I think about international policy, politics, conflict, and political corruption. Trying to harness Machiavellian cynicism for the common good. What *is* so funny 'bout peace, love, and understanding?

Quincy’s been wildly irresponsible and/or sloppy since the moment they launched. I put them in the same “if it looks like I agree with them I need to quadruple check my sources and reasoning” category as FDD.

Joe Stieb@joestieb.bsky.social

The quincy institute doing multiple events with noted far right lunatic joe kent is wildly irresponsible

It’s interesting that China may end up gaining lots of brownie points from Latin America *and* some human rights advocates out of this.

May his memory be a blessing.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Unironically yes.

Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff

The entire Cheesecake Factory brand is “gaudy decor with giant servings of yummy unhealthy food and/or booze”. That’s ideal special occasion dining for a lot of people, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s also not relevant to the quip.

ex-Lethality Jane@lethalityjane.bsky.social

I think it's fine that Barack Obama made fun of The Cheesecake Factory but also you are kidding yourself if you don't think there are Americans who consider The Cheesecake Factory to be fancy, special occasion dining. Multiple things can be true.

I think most Americans would consider me a crazy person when it comes to this stuff. My bare minimum would be: 1) Corporate veil only applies to contract disputes with no allegations of tortious or criminal behavior. 2) Fines, fees, and damages should be paid by seizing stock.

The Questionable Authority@questauthority.bsky.social

*Megacorps should be defined broadly, using effective control. We've seen billionaires use multiple companies they control toward common ends plenty. Also the "corporate veil" needs a more holes than it has right now; there should be a "oh, come on, just look" test for alter ego, minimum.

Important to note that this only applies if the ICC already has jurisdiction—a big hurdle for Article 5 prosecutions of US nationals in most cases. Article 70 prosecutions are a separate question, and one in which the question of national prosecution is less of an issue.

Nathan Newman@nathansnewman.bsky.social

In regard to sending Trump and company for prosecution at the ICC, Trump issuing pardons is actually what makes them eligible for prosecution under international rules regarding the ICC- something this thread from a month ago highlights. bsky.app/profile/nath...

It’s ‘buck nekkid’. I will die on this hill. The rest are obviously correct.

Merriam-Webster@merriam-webster.com

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

last month, a cat named Rolo survived a medical emergency after receiving a blood transfusion from Gin, a cocker spaniel belonging to the attending veterinarian. Rolo recovered and they're both doing great now. what a hero. what a comrade. workers' solidarity transcending centuries of enmity.

Matthew Yglesias continues to say that talking about ICE and excessive force in immigration enforcement helps Republicans. He is obviously wrong about this and refuses to acknowledge the data. Way past time for everyone to update their priors on this.

I’m old enough to remember “don’t be evil”. That seems to mean I’m really, really old.

Now, this is something Tolkien would have something to say about. What the fuck are we doing here? I'll summarize books and academic papers for you and answer your relationship questions, no clearcutting required. Make them plant a million new trees. Two million.

Speaking as someone who’s been i the water with sharks quite a few times: Sharks are waaaaaaaay less violent than people. Most sharks just want to chill and be left alone, and often as not don’t even mind if you’re in their space as long as you’re not harassing them.

Da Real Juicy J (10/13 🥳)@realjuicyjay.blacksky.app

This is actually hilarious 😂 🤣 The man makes some valid points, tho Shark, at home just minding its business, then here comes this stranger

The thing that gets me about this (aside from the obvious) is that it’s wrong even if you’re generous and assume he meant the pre-iceberg Titanic. You absolutely could have turned the Titanic around overnight. You could have turned it around quite a few times if you had all night.

JD Vance on the economy: "You don't turn the Titanic around overnight"

The quip is very effective, but @abdulelsayed.bsky.social should really hire me to help him prep answers for the substantive parts of his international policy answers.

El-Sayed on JD Vance: First of all, Ohio State owes that boy a refund because he clearly didn't get anything from his education there…

For the large majority of our existence as a species, humans made music as a near constant part of day to day life. Communal singing is embedded deep in our DNA. Music-making is one of the most accessible experiences there is, and for those whom it is not, large data models won’t help.

As someone with a JD and not a member of the bar, I’m not a stickler about what other people call me, but would never represent myself as a lawyer. Because it’s *against the law* to do so. Something that was pretty well drilled into my head in my first semester as a 1L.

Josh Chafetz@joshchafetz.bsky.social

4/ Someone with a J.D. but who isn't barred isn't a lawyer for the purposes of representing clients. But it doesn't strike me as obviously wrong to describe that person as a lawyer in common parlance, where the description is probably being used to indicate that they are knowledgeable about the law.

Schiff is definitely not naïve. This is a performance aimed solely at California vineyard owners, and he’s probably indifferent to how Canadians react. If the wine growers associations were convinced that this makes Canadians *less* interested in buying from California, I suspect he would stop.

James McLeod@jamespmcleod.ca

A Democrat visiting Canada and making his first appointment with Danielle Smith is a really odd choice, which reveals either a startling naivety about Canadian politics or motives for the trip that are not first and foremost about understanding the Canadian perspective.

This is insane and disgusting on so many levels, but for some reason the thing that jumps out at me is that Amodei is seemingly unaware that infants have their entire lives ahead of them. If you’re going to start down this stupid rabbit hole at all, how to you skip over “babies become adults?”

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

Dario Amodei of Anthropic is Very Normal and Can Be Trusted With the Future of Humanity: “…in my case I'd say that I think an adult death is perhaps 2 or 3 times worse than an infant's death.” blog.givewell.org/2010/06/03/m...

Counterpoint: I follow international affairs very closely, and have no need for twitter. Anything that pops up there is reported elsewhere, usually with better sourcing.

sarah jeong@sarahjeong.bsky.social

my hot take is that x is in fact still important for anyone following international affairs. but given how noticeably and publicly brains get pickled from x-immersion, i think anyone with a medical history of being a dope (for example, crypto-optimism) should practice self care and abstain

I also have a ton of experience with extreme propaganda environments. There’s a huge difference between observation, engagement, and immersion. If you’re engaging and immersed, it’s almost always a matter of when and not if it gets to you, no matter how prepared you are. bsky.app/profile/sara...

sarah jeong@sarahjeong.bsky.social

but also? i suspect that people who seriously engage with international affairs have experience with extreme propaganda environments, and while no one is immune to those corrosive effects, they have a more hardened sense of right and wrong

“Don’t hang out in Nazi bars” is a pretty good rule, really.

Melissa Ryan@melissaryan.bsky.social

I left X because it wasn't Twitter anymore. It was a platform for Nazi white supremacists run by a nazi white supremacist.

White guy: “The culture at the Nazi bar today is remarkably friendly and inclusive.” No it isn’t. There are non-Nazis having “normal” conversations there, but they’re choosing to do so in a Nazi bar. If you like hanging out in a Nazi bar, don’t be surprised when people judge you for it.
