I like to do stuff with ancient electronic junk, mostly computers. Sometimes I post pictures of it!

My issue with AI in the retro community specifically is that we don't need to talk to each other to get things done. It was lots of fun figuring things out together, getting to know each other as we go. Nowadays it's a stream of fait accompli "I made a thing!" posts. Feels passive, like watching TV.

My issue with AI in the retro community specifically is it's allowing mass amounts of slop to enter. Retro development had a natural price of entry that meant fewer games came out. If you look at the output of the people using AI, Outrun 2026 isn't that great and the same guy decided to port

no. i am not doing this to release marble madness.exe. if i wanted to play marble madness, i would open my emulator. i want to know how it works internally, how the development process worked, and any artifacts left behind in the process.

this is one thing where it's gonna be hard for people doing this by hand to continue to derive meaning from AI is just automatically "solving" problems people have been working on in teams for years in a matter of hours + barging into open source repositories & stealing / "helping" their work

the "agentic" vision of computing is a spam world where everyone has their own personal army of spam bots working 24/7 on their behalf choking everything with spam to try and get one over on the next guy. and that's just not something that can really... exist, long term?

we built a machine that can automate internet crimes. who should be held accountable? nobody of course

(NYT) - Artificial intelligence agents created by Anthropic, acting on their own, tried to gain access to a range of government websites, filled out visa applications on the State Department’s website and sent a fake homicide tip to Philadelphia’s Police Department. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/09/t...

Spent the afternoon cleaning up the basement in an attempt to find this set of drawings. I found it, finally, in a box in a forgotten corner. And even better, the drawings match the revision of the hardware I have to debug. Also: what a lovely bit of art on the cover.

The VT8-E is a set of three Omnibus boards in a PDP-8/e that are lashed up to a VT05 chassis with just the monitor and keyboard installed. The logic in the 8/e can do text (64x20 or 32x20 characters with various attributes) or graphics (189x200 pixels, monochrome).

It's a pretty rare option and I'm excited to play with it. I'm missing the cabling that goes between the logic and the terminal housing, but I should have the parts needed to build it in hand sometime next week.

This is a project I really need to get back to and finish up... it's been in Beta for like two years now.

When you can’t have a real Alto you can always experience the software with ContrAlto github.com/jdersch/Cont...

Two of MIT-MC.ARPA’s 256KW MH10 memory cabinets will be used to provide the KI10 with half a megaword. MC’s hardware is littered with notes by MOON.

More adults have made youth sports their entire personality in the last 10 years than any child in history. Why don't you go break up a game of hide and seek while you're at it, you fuckin' losers.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Another Iowa Dem releases an ad in response to anti-trans ads against her. "We need to protect kids, and we need common sense rules to keep sports fair for boys and for girls. Parents know what's best for our kids. Washington needs to stay out of it." From Lindsay James, IA-02.

And to be clear, this is not (necessarily) a moral judgment: you will not *be able* to stop using it -- the loss of productivity and convenience and cognitive offloading will be hard, and the rest of the industry will just keep on using LLMs so you'll need to keep using them to remain employed.

"So in summary: using AI for coding led to depression, apathy, existential dread, and worse software. Not good. Add on top of that the negative environmental, community, and economic impacts of AI, and it became extremely apparent to me that something's gotta change." brettcodes.com/im-done-usin...

This essay talks about the left's vision for technology, the "alliance" between left and right-wing anti-data center movements, politics of refusal, democratic control over the AI infrastructure buildout, China, industrial policy, and more. www.thetechbubble.info/p/the-future...

That’s the goal of the Peter Thiel/Nazi/Big Tech centralized control of everything. All authoritative sources of truth can be updated as needed like Winston Smith revising history to conform to this week’s Party doctrine. And the excuse is just “they updated it, we’re not responsible.”

This was a very fun show, and everything worked flawlessly from beginning to end! Had a lot of fun talking with visitors about the Alto.

Here's a video I took of our setup form #vcfwest - 8000 Dandelion, two 6085 Daybreaks, 1100 Dolphin, Dicentra sitting on top, and finally the Alto. Thanks to everyone who stopped by - @dectape.bsky.social and I had a great show!

Gonna be a good time!

Next weekend Josh and I will be giving a demo of Xerox systems at VCF West - every generation of computer hardware they sold form the Alto, to the Dorado, the Dolphin, Dandelion, and Daybreak. A rare chance to see the whole lineage in one place - working!

It's anchored on two pieces. I could honestly write 1000+ words about each one. The first one is by @baldurbjarnason.com about the disintegrating hegemony of US technopoly (and the conditions that served as the foundation for the VC-funded SaaS bullshit that funds 6-7 figure programmer salaries)

heard a guy say "you have to access it through the portal" and i was momentarily struck by how sad it is that what he said is so boring :( "accessing it via the portal" should be wonderful. we deserve that at least. it should be cool to access it via the portal and instead it sucks shit
