now from Somalia don't work. They don't have to work because they steal so much. They all have a Mercedes Benz. Low IQ and they live better than you do."

How brave of the NZ Herald to publish this editorial the day after voter enrolment closed, when it can have literally zero impact. (And it's *still* not criticising the government for changing the law to make it harder to vote, it's just the usual "better civic education" pleasantries.)

Something I've always loved about media is: the journos all work hard, the commentators churn out columns, the editors make calls over what to cover, and every single one of them believe it doesn't make an iota of difference, because it's always some void that decides what becomes news.

This post is unavailable.

Whenever someone says "oh but it's a story, the media has to report on it" YES but they don't need to do this, where on a Friday afternoon the members of the press gallery literally interview their own keyboards in order to keep a story going. They do no have to do this, but they choose to.

The New York Times wrote articles that were like "the impossible-to-characterize elusive politics of Elon Musk / he's lost interest in politics" right before he became *literally the largest GOP donor in history* the next election cycle. Twice. Two times!

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

This would be the most any person has donated in any election cycle. And #2 is also Musk, in 2024.

Seymour openly lied, on camera, to Mihingarangi Forbes, about having any connection to the Atlas network, and our media gave a collective shrug. This has never been about catching politicians in lies, that's just what the press gallery tell themselves so they can sleep at night.

kyle@kyledchurch.bsky.social

so now we're going to have 2 weeks of media pressure on ACT Party associations with a convicted pedophile right? Because Seymour has openly lied about this for years, and this is pretty good evidence that he was being dishonest

I for one am thrilled our mainstream media is watching independent media like Big Hairy Network and turning it into front page stories. I'm sure that will continue even when it doesn't hurt the left's chances in an upcoming election.

As far as I can tell, the NZ Herald still has not published a single editorial about the changes to enrolment which is absolutely going to suppress the vote this election. They have just done their third editorial about vandalism of election hoardings, however.

Jolisa Gracewood@nzdodo.bsky.social

The scale of it. Astounding: "At the last election, more than 450,000 people enrolled or updated their details after voting began, including 110,000 on election day itself. This time, anyone who misses the 25 October deadline will have their vote excluded." #nzpol rnz.liveblog.pro/lb-rnz/blogs...

Mark tries and is nicer than I'd be, but Healy doesn't listen; he's only defensive. He dismisses "fascist" as an inflammatory "adjective." No, it is a noun, and by refusing to use it, the #BrokenTimes fails to report on and explain the imminent peril to democracy under Trump. The Times fails us.

Mark Jacob@markjacob.bsky.social

🧵🧵🧵 The NY Times posted a 15-minute video today in which I got to tell NYT what’s wrong with its coverage. They said they saw my critical posts on Bluesky and invited me to do a video with them to air my grievances. Weird, right? I didn’t hold back. I blasted their sanewashing of MAGA extremism.

It's definitely that time in the election cycle where the media acts like gang members aren't human. And of course, the current govt's way of dealing with gangs has led to literally more gang members than police officers, but sure, let's do this again.

The NZ Herald has reprinted Derek Chang's very good May story about the Mongrel Mob-run rehab course this govt canned, but the Herald appears to be trying to hide its verdict: it was hugely successful, and the Mob running it was a big factor in why people engaged with it. archive.today/kToiW

But being an arrogant prick is so unlike him

Thomas Coughlan turned up very late to a political event in Tāmaki where Chris Hipkins was speaking. Unlike other journalists, he took no notes, and when his phone was out, it was to play word games and scroll messages. No wonder his columns are so ill-informed. #nzpol

What I really love during election year and at every other time is think pieces by dudes framing pay equity as a choice/cost versus a basic inherent policy that any democracy should have as a given right - which also wouldn’t be framed as such if men were the ones primarily impacted by its absence.

Someone alert Thomas Coughlan

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854

While the Herald is publishing their (second) editorial crying about the destruction of election hoardings and imploring you to make your voice heard at the ballot box instead – because democracy! – here's a list of this govt repeatedly being anti-democratic, which so far have had zero editorials.

Back when he was PM, the NZ Herald would often use John Key as a kind of freelance vox pop, getting his "reckons" about everything. So to hand over their election debate to him to complain about left-ish policies is hilarious and right on brand for them. They've probably offered him a podcast.

And if you think I'm joking, this is the level of journalism we experienced when John Key was PM. Now and then a columnist would wonder how "Teflon John" was so untouchable, and it's like, yeah, I wonder why the public view him like a slightly embarrassing celebrity.

A stolen car was found in Ellerslie, and towed to a facility in Mt Eden, which happens to be near a new train station. So perhaps dial down your hard-on for dramatics, Stuff, and change your headline so it's clear someone was not trying to bomb the train station.

3 years on, how do we feel about The Post's Associate Editor assertion that Act's attacks on Māori were "one person's commonsense"? 'Cause from where I'm standing it looks like Hipkins was right to be concerned and actually Luke Malpass played a role in where we are today.

NZME will make a lot of noise this week about how much Labour's promises are gonna cost, and it's worth comparing to the noise the same journos made about the cost of the coalition's RONS (over $56b) – i.e. when they even bothered to mention it, it was hidden behind innocuous framing and paywalls.

You can't tell me Stuff, which ran days-long coverage about Charlie Kirk and frequently runs very-online, American-centric content, doesn't know that "globalists" is a antisemitic dogwhistle now used by the far-right. And yet Winston Peters continues to say it, they repeat it, and... nothing.

Stuff's editorial judgement continues to be non-existent. I know, let's tease which slur Hegseth uses! We won't censor it in the video so it'll be a nice surprise for our trans audience! And we won't provide any context, just the 30sec clip! What is the point of this (apart from some ad clicks)?

I love how Mike Hosking is all "don't waste time on ideological stuff if it doesn't grow the economy" but the second the govt potentially faces some economic consequences for their ideological decisions he calls it treasonous. You can deny reality all you want, Mike, but it always wins.

By "got busted on equity" Mike means Labour promised to restore equal pay for women, and by "CGT promise appears problematic now" Mike means he tried to attack Hipkins with incorrect figures. It certainly was a bad week for someone, Mike.

This is a good headline! It refuses to amplify the false claim by using "wrongly", and includes the truth in the headline for everyone who doesn't read the full story (which is mostly everyone). It's also compelling clickbait for those ad guys. Now do this all the time!
