The big difference is that solar+battery is fit and forget. Once it's installed, whether from China or anywhere else, it's yours and you are independent. No more payments to anyone. With fossil fuels you're an addict, dependent on your dealer who can make you dance to their tune.

Good to see more discussion of the upcoming very large increase in the headline Ofgem price cap figure. It's worth noting that the increase is going to fall very heavily on the unit rate of gas as the unit price of electricity gradually decouples with more British wind and solar power being built.

Dan Grey@dangrey.bsky.social

Electricity will rise from 25p/kWh to at least 33p. The ratio of electricity price:gas price is set to fall from 4:1 to 3:1 as the construction of new wind and solar power continues to disconnect the price of electricity from the price of gas.

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

The cuts to Radio 4 and BBC News, dropping RuPaul's Drag Race (not my cup of tea but I know people who love it)...

Josiah Mortimer@josiahmortimer.bsky.social

The cuts being made at the BBC are unforgivable. They are putting it into a death spiral. The weaker it gets, the less people will want to support it. And yes, this is an issue for the Government, which likes to pretend it's not their problem. It is.

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

BBC neatly pivoting from focussing on the Jackdaw gas field to the massive new Rosebank oil and gas field. It's actually an unusually well-informed and balanced article, correctly pointing out that the oil would be sold abroad and giving plenty of quotes from @tessakhan.bsky.social

By no means the most pressing issue today, but... The Govt's announcement this morning they will be "slashing red tape" by pausing a requirement for small firms to file/publish profit-and-loss statements - which was due to come into force in April 2028 - is bad news for anti-corruption efforts.

BIG jump in China's exports of solar in September, far above any earlier month, except the export-tax-driven wave in March. Solar kit with annual power output equal to 10 large nuclear reactors exported in just one month. Media reporting wildly off as they used wrong metrics!

I think it was an air compressor, and when I heard it as it was coming up the roads towards me I thought ooo that lorry sounds poorly 😄

There's also an Ford Transit e-ambulance running around Exeter. I've not been able to find any press releases about South West Ambulance Service Trust getting e-ambulances, but I can tell you that it goes like s*** off a shovel (too fast to get a photo lol) Rear wheel drive FTW

Labour have more or less failed to repair any of the immense amount of damage the Tories' "austerity" did to Britain's public services between 2010 and 2024. That things are no longer getting worse is something I guess, but not the change we need

NEW: Starmer's public service inheritance was bleak. His govt made some progress improving services. But also launched a messy set of reforms Burnham has set out a positive vision but has a mountain to climb to deliver all his promises 🧵 www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/publication/...

It's worth acknowledging that, as Ofgem is aware, warm well-insulated homes are more expensive to rent or buy than cold draughty homes, and a lot of low income households are trapped in the latter. The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards for private rented homes are weak and too slow

Dan Grey@dangrey.bsky.social

Yes, although as with the no standing charge electricity tariff proposals, Ofgem is likely to recommend a block tariff with the *first* x thousand kWhs would be charged a higher rate to make sure costs are indeed recovered and as many people as possible contribute It's a rubbish idea tbh

Burnham promise to cut standing charges from gas bills is not straightforward: apparently they'll let energy companies recover same costs via the unit rate of gas rather than fixed fee consequence: low use - lower bills high use - even higher bills www.ft.com/content/8eda...

Ultimately everything has to be paid for 🤷. Maybe it'll get Burnham a few nice words in focus groups while only making the energy system more complex and more uncertain, and therefore more expensive

Personally I think removing cars from Stonehenge would be more worthwhile, but the Windemere tunnel has a better chance of being built. Why's that?

Because with a privatised water industry any new infrastructure is funded by private sector borrowing, paid off by customer bills With anything nationalised, such as the roads and railway, borrowing to build goes on the national debt and is paid off by taxes, leaving it at the mercy of politicians.

Note, however, that while by mass Jackdaw might supply as increase the UK's gas production by as much as 6%, it will only supply less than 2% of winter peak demand. bsky.app/profile/dang...

Dan Grey@dangrey.bsky.social

This article is total bull****. At full output Jackdaw could meet 1.6% of the UK’s winter gas demand. What is true is that Shell and Equinor have put over £1 billion into building Jackdaw and are now desperate for the government to license the 24 million tonnes of CO₂ it would release

Notably, the Jackdaw platform is tied-back (connected to) the Shearwater platform, which dates from the 1990s. Rosebank, however, is an entirety new field, in the Atlantic ocean west of Shetland, and would be tanker-served. No tie-back.

Not a surprise if this happens because tbh, Jackdaw is tiny Rosebank is the big one, which would result in ten times as much CO₂ being put into our atmosphere if approved

More CO₂ is released making electricity from from American liquefied natural gas than makeing it from coal. And the marginal supplier of gas to the UK is America. But that's an argument to stop burning gas – more wind and solar power, more heat pumps
