A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

Just a reminder that there is no good data to support these uses in K12, we are just testing it live all on kids who won’t ever be these ages again and can’t get them back if we fuck it up.

"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt." Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn? MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

This show is so delightful. The popcorn episode is actually quite moving, an investigation of the small and loving ways people try to make other people’s experience better. That’s what most episodes are about, actually. Let’s help them afford health insurance!

The mainstream argument that teachers aren't capable of lesson planning and instructional design is a deliberate attempt to create conditions for more corporate control in schools, especially through ed tech. We should resist teachers being ventriloquist dummies for Cambium, HMH, and Sam Altman.

I would also add that classroom teachers benefit from gifted programs, especially in elementary, because they get the weirdos out of their hair, if only for a little while, while giving everyone the pretext that it's for students' benefit

Before I lose my phone for the weekend: Modern TAG programs are *intended* to be special needs programs for a group of kids who struggle with regular programs, not status or treats for bright kids with good grades. Profoundly gifted children are at high risk of a lot of bad things.

Here’s something you should know about minks: They have lungs and airways remarkably similar on a cellular level to those of people. They’ve spread flus and infected humans before with COVID-19. Right now, bird flu is spreading on a Utah farm filled with thousands of them… 🧵

Democrats do not fund curiosity-driven humanities research. They do not believe in doing so. They are unlikely to change their perspective any time soon. They will not, in their current ideological form, rebuild the NEH at anywhere near the capacity needed even given the chance.

Right now, public funding for academic research even in Democratic states is contingent on that research supporting for-profit economic development or job training. The other type of public funding available is for right-wing “civic” thought. Nobody is supporting peer-reviewed humanities scholarship

Trumpism has succeeded because his side draws up a passionate core and supplements it with gigantic media presence. There is no alternative to this. Goody-two-shoes "let's participate in democracy together" crap goes nowhere. You can only defeat fascist power with progressive power. /end

Policy idea to deal with "burdensome" traffic fines: If a driver is issued more than $1000 in traffic tickets, we should take away their license, thus ensuring they will not get any more fines.

Much of the modern digital world only exists because of human social norms. The Internet's backbone exchanges data at light speed because a bunch of regular folks, essentially, shake hands & agree to do so. Lots of fragile, vital infrastructure only survived because nobody decided (yet) to knife it.

Jason Koebler@jasonkoebler.bsky.social

Security through obscurity is a terrible principle but in practice a lot of things didn't get hacked bc people ignored them, or didn't know they existed, or just generally got missed. AI makes it easy to probe all of these things at scale + makes it easier to find/develop exploits

Your takeaway from the Israeli statement should be to remember that the 3.4 million Palestinians of the West Bank live under a permanent and unaccountable military-security state that has existed for nearly sixty years, and that every major political party in Israel is committed to maintaining it.

Brad Lander@bradlander.bsky.social

The Israeli Foreign Ministry is lying. No coordination was required, and we were never told that it was. We were not in a restricted security area. We did not pass any checkpoints.

East Potomac costs $42 to play and hosts thousands of people each year. A lot of the players are beginners. A lot of them don't have that much money. A lot of them are black. This is the course Donald Trump has decided shouldn't exist, and in the past, he's been fairly explicit about why not

In my most curmudgeonly moments, I don’t see why presenting the prose output of a machine built on mass theft as your own scholarly work should be evaluated less harshly than old school plagiarism. Traditional plagiarists at least had to identify and evaluate the works they were going to copy.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

It’s striking how much of the higher ed organizing on the political Right is focused on the epistemic content of teaching and scholarship - and how there is basically not much of a response to that from either scholarly associations or the political Left.

Once we allow part of our work to be automated in the name of clearing our plate, then one of two things happens: the empty space on our plate is quickly filled with something else, or administration decides automating workflows means they can spend less on faculty lines

This question applies to lot of professional organizations right now.
