Incredibly stupid idea. The voters got it wrong once -- who's to say they won't get it wrong again? Loads of Russian-funded £££ would be in play again, to sew chaos and lift Farage into power after all. Astounding hubris on @andyburnham.bsky.social's part. www.theguardian.com/politics/liv...

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

Had a long conversation yesterday with a senior publishing exec, responsible for journals, re the huge rise in manuscript submissions. Very challenging for editors, obvs – so, how to address it? Their response: delegate more to the journal’s co-editors, and then let the reviewers decide.

In other words: shift more work to people who aren’t getting paid. As per the mantra: publishers thrive via unpaid labor by academics. With inundations of AI-generated papers, publishers go for: let’s have more of that.

Seems worth a hearing: if it doesn't seem possible to ban the frats, at least make them co-ed, they can only stay if they admit women. A second-best remedy, perhaps, but better than the usual medley of half-measures. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/16/o...

Trying this post one more time. Tempting to interpret lack of replies to mean that my question doesn't have a good answer. Will resist... It's relevant not just to GSC. Beck/Katz (1995) gave us "panel-corrected standard errors". What they don't say is: correct for what purpose??

Question for stats/quants people, re bootstrap standard errors in the context of generalized synthetic control (Xu 2017). The approach is: parametric bootstrap via resampling the residuals (in a series of leave-one-out runs), to get the “conditional variance of the ATT estimator”.

Polanski said he couldn't focus on the "Zionism is racism" motion b/c he had to focus on campaigning. But in abdicating his leadership role he undermined his Holborn prospects *and* his claim on the leadership role. I don't think this guy is meant for politics. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

My question: what sort of uncertainty does this procedure address? The procedure gives a distribution, and I gather the standard deviation of that distribution is then used as a standard error. But Xu doesn’t say anything about what the source of the “error” (uncertainty) might be.

If GSC is used for analysis of (say) countries, or US states, there isn’t a “sample” per se, so it’s not sampling error. What else, then? I don’t see how this quantity can tell us anything about other sources of uncertainty (e.g. measurement error). It strikes me as a quantity without a purpose.

Sounds like my local UCU branch.

What does it mean to be a member-led party when the Greens have 230,000 members but only 1835 voted on the Zionism Is Racism motion? Doesn't seem like you can claim the result as the iron-clad democratic will of the membership while dismissing the concerns of actual democratically elected MPs

The provost of Dartmouth, at which I teach, has been using AI to write both academic papers & national op-eds, according to brave reporting by @thedartmouth.bsky.social. Many students are already bitter about AI. This leaves us as faculty no ground to stand on. www.thedartmouth.com/article/2026...

The fact that the Fairford suspects are all British Nationals proves nothing. I’m a British National and look at the damage I’ve already caused to the UK.

FAFO latest (#Sociology version): -- FA: write a report intended to inflict reputational damage on your own discipline* -- FO: learn from esteemed colleagues that your own reputation is in tatters I can't imagine ever going to campus again... *yes, it isn't even her discipline, by some measures

So, the default decision is: desk-rejection, no external review (unless there's sufficient basis to decide otherwise -- rare.) General position: it's hard enough to get reviewers already, and we can't let AI slop grind the gears to a complete halt.

Great idea. Time-consuming, though. What I take from this thread is mainly that my instincts on desk-rejections are very likely not wrong.

Reply from Banks seems to confirm he did mean that British citizens should be stripped of citizenship+deported. Reform policy is to strip Commonwealth nationals with permanent status of indefinite leave to remain (exempting European nationals with ILR). Now Banks wants to deport citizens too.

Listening to Ed Miliband is an unfamiliar experience: a UK politician speaking with courage, directness, a sense of history, eloquence (mostly), and conviction rooted in the right values. Why can't we have more of this?
