Incredibly important to share far and wide this election. As we’ve seen in consistent appalling headlines, and in lived experience on a daily basis, women and children are not a political priority in New Zealand. It’s very clear below who does have this top of mind - it’s vital to vote accordingly.

It's here! The Coalition for the Safety of Women & Children's Election 2026 scorecard of 2 halves: 12 new steps from violence towards freedom & 8 steps to halt & reverse current regression. Thanks @tepaatimaori.bsky.social @greens.org.nz @labournz.bsky.social for replies - at www.awc.org.nz/20steps

“Our nation cannot become a place where violent attacks are normalised.” 1 woman is killed by an intimate partner every 10 to 11 days in Australia. 1 in 4 men in Australia aged 18 to 45 say they have employed physical and/or sexual violence. The majority of perpetrators are men. It’s normalised.👇

What I really love during election year and at every other time is think pieces by dudes framing pay equity as a choice/cost versus a basic inherent policy that any democracy should have as a given right - which also wouldn’t be framed as such if men were the ones primarily impacted by its absence.

Currently on hold with the WINZ Seniors line on behalf of a parent - wait time: 40+ mins. I in no way trust they’ll call me back, so am here for the duration. Great our Government thinks seniors (or anyone else) have the kind of time to wait almost an hour to speak to anyone about their benefit. 🙄🫠

Right, I think we’ve accepted the fact that I’ve already supplied this info, and are now stuck on the fact I have not yet got a contract in place with someone they are presumably supposed to contract/pay directly, and that they have also not yet agreed to pay… because they wanted to assess first.🤔

We are now on hour three of this process.

50 minutes holding on literally and spiritually via a tour of four NZ artist songs on repeat… success! An email to send a form to! And then a two week wait (at least) for processing🫠 The lady I spoke to was lovely - this process was not. We need WINZ to be resourced and beneficiaries treated well./

The WINZ saga continues: I have now received an email requesting three comprehensive pieces of information I have already provided or are already on file, combined with an ask to log in to a portal my elderly parent doesn’t have access to because: internet. I’ve asked for escalation - let’s see 🍿👀

20 minutes holding on the second call to WINZ. All due respect to Dave Dobbyn but his music was not meant to be listened to in this way.

Florence Pugh has an eloquent, fierce post on Instagram re Cornell College - & a question very relevant to New Zealand’s judicial system: “Those that protect and lightly sentence men that rape and destroy, should be punished and watched closely. Why are you protecting someone that fiercely?” #nzpol

NZ Herald, we’re allowed to say “who was in for violating a restraining order”. “Sending a text message” completely fails to reflect the impact on the woman he was stalking for a decade. Ideally we would reflect on the decision to minimise his actions in this headline / doubt we will etc 🫠

Journalists are crowing 'what's new?!' because they have forgotten that there is a second draft of history, and don't seem to recognise that a book like this, is it. This govt has literally forced the TPU into the *school curriculum* in its ideological vandalism, well here's the primary reference.

The new book #DirtyWork by #NickyHager is the story of how Jordan Williams and the Taxpayers' Union orchestrated the use of racism in the 2023 election. Here's my take on what we lost as a result, free to all on my Hopetown substack now simonwilsonhopetown.substack.com/p/dirty-work...

This is vitally important mahi from @alisonmau.bsky.social and Zoë Lawton - a way to keep sexual assault victims safe while also seeking justice. H/T @davidfarrier.com for highlighting this. I've just made a donation. If you can afford to, please consider it too www.webworm.co/tika/?ref=we...

Tika was formed by barrister Zoë Lawton and investigative journalist Alison Mau. Frustrated by statistics that only 10% of survivors ever report, they identified a tech-led, collective action model as the best way to break systemic barriers, and support survivors as they seek justice.

All these elected officials do is go on cable news to blab about problems we know really well because they dedicated decades of their lives to not solving them.

Raskin made a holy shit observation on MS Now this afternoon: Since taking office, Trump has made a million dollars per hour for himself. Every hour, he has made more than twice the president’s annual salary.

I love this so much.

Never been to the opera before? Now’s your chance. We’re giving away 70,000 free tickets to the @metopera at the iconic Lincoln Center. Go to on.nyc.gov/opera to enter the lottery. There’s not a bad seat in the house.

Just noting it’s the Australian Greens pushing to ban smart glasses, and who have prompted moves to regulate. Something for New Zealand to consider as we go to the polls soon is who consistently looks out for women and girls - and who consistently does not, through silence, inaction or bad policy.

“We are calling on the Government to start an inquiry into the culture and processes at Work and Income…” Glad NZ Greens are calling for this. The harm Work and Income routinely causes has a long reach - and a huge impact, as evidenced here. Our systems should work for people, not against them.

Not sure if Brooke van Velden’s final speech to Parliament consisting of a roomful of not-listening people too busy panicking about Nicky Hager’s book launch at the same time and then limited media coverage because of the focus on the book is *chef’s kiss* or poetic justice, but why not both 🤷🏻‍♀️

“Why is the book called Dirty Work? First, to signal that it is a sequel to Dirty Politics. But also, because this network of hard right political groups is doing the dirty work for National and ACT against their political opponents…”

“Year in, year out, the Taxpayers’ Union and allied hard right groups assist the National Party. The Taxpayers’ Union raises millions of dollars to undermine National’s political opponents and in return National gives legitimacy to the Taxpayers’ Union.”

It’s really nice to know that someone is thinking about the health of our democracy as opposed to the current status quo of actively undermining it at every possible opportunity

What that, you say? ANOTHER *astounding* Green policy launched on a Sunday afternoon to influence the upcoming news cycle? Glorious: they are *extremely good at this.* (Also, I'm looking forward to Labour and National trying to concoct their own versions of this.) #nzpol

Apparently Chlöe Swarbrick beating Nicola Willis in a poll on who New Zealanders trust to manage the economy came as something of a shock? Not to me. I’ve been listening to how Swarbrick talks about money. There’s something interesting going on. 🧵

So my new article asks why Swarbrick’s economics sounds so unusual in NZ politics, and why voters may be responding to it. Ok fine, I eventually mention Warren Mosler. andrewdicksonnz.substack.com/p/chloe-swar...

Flu cases never need to surge. This is a choice. They could be grumbling at low levels or even moderate levels. Surges cause preventable deaths in ED due to waiting times blowing out and staff shortages. Stop flu surges. 😷

Our population is ageing and soon we will have more people outside work than of working age. We aren't having anywhere near enough babies to balance that and babies take time to reach working age, despite what you've been told. This is a global trend and means there's a new gold rush underway. 1/n

Dystopian that “art is political” is grasped when applied to the Hunger Games marketing campaign featuring Fearless Girl but not when the message is applied in practice, when, say, someone speaks out against the atrocities being committed by Israel. If you’re neutral in situations of injustice, etc
