RIP, Walter. May those nuclear wessels bear you to a better place.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

new pet peeve unlocked: If you cannot read cursive, perhaps you should not be attempting to transcribe the census information between 1850 and 1940. FFS, there are some terrible errors. Learn what the hell those letters were shaped like.

I've never heard of this, but of course I don't support that. If you do use that knowingly, stop or you're compliant in identity theft, as far as I'm concerned. Stop ruining people's jobs for your 5 seconds of humor shit.

BEGGING my fellow streamers to PLEASE stop using Tangia! I don't care if it makes for funny clips. Most voices on Tangia come from people who've very publicly said they don't want their voice taken from them this way. AI voices hurt ALL voice actors. You're better than this. Use other TTS.

ok, I'll play this one. My 1st five ttrpgs in the order I played them: 1. D&D 2nd edition ("AD&D", high school) 2. Call of Cthulhu (high school) 3. Car Wars (1 game, high school) 4. Vampire the Masquerade (20s/30s) 5. Daggerheart (this year) (not including D&D 5e, it's like returning)

Just as a note: I will never ever publish anything I have written in any format using AI, nor will I ever use AI at any point in my writing process or any other artistic endeavor. If you find anything of mine that has AI, it's either stolen or they're lying. Just like AI does. FUCK AI

thanks so much to Beam Team 3d! They delivered yet again on great headset costume attachments. These cuties mean I can be my Firbolg character since my D&D session is on the 30th. The other players will love this! Great service!

What could be more Halloween than a BAT? How about a bat colored like a JACK-O-LANTERN? Let's meet the Painted Bat (Kerivoula picta), also called the butterfly bat, native to SE Asia. 🦇🎃 (📷: MerlinTuttle.org)

eBay users! Don't ignore today's email, even though it looks like a boring standard update to the User Privacy Notice. They want to use your data to train AI models. If you click the link over the words "the right to object", it takes you to a page with a toggle button letting you opt out.

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

Well, I guess you can't trust whitepages anymore to look up a number accurately. I just tried to look up a # and it mapped them to a landline in Kansas. Um... no. That's a Colorado area code, idiot. Literally every other website said Denver County. Disappointing. Spoofed at best, maybe.

Over and over, people try to put down socializing or organizing or teaching or anything online (usually while being online). There’s a distinct whiff of ableism to it, as well as this Boomer-esque expectation that everyone likes or needs the same things.

Probably not a popular opinion, but I really feel like people who freak out about the social vs solo study and the so-called "death of hosting" are basically admitting that they conflate social consumption/vampirism with friendship. Screens vs Social is also the most Boomer framing I've ever seen.

A calm, intelligent, informed, comprehensive reply to a troll. Just perfect and so mature and professional, unlike so many in power right now.

As a Muslim who has been accused of dual loyalty and asked to denounce everything from ISIS to the Iranian state, I breathed a sigh of relief that I think I’d been holding in for like two decades watching this.

Is the weird trend for video shorts to have that "focus on the face while everything else moves weird" due to some AI filter? It's really annoying AF to watch. Almost nauseating, if there's a lot of movement.

ok... why are my regular-length videos on youtube now showing the comments on the right and other vids on bottom? things switched, I didn't touch anything, and cant find any setting to fix it. I hate it.

Guidelines for ethical Gen AI usage is like guidelines for how the Paris museum art thieves can use the stolen art. It’s still stolen to begin with, doesn’t matter how they use it afterwards, and doesn’t change the fact they are thieves. You’re just condoning it now.

Looks like I found an author's association I will now never join. there is NO ethical use of AI in art of any kind. I do not support the use of the hallucinating, environment-destroying, plagiaristic THEFT MACHINE.

I try really hard to temper this impulse, given costuming isn’t typically meant to be a perfectly realistic reproduction. But. There was no princess seaming prior to the late 1800s. In fact it’s called that because of a specific princess.

one thing I had in WA state I wish they had here: a newspaper-like booklet mailed to EVERYONE before elections that had every candidate's statement, question answers, and who supports/endorses them. It's a PITA to find information here on all these judges I've literally never heard of.
