"Freedom of maneuver" is a military term designed to distinguish between pacified and hostile territory in an occupation setting, in case that helps inform you of how the federal government views American cities.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

Military documents confirm that the LA operation today was a “show of presence” intended to send a message to LA residents about the power of the federal government. After staging with armed soldiers and Border Patrol agents on horse, they packed up and left after a short walk.

There's something deliciously ironic when someone tells a story about a nation that once led the world in science succumbing to religious extremism and dogmatism, and that someone is RFK Jr.

Just saw the Marist poll of Maine: Jackson 49-47 among LV's, but a whopping 50-41 among LV's. How is it that in a Dem wave year? How is Pingree tied 44-44 LV but +11 RV in this environment? Marist is smoking something powerful but for good or ill, I can't say. maristpoll.marist.edu/polls/the-mi...

There's supposedly a GlenGariff/Detroit News poll showing El-Sayed and Benson up a healthy amount but I haven't found an original source for it--just a Polltracker account on X. Can anyone verify this?

The closing argument for the entire Republican party is just outright, unbridled racism. I'm old enough to remember--hell, it wasn't more than 15 years ago--when if you said anything even close to this, you had to resign your seat. Now, it's standard-issue Republicanism.

Interesting approach by Mike Rogers to make his loyalty to Elon Musk & the oligarchy an explicit part of his campaign earlier this year. “When you stand with my Senate campaign today, you are directly shielding Elon Musk,” Rogers wrote. www.metrotimes.com/news/mike-ro...

We call for a full and immediate withdrawal of Russian forces, a return to pre-2014 borders, changes to the Russian constitution to limit the military to 100,000 personnel, a constitutional guarantee to withdraw from the CSTO, and immediate presidential elections under UN monitoring to replace Putin

Joni Askola@joniaskola.bsky.social

Ukraine must hold maximalist demands and avoid Russia’s classic trap: making outrageous demands while refusing to compromise, forcing the other side to make concessions and give Russia more than it deserves. Russia doesn’t deserve to get anything

Trans panic didn't do the trick, so Republicans are turning to eye-popping overdoses of Islamophobia as the last gasp

It's pretty clear that Yglesias was rooting for Bolsonaro because he hates the left, but rooting for Bolsonaro doesn't go well with the centrist median voter shtick, so he decided to couch his antipathy to Lula fans as a "how dare you take an interest in the world" form of intellectual superiority.

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

I think this becomes quite understandable in the context of an international fascist movement that has swept much of the planet in a decade, with horrifying and very extreme consequences for the entire species

The state that is furthest in its count, by far, is the Distrito Federal (Brasilia): 31% of precincts have been counted. Result so far? Bolsonaro is up 9.2%. Bolsonaro won the first round here 51% to 38%. His dad won the 2022 runoff here 59% to 41%.

As a follow-up to this, sure, be pissed at Turek, I agree with that. But save a good deal of hatred here for Chuck Schumer, who pushed Turek over the top when we could have had an anti-bigot like Zach Wahls as the nominee

Dante Atkins@danteatkins.bsky.social

1) I fucking hate Turek's bigoted bullshit, and so should you 2) a 51-49 Senate with Turek in it is a way better outcome than a 50-50 Senate where Republicans have committee leaderships and bring their agenda to the floor, not just on trans issues but every single other one. Both things are true.

The tank isn't dead. Mass armored maneuvers might be. Ukrainians use tanks in small groups or for direct fire against buildings or fortifications, with infantry and drone backups. It's called combined arms. Russia doesn't do combined arms, they just send people and equipment to die.

Secretary of Defense Rock@sodrock.bsky.social

The Ukrainians literally just used tanks in their most recent counteroffensive lol

I 100% believe that men who know for sure they are done having kids should get a vasectomy. There are a lot of advantages to it for everyone! But please don't make jokes about it or treat it as reversible. It is a surgery that changes your body permanently and is designed to be permanent.

In Vivek Ramaswamy's world, apparently being a childhood sexual assault victim makes you "flawed" and unqualified to hold office. Every fucking time you don't think Republicans have another level of depravity in them, they always show there's another level they can sink to.

MeidasTouch@meidastouch.com

NEW: Vivek Ramaswamy says Amy Acton being a victim of childhood sexual abuse makes her “flawed” while defending his ad featuring her estranged mother. “In politics sometimes it's a tough sport.”

It would be one thing if the NRSC sued. That would be one thing. For the GOVERNMENT to sue is quite another altogether, and is basically a five-alarm fire.

👀 WASHINGTON (AP) — Trump administration sues to block Alaska Senate race certification if Republican loses, citing candidate name confusion.

Greg gets to the heart of the problems with MAGA's future here, which is that Trump had far more going for him than the cruelty. He had his celebrity, his "magic businessman" appeal, and a perverse charisma that let people who didn't like cruelty support him anyway. JD and Vivek have none of those.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

The deeper reason Trump, Vance, and Ramaswamy are backing the vile rape ad is they think MAGA politics—the cruelty, the depravity, the viciousness—is still ascendant. They think doing this esesentially puts Trump on the ballot. Me and @jimswift.bsky.social on this: newrepublic.com/article/2169...

Which brings up another point. When people say "don't listen to the people who lost to Trump twice" the insinuation there is that Trump was a weak candidate, when actually he has been a historically strong one--able to turn a formerly low-turnout group into die-hards AND appealing to low-info voters
