If closing surely the least expensive radio channel the BBC has (run by a tiny number of people, broadcasting the work of mainly dead people), bothers you, then why not sign this petition you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/sa...

Not sure how much money closing Radio 4 extra will save. I am happy to forgo my £22 a year from repeat fees if that helps.

Danny Smith@danny.is

Almost done with this iOS / macOs app which lets me record voice notes from my phone/watch/CarPlay and puts them and their transcripts on my mac. Next up: Using jev and/or claude to sensibly turn them into files in my Obsidian inbox.

It's so damm cool that my insane car-ramblings can wed their way into my obsidian inbox in a form like this

I wish there was a universally adopted atproto-based stock (of products in stores) lexicon I want this thing, I want to buy local, but where has it? A “we stock this”, and “we have it in stock” boolean for everything (by EAN, to start?) would be *so* useful in cities. Any POS providers here? 😅

Danny Smith reposted

Atmosphere update: atproto apps are growing 20% month over month, and last week we passed 1,000 daily active apps.

Ironic that a non-deterministic system has a relatively deterministic response to a prompt asking for a non-deterministic response.

that basically explains why AI stuff blows it’s like auto-tune for ideas, like yeah you hit the note but you lose the subtlety, the richness, the soul

Like it or not, AI is here to stay. It's too profitable to ignore. We can either let a few companies win and further increase the gap between the haves and the have-nots, or we can stake a claim on the future and build the web we want to see. One that benefits everyone.

I do wish more people would browse the Wikipedia articles of medieval European rulers. So many of them have sentences like “Charles the Stupid, Duke of Flanders, was campaigning in Burgundy when he contracted dysentery after eating apples. He died a week later at age 36.”

gentlemen, this is democracy manifest! what is the charge? enjoying slopgem? consuming a succulent chinese model?

Context: I desperately want to press a big "Record" button on either my Apple Watch or CarPlay and end up with the audio file on my mac WITHOUT ANY FRICTION. There are two things on the app store which do this but both are janky af. So: 1. Voice Memos should do this 2. Apple should let me make this

Danny Smith@danny.is

How on earth is Apple Voice Memos not available in CarPlay? Does Apple really thing it's safer for folks to dictate into their phone that to press a big "New Voice Note" button in CarPlay and just talk at the car?

From Apple's June '26 CarPlay Developer's Guide, which doesn't exactly fill me with hope they'll grant a "CarPlay voice-based conversational entitlement" to me for a personal app 🤷‍♂️

feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

Product design matters folks

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

This tweet is an example of why product management matters even more in a world where AI coding tools make it easy to ship more features and apps. What to ship and why is now more important than if you can build it, since with enough tokens you can build almost anything you want.

feels like there is a group of smart and well-intentioned people who long ago made up their minds that AI Is Bad, swore off using it, and now get all their info about AI from each other. not saying they're wrong that ai is bad! but i think they're gradually losing touch with what it is and does

I really wasn’t trying to start a fight with Prof. Bender but now that she has created a long thread subtweeting me and her disciples are all yelling at me, let me just say that this is the crux right here. She seems to respond as though I am describing something a priori impossible.
