The British Fantasy Society does not allow the use of generative AI in any of its spaces. For more on this, read the interview with outgoing chair Shona Kinsella from earlier this year. This position has not changed since last week's AGM. ⬇️ britishfantasysociety.org/its-a-cheat-...

But this is an extremely fair, and very good, point.

Basically: the document doesn't have anything tangible to say about historical infringement as part of training, which makes it pretty aggravating, and people are clearly (and rightly) aggravated. (For which read: utterly furious.)

Dear short fiction readers/reccers, some Ideas: - seasonal rec lists - themed rec lists (holidays, mushrooms, robots, space, mushrooms, ghosts, timey wimey stuff, mushrooms) - build your own Best Of anthology TOC As always, in the words of @forestofglory.bsky.social, reccing is Critical Practice!

I've had queer (cis) friends say that they "just want to enjoy the new adaptation uncomplicatedly", but the sad truth is that that is not possibleβ€”and never has been. I'll shout it from the rooftops once again: Starve her of oxygen. LET πŸ‘ THE πŸ‘ IP πŸ‘ DIE πŸ‘. Grieve it, then let it go COMPLETELY.

Letting the franchise still live in your head and your conversations, even if you are not actively giving her money, perpetuates this idea that your nostalgia is more important than what's happening to trans folks right now, and it's hard to see that in 2026 and not think it's a deliberate choice.

From Vera's video: "Being a fan of Harry Potter or of anything else [...] does not define you unless you let it. It's always a choice. It's a choice you are continuing to make. And it's a choice that you could stop making." Send this to your HP-pilled friends and family. Let the IP die. [fin]

The discomfort is a sign of your brain resisting change, and it's inevitable, particularly if you're of a certain millennial vintageβ€”but you must sit with it and push through, because only on the other side will this become so abundantly clear that you'll wonder why you resisted in the first place.

Like Vera mentions in the video, this particular franchise DIRECTLY funds harm to trans peopleβ€”there is no debate on this: it's happening, she's said so herself. Queer fans (in the UK especially!) have no recourse; we MUST stand with our trans siblings, loudly and proudly and without conditions.

I've spoken about this at length at various convention panels: how hard it is to entirely excise something that was once deeply important to you, how it might feel like grieving a loved one or even letting go of a part of yourself... The pain is real and indisputable, but it's necessary. Feel it.

Can't recommend this episode enough if you've been following news about AI. It's a clear-eyed look into the human dynamics around the industry, what motivates the most fear-inducing headlines, & how the AI problem might be tackled (actually enforcing existing regulations, for a start).

My husband and I both had weird, semi-apocalyptic dreams before waking up today. Different flavours of apocalypse, but both involved explosions, collapsed bridges, and for some reason, Scotland. We've been watching Twin Peaks so I don't see an imminent connection... kinda bizarre though, innit πŸ€”

Over at #KneelBeforePod we're doing a catch-up podcast series where we review all the Marvel movies we never got to review in real time, starting with the first #XMen movie! This is a massive point of nostalgia for me as it got me into comics + superheroes as a tween. Links to the episode below! ⬇️

@ my uni creative writing lecturer whose weekly genre discussions were like "ehh, all these books are the same, genre conventions are dumb, only litfic matters" he literally marked my murder mystery crime novel dissertation project down and said it would work better as a literary novel. πŸ™„

Joanne Harris@joannechocolat.bsky.social

Your occasional reminder that performative sneering at whole genres of fiction is not a sign of intelligence, nor is performative misery a sign of superior talent. Read what brings you joy. No-one else gets to decide or to control what that means to you.

... the chapters I submitted were an interrogation of a murder suspect and a connective chapter leading to the next clue. the protagonist was a detective. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ as a writer mostly drawn to genre work myself, this disdain at the commercial success of non-litfic genres just read as misery and jealousy.

you don't have to read these genres if you don't like them (heck, I don't really read litfic as it's not my jam) but dunking on them at every turn doesn't make you better or smarter than those who enjoy them. it just makes you look weird and sad, and says way more about you than you realise.

Alt text is useful for everyone! My sight isn't too bad and I use them all the time for things like: reading the text-heavy screenshot in a comfortable way, understanding a joke pic that I don't have context for, finding out where that beautiful beach actually is, (...continued)

If anyone is wondering, I don't use generative AI. It offers me nothing useful creatively and nothing trustworthy as research. The environmental impact is appalling and the companies who developed it stole copyright intellectual property knowing that is illegal. GenAI is dishonest at every level.
