Due to challenges with the current funding climate I won’t be reviewing clinical psych PhD applications this cycle. Sorry to miss out on the chance to mentor more amazing ECRs but hopefully things improve in the coming years.

Excited this measurement manuscript is out. 6+year effort to address what we saw as limitations in how we use the PHQ-9. Work by @dawsonhaddox.bsky.social in collabo w my partner in (measurement) crime @eikofried.bsky.social. If you use PHQ for weekly assessment or symptom-level analyses, read this!

Dawson Haddox@dawsonhaddox.bsky.social

🚨 New preprint! Across six studies (N=2,467), we evaluated three modular adaptations to the PHQ depression measures: separating double-barreled items, adding irritability and low-libido items, and supporting past-week assessment. 🧵1/7 osf.io/preprints/ps...

@lluaces.bsky.social with another banger! Thoughtful research design plus amazing writing equals another paper that will go on my lab’s required reading list.

1/ @sadcatlab.bsky.social research "in press" at Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. In 274 adults with 7 weekly measurements, we find that cognitive change in CBT predicts subsequent symptom change, controlling for time-invariant confounds + linear trends osf.io/preprints/ps...

Those of us who were trained at CTSA by Edna Foa will be very familiar with this. I love Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)! I've licked the bottom of my shoe many times when working with OCD (and still do it 2x per year when I teach my undergrad and graduate courses on CBT). And much more...

Just grabbed the doorknob and licked the palm of my hand for the benefit of a therapy client. That's what you call dedication!

Eiko is the best! If I didn’t have a family I’d quit my job and move to the Netherlands to work with him. Highly recommend these positions to any who might be interested!

Eiko Fried@eikofried.bsky.social

In addition to a hiring PhD in ~October & hopefully some PhDs and postdocs ~February, if anyone would like to work with me as part of eg a Marie-Curie or something similar, please do get in touch. Topics include depression, classification, measurement, systems, time-series, & theory building.

I had a great time giving my first conference talks, sharing my work on depression assessment and digital phenotyping at #APS26BCN! Grateful to my mentor (@depressionlab.bsky.social), my collaborators (Drs. Fried, Allen, Craske, Sachdeva, and many others), and everyone I met and learned from there.

We just got approved to hire a teaching professor in Quantitative Methods! This is the *very* rare tenure track teaching position at Berkeley. I'll be chairing the search committee. Official job ad coming later this summer!

NHS data should be driving innovation & improvement – it’s an amazing resource We just published the sequel to our 2021 "Road to Hell" paper on using NHS data for research... things are worse! Buckle up for a long 🧵about *how COMPLETELY mad* system is for accessing NHS data for research 1/20

Selecting an effect size for power analysis is hard. Many researchers fall back on Cohen's thresholds, but they have no empirical basis and vary wildly by field. Our new paper offers a better option: field-specific effect size distributions built from meta-analytic data doi.org/10.3758/s134...

Hey friends, my new paper was just published in JAMA Psychiatry. I draw on biological species classification to sketch a new framework for psychiatric nosology. Brief summary follows below. Full text link: jamanetwork.com/journals/jam... 🧪 #PsychSciSky #MentalHealth

Cuts to scientific research will have effects for years to come. @standupforscience.bsky.social has been an important voice connecting scientists & all of us. @cdelawalla.bsky.social leads that group, & her latest post is a call to action to restore funding 👇🏿👇🏼👇🏾👇🏻👇🏽 substack.com/home/post/p-...

Great perspective piece on open-ended questions in ESM data by @bringmannlaura.bsky.social and colleagues that came out of this year's #MITNB meeting!

Communications Psychology@commspsychol.nature.com

Perspective: Open-ended responses can improve ESM data by grounding it in real-world experiences and phenomena as they are experienced in everyday life. Handbooks and guidelines on ESM should include sections on collecting and analyzing open-ended text items. www.nature.com/articles/s44...

For instance: @claireecusack.bsky.social just submitted a paper today in which we show that discrete emotion states predict discrete avoidance behavior in SAD with *very* high accuracy. We know this, right? But now we can locate the phenomenon in *specific moments of time* à la JITAI concepts.

I will say until I'm blue in the face: clustering as a magical ontological tool is dumb and bad. Clustering as a discretization tool that sacrifices dimensional granularity for temporal specificity is fantastic.

If our theories have to do with people's daily experience then we really need to know how well we're measuring daily experience. So we need more of what Kevin's team is doing here! Just because your item has the right words in it doesn't mean you know what it measures, or how well.

I kept reading EMA studies claiming to test etiological theories of AUD, but I realized they never actually measured how people experience AUD in their daily lives. So we set out to see what we could learn with existing data. 1/19 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...
