Maturing as a software engineer doesn’t mean writing fewer Horrors, it means knowing when to write A Horror and how to construct the proper containment zone around it

I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries

Have to give a presentation Wednesday. And I finally cracked how I’m gonna do it. After sweating the thing for a whole week.

I'm 99% sure it was this. I also remember a Drive-In with my Dad and Step-mom that had a double feature of Star Wars and Grease.

First film you saw at the cinema. The real first one, not the pretend one you tell people! Mine: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Wigan. We were near the front and I can still remember how massive the AT-ATs looked, looming over us out of the snow :) Film, year, where, and whatever stuck with you.

Home. And we didn’t tell the house/dog sitter how to flip the thermostat to heat… so it’s 60 in here. I like it a lot.

Drove to Michigan. Test drove a car. Had a bite to eat and a cider. Lovely chill bday. Tomorrow we’ll tourist around and enjoy the brisk weather.

The final box in the Advent of Doug 2026. Day 24. 4-Day Weekends. I took tomorrow and Monday off of work, to enjoy my birthday, and our anniversary. My goal for 2027 and beyond is at least 1 4-day weekend per month. PS: Tomorrow I turn 54 years old. That's weird, man. bsky.app/profile/digd...

Advent of Doug: Day 1 of 24 I figure I should do this! DougDays really began yesterday. I'm gonna share a goofy little gift I've received, given or just something to share leading up to the magic of October 16th. bsky.app/profile/digd...

(ignore this, it is purely for my own special spectrum maintenance) I switched midstream to quote-posting. So this link takes you to the end and you can click up through. Since the threading of the initial one got weird in ways that made me itchy. bsky.app/profile/digd...

Day 23 (one to go!) Tilting at Windmills. Long ago I used a chance encounter with a windmill in a game to start calling myself Quixotic. I was familiar with the story, but it was being a goofball online that lead me to become fixated. And an easy gift to ask for, “draw me a windmill”

This made me cackle. I hope this sells a bajillion copies.

Day 22. Old stuff. I enjoy things that make me feel small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

Day 21 of DougDays (was yesterday, so I'm doing 2 today). When you discover the partner of someone you respect is fully awesome in their own regard. Then, you realize that they know they won the lottery too. (PS: Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan are the ones that prompted this) bsky.app/profile/digd...

Day 20 Taskmaster. This show regularly makes me laugh, always makes me smile. The joy of this show makes paying for YouTube premium feel “right” The New Zealand and Australia versions are enjoyable too.

Capitalism. In particular concentration of 'news dissemination' falling into fewer hands, all driven by data and ad sales. An informed public was an accident of education and competition amongst 'news' organizations. Under-girded with incentives for accuracy. It lasted a few generations.

I truly do wish I fully understood how we--meaning the medical/scientific community--allowed the messaging that the vaccine caused the exact complications actually caused by the DISEASE to take root so completely.

Day 19. Graphic novelizations of books. I mean, I love fully original ones too, but graphic novel versions of amazing books feel like really cool covers of songs you love.

Not making the advent of Doug list is being awakened at 430am by a dog that needs out, and a total inability to get back to sleep. -shake fist- guess I’ll just listen to some music and read a bit. The horrah.

Day 17 Words that encapsulate feelings and meanings in magical ways. They're not "untranslatable", they're just really good words, yo' Palimpsest, Saudade, Quixotic, Zwischenraum, Callipygian

Day 16 As Gen-Xers, We were told we'd become more conservative as we aged. Like nearly everything Boomers tried to teach, that was wrong. I have gotten softer as I've aged, and, as always, Vonnegut has a line for it: (image stolen from "a little book of humanism")

I sure hope my coworkers that keep presenting these clearly AI generated lists of goals, requirements and dependencies know that my gentle ribbing of the obvious mistakes is actually me noting who to never, ever fucking trust.

Day 15, DougDays, Advent of Doug, EgoPosting, what have you.. I was going to post some trite Mark Twain travel quote, but you know what convinced me that even if I *haven't* traveled enough it's worth considering Bourdain's shows. I'm putting it on my list of things to rewatch right now.

Day 14 In 2018 there was a Kickstarter for this movie Frank Oz and his wife made. original muppet performers talking. One backer benefits was a 1000 person private group. One of the others in the group was an assistant to Mr. Spinney. He got me the book.. and feather. Yeah, I teared up. Still do
