“There's an old saying in Clausewitz—I know it's in Jomini, probably in Clausewitz—that strategy is the use of battles for... for... battles get you the thing you want.”

James@gravitysra1nbow.bsky.social

It's like what that German guy always used to say. Sustained kinetic strikes in lieu of a cessation in hostilities are negotiations by other means

The answer is just that the average American asks: “if he did it, why isn’t he in prison?” Or they roll it into a general cynicism about how Hillary Clinton murders people and the elites harvest adrenochrome and call it a wash.

I think as a society people just don't want to face what it means about us that Trump is a rapist and even though that was public information he was still elected President

Jaw-dropping achievements in stupidity, my goodness. "I wonder why China, an authoritarian state, does not put up museums decrying the legacy of their authoritarian regime. It must be because he was good." What a fool. Incredible.

People in the replies acting like the current Cuban regime isn't authoritarian are irritating. The recent Cuban asylum seekers that Trump is deporting aren't wealthy plantation owners. Be serious.

Angie Nixon@angieforfl.bsky.social

I say it plainly: I do not celebrate Castro. I call Cuba what it is, an authoritarian regime, and I will fight for the Cuban families who fled it. Meanwhile, Ashley Moody backs deporting Cuban families back to the regime they escaped. #AngieforFlorida

Shameful. Congress should pass a revised version of the Russia sanctions bill with no Presidential waiver authority.

Extremely funny to go "I can't believe the Poles didn't insitute reforms that would have upset Moscow" with a header image of What Happens When You Upset Moscow

Jacobin@jacobinmag.bsky.social

In October 1956, a protest movement in Poland brought a reform-minded communist leadership to power. Unlike Hungary, Poland managed to avoid Soviet intervention, but the opportunity to democratize its political and economic structures was missed.

It certainly says something™️ when the DSA’s “red line” prohibits association with pro-two state solution groups and does not prohibit supporting Russian imperialism.

At the 2025 DSA national convention, DSA voted to pass Resolution 22, which sets red lines for candidates and members. Candidates who don't support BDS or work with Zionist groups are ineligible for endorsement & members who actively oppose BDS could face expulsion. docs.google.com/document/d/1...

You have to actively oppose antisemitic things claimed by your allies, and acknowledge that there are a lot of antisemites in the movement and be honest about why that is. You don’t get to feign ignorance about the people you’re empowering and the implicit triple parentheses around Israel.

To be clear (because this is necessary on this site): Israel is not immune from criticism. It is just that the existence of pervasive antisemitism—especially in Palestinian/arab nationalism—means you have a particular responsibility to oppose it if you are engaging in those things.

Of all the ethnic conflicts in all the world, it’s not plausibly a coincidence to become a firm partisan in exclusively the one where the enemy is the only Jewish state. People who are ready to call out dog whistles in any other context close their eyes to it when it’s towards Jews.

What bothers me is less the strong opposition to Israel itself, but the deliberate obliviousness to the pervasive antisemitism in the anti-Israel movement and the obligation to not be a fellow traveler if you’re going to take part. You have to do more than denounce antisemitism in the abstract.

i like that the big divide on this post is whether people read it, correctly, as "*run explicitly* on banning online gambling" or whether they ignored the modifying verb and adverb and read it as "i don't think anyone should ban online gambling"

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

i don't think anyone should run explicitly on banning online gambling but i do think that a democratic-led government should just quietly take steps to undermine the industry and create an inhospitable regulatory environment

You can’t understate the fact that the New Deal/Great Society economic model produced stagflation. This real failure was used to attack social welfare as a whole by its ideological enemies. In terms of political economy, it should be clear why voters generally prioritize growth over equality.

Waldo@waldo42.bsky.social

Something happened in the 70's that crystallized politics (and many other topics) into a new set of assumptions and priors. It gave rise to Reaganism and completely crushed New Deal Socialism; Dems that eventually reemerged were and still are centrists scared of their own shadows.

Guys, we can win, we can also lose. The future is unwritten. More than that, it is changeable by us. You can go out there and chase the future you want. The cure to anxiety is not “everything will work out okay” but “I can make it work out better.”

politiBOO!@politiburb.bsky.social

No. This is dooming for nothing. Lula *did* end up cruising to re-election, it was called an hour after polls closed. The fact that he managed to pull that off when everything was pointing to a Bolsanaro win is not terrifying, it's inspiring. Stop looking at things through the worst possible lens.

This is a good primer on Israel's political situation going into tomorrow's election. But I'd like to go deeper on something he only touches on, which is that part of the reason for Israel's electoral doldrums (and resulting geopolitical chaos) is its broken political system bsky.app/profile/avis...

Boston’s chief planner is a true believer in the San Francisco model, in which you make it impossible to profitably build apartments by-right so developers are forced into a politicized discretionary negotiation with the city, which relaxes the rules in exchange for below-market units.

It’s more that “Labourization” is the wrong thing to look at entirely, especially in the context of red states. These candidates are to some extent or other running against the party (or at least the party consensus) and it’s not plausible that their positioning will shift the party’s position.

To your point, I think this is advantage of US parties being a coalition rather than a party in the parliamentary sense. There’s no discipline to impose, so attempting maneuvers like abandoning part of the coalition are protracted battles, which are unappealing.

Biden’s position on it is also relevant. A major party figure staked out a pro-trans rights position early and then won the presidency—that leaves a legacy.

Even if Democratic grandees thought ditching trans rights was helpful, they can’t cajole the Senators from deep blue states to do so, and primaries keep candidates fairly representative of their constituents and vulnerable to pressure by even small parts of the coalition.

I think the difference is more fundamental: there is no ideologically liberal impulse left in UK politics. Americans—for better and worse—want the government to stay away, from both bathrooms and their Medicaid.

The lessons of fighting for gay rights (& the similar freedom movements that have defined the base) really are deeply ingrained, otherwise we'd be Labour already

it seems to me that pardon power cannot be plausibly interpreted as allowing the Executive to disregard the laws of the Congress (and, indeed, the Constitution) unless impeached. There are no rights if the president can order them violated and pardon the violaters.

Jeff Stein@jeffstein.bsky.social

Scoop: White House lawyers are weighing preemptive mass pardons for junior staff, sources says Under discussion: Pardoning everyone involved in deportation, war, or trade policy www.washingtonsun.com/whitehouse/w...

The purpose of pardon power is plainly not to allow criminality on the part of the executive, and attempts to use it as such should be considered intrinsically invalid. There is no separation of powers (and no judicial review) if the president can enable whatever lawless acts benefit him.

The thing about ME2 is that while it doesn’t move the main story forwards, it’s excellent execution of the “putting together a team” conceit. What it actually moves forward are player companion stories, which are both satisfying in their own right and paid off in ME3
