"Qun’s first instinct was to call the police. It seemed clear to him that this chatbot had killed his daughter; wouldn’t they want to know?" Wow, here we are. And we have do nothing governments.

Political economy came into being as a natural result of the expansion of trade, and with its appearance elementary, unscientific huckstering was replaced by a developed system of licensed fraud, an entire science of enrichment.

Yes, our big goal is to "convince"* people capitalism sucks, which many instinctively know from their own experiences with their bosses, landlords. There are already people who want to reform capitalism to make it more humane; often partner with them. But its important someone wants to get rid of it

*Or more accurately, organize people to defeat and replace it. I don't tell the ACLU to wait a generation on free speech. I get what their whole deal is, agree or disagree. Ours isn't that complicated either, and there is a current program with its own website and lit fwiw ("Workers Deserve More")

Gotta say that PlayStation games and Latin American Telenovelas being almost the only Greek language dubs that exist because there are such strong markets for them there is pretty funny and great. Globalization wins again.

Eight years ago today, 11 members of Pittsburgh’s Jewish community were killed in a horrific act of hate. Today, we honor their lives, remember their loved ones, and stand with a community forever changed by this tragedy. May their memories always be a blessing.

Was looking at old maps. Maybe the US wasn't ready for a Vlach Aromanian Greek Orthodox president but Dukakis did very well in rural western PA. He won a higher percent in Beaver, Greene, and Fayette counties than he did in Allegheny. This started to change in the W Bush and Obama years.

We took a lot about deindustrialization here via the rapid 1982 steel industry collapse but there was also a slow burn decline of non steel manufacturing, like the VW plant turned plasma TV plant turned whatever else it was in New Stanton. See Reorganizing the Rust Belt and The Next Shift for later.

Props to the two YIMBY groups who endorsed Nithya Raman even though she (thankfully!) supports universal just cause for evictions and rent control. Pittsburgh instead has a right wing, tech bro YIMBY group (Pro Housing Pgh) who are anti rent control, anti IZ, and endorsed a GOP state rep candidate.

I know hes a good athlete but I am convinced I could hold Zohran to well under 40% from the field.

People abroad don't understand the level of interference Meta & bots had in these elections. 5 days before the election a far-right politician posted a fake news video that got 157 MILLION views on Instagram in 24hs. For reference, GTA 6's reveal trailer got 90 million views on YouTube in 24hs.

In 1959 Nikitia Kruschev came to Pittsburgh and as traveling by remarked that St John Chrysostom in the Rusyn/8 Mile Run "was one of our Orthodox churches" (no one corrected him out of politeness.) Andy Warhola had grown up at that church but had moved to NYC. (Train going through Homestead.)

There was a nationwide steel strike happening at the time that helped lead to the relative prosperity of the steel towns that lasted from 1960-1982 or so. Mayor Gallagher gave Kruschev a key to the city. I'm not sure what happened to it but we don't have walls anyway.
