The correct legal approach to this seems to be that when platforms start favouring some content over other, they don‘t deserve immunity for third party content on the basis that they are just platforms. They should become liable. finance.yahoo.com/media-advert...

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

I’ve had a bit of contemplation on this whole thing: Fact: when obviously toxic mortgage debt nearly brought down the western banking system - nobody was really prosecuted at the top. In fact, they got rewarded. Fact: when slavery was abolished, slave owners were compensated.

If you build a contraption that hurts your neighbour, you are liable. But if you build an AI software that allows attackers to down a good part of western government services along with university services etc., you become a billionaire and are not liable for anything? Surely that cannot be right.

The compulsion for AI to “gain value” will force it ever more into every digital aspect. You will be forced to both consume & be consumed by AI under the veil of social & economic progress. The morality hanky will be forgotten. You will be forced to fear being left behind.

So if the AI bubble bursts, which based upon how this sort of thing normally goes, we will end up with a very different online world yet again consolidated into a few peoples hands. Some things will materially improve; but the social cost gets left on the table for someone else to pay for.

If the AI bubble doesn’t burst & this continues for say, another two years then we will probably go insane as a species. Psychologically AI is already probably doing untold harm to significant numbers of people - and it’s not even got really going.

I look at what is achievable & I consider the myopia of America is simply not cut out for being in charge of AI on behalf of humanity. In fact, not entirely sure the market is. At all. This advancement requires different economics & social dynamic.

The American tech firms are not responsible entities. It is beyond their ego scope to consider consequences other than a fun exercise in the board room to blog about. And candidly you can’t just kill these guys; more will come along. It’s a sort of species thing now.

AI is a phenomenal tool. It is a modern spinning Jenny. A modern electric street light. The desktop PC to the typewriter. But also it’s nuclear power. It has waste byproduct that needs considering. A morality has to enter the chat.

I don’t believe for a minute AI will create some utopia. The odds of a dystopia certainly seem higher. I believe the internet as we know it is done for. Simply isn’t sustainable against a backdrop of spiralling hardware & energy cost. Something I suspect people are overlooking

In both cases, morality gave way to economics & wealth. We see it throughout history, big & small. Why are financial crimes consider less serious than violent crimes when it’s persistently proven their impacts go much wider?

So here we are, on a day when a big bank declares AI saved them 5k jobs. That’s just economics right? So when AI accidentally targeted a kids school in Iran? That’s just war right? Morality is a convenient social hanky. It gives way to any other motivation we have.

It’s not outside the realms of reason to now see Elon Musk as a state actor. Not just the head of some weird company. As such, he is effectively more dangerous now to most nations than, for example, various currently designated terrorist organisations.

University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

*May contain violence and scenes of a sexual nature. Aye that’s why I’m watching it, now get yer kit aff and start swinging some punches, ya mad bastards!

If you were here for rich persons circus, you’ll recognise the clown act warming up. After this comes the “everyone needs to feel the pinch” & the government bailouts & the lack of consequences for anyone but the consumers.
