Today marks five years that I have lived in Chicago. What that means, thanks to the vagaries of American immigration law, is that it is almost time to go home to London, where I will be covering Europe. It's been a time. I have learned a lot. I figured I'd write a bunch of it down:

Well I suppose you can’t claim that sponsoring one journalism awards category affects the judges in the category before it.

This isn't hyperbole or a joke. Parents actually called the cops and got the black boy and his family removed and the league claimed they were trespassing because he was "putting on a show" and wasn't playing "fair."

They called the cops on this 3-year-old Black boy because he was kickin the white kids' ass on the soccer field.

In August, the Trump administration flew 12 Somali immigrants to an ICE facility at Guantanamo Bay. “Nobody tell us that we’re going to Guantanamo Bay,” Sakariye Abdi Mohamed told journalist Amanda Moore in a phone call from the detention facility. “Just like kidnapping.”

Does *nobody* actually think more than a step ahead any more? When people on the right started calling their political opponents "NPCs" that was actually revealing. Because in any video game if you treat a human opponents like an NPC you generally get crushed

Schooley@schooley.bsky.social

That this is in THE WASHINGTON POST is almost too much irony to bear.

A huge number of powerful people last year saw Trump take office and apparently did not stop to think that he might prove unpopular and lose power and that their genuflection, however helpful in the short run, would come back to haunt them

I am just begging people writing about AI to think *one step ahead* and try to anticipate the actions of other humans. Three out of five of these AI agent "killer tasks" only work because *your* AI agent isn't yet up against *everyone else's AI agent*. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/t...

nytimes.comPut Your A.I. Agents to Work with These 5 Killer TasksWhen you start using Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s dots for these tasks — like applying for jobs and booking hard-to-get restaurant tables — you may never go back.

A thing I am thinking of setting an AI agent up to do is to automatically download, transcribe and summarise podcasts for me, because I loathe listening to stuff. I do realise though that if everyone else did that, soon nobody would make those podcasts.

I know almost nothing about Brazilian politics so, take this with a pinch of salt. But the default position of so many elites about so many elections is that the hard-right usually wins, because when you get to the heart of it they best represent the unwashed mob. This is in fact not true

On politics I know rather better, it was striking last year the conventional wisdom was that Republicans would not suffer that much at the midterms and Nigel Farage would be the next British prime minister. Now, those things could still happen but...

Quite want to go without a TV when we get back to London but if we do buy one, think I might buy a nice computer monitor instead

I fear this stuff sells, if not to the marginal voter but to the Republican base who might not otherwise bother to turn out. The last time I was in Michigan I was peppered with questions by a couple about why "you let Britain be taken over by Muslims". When I objected they asked if I was a Muslim

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

It seems impossible for our political system to hold the politicians tied to the actual invasion of our Capitol to account, but any random Muslim candidate is reflexively labeled a terrorist.

I should also add this couple were generally kind, telling me helpful things about their own community. Just wildly misinformed. Most Republicans I meet outside of Trump rallies (which attract a lot of genuine nuts) seem like decent people with just a very different information environment to me

The husband actually seemed convinced and understanding, if surprised, when I pushed back. His wife however told me I was wrong about my own country, which had never visited, because she had seen it on Fox News

Never been to a Cheesecake factory. Or a Denny's or an Applebees or an Olive Garden or a Red Lobster or a Cracker Barrel or a BJ's or a Texas Roadhouse or... literally any of these chains you seem to only get next to highways or Times Square

Fixed-rate tolls, like on the Illinois Tollway, would not fix congestion on the Kennedy or other expressways in Chicago's urban core. Dynamically priced expressways--or just express lanes--that use price to match traffic demand to available roadway supply to deliver reliable 50 mph+ speeds would.

The 2000s (including first-term Obama) saw the identification and removal of a lot of people who did have involvement with the CJ system but wouldn’t have been identified as removable immigrants until then. It was lower-hanging fruit both politically and logistically.

If it is right, fascinating that the Obama administration succeeded in doing that without $70bn to fund a masked up force grabbing people off the street or prisons holding people for months on end? Am I right?

Everyone in Chicago knows about the parking meter deal and how disastrously bad it was for the city. Nobody discusses the sale of the Skyway at the same time, which turned out to be a pretty great move financially, because tolls are so effective at deterring drivers they don't make a lot of money

A more hilarious example is the case of the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels in London. The new Silvertown tunnel opened last year to relieve traffic on the Blackwall tunnel. Both were tolled to pay for it. There is now less traffic on both than there was just on the Blackwall before

Like, it is true that not everyone on the Kennedy can take Metra, or the Blue Line, or bike. The clear evidence is that a toll literally as low as $5-10 would clear out a lot of the people who do have those options. Things would then speed up for everyone else.

It is also the case that the revenue from speed cameras tends to drop pretty quickly as people work out this simple trick and stop speeding. Which keeps catching out Chicago because they keep budgeting for cash that doesn't come in, because their cameras actually work really well

Jake Gotta@jakegotta.bsky.social

People who think speed or red light cameras are a “money grab” or some effort to raise revenues believe that speeding is just, like, an unavoidable necessity? It’s not! If you simply drive the speed limit (or less) you won’t get tickets! If everybody did that, the city revenue would be zero!

This week I did something with AI that would truly annoy me if I were another shopper. I told Muse to add new items on The RealReal to my cart, putting them on hold for 20 mins. I told Muse to do it again and again as soon as the hold was up. This went on for hours, blocking anyone else from buying.

ICE causes man to wreck while his children are in the car, then tries to pry his kids from his arms. They got the wrong guy. Toward the end of the video, an ICE officer says law requires the person recording to back up 25 feet and threatens with pepper spray. (There is no 25-foot law.)

Set aside the morality, this shows an extraordinary inability by the Ramaswamy campaign to think even one step ahead. Ah ad that tests well on focus groups who do not know the appalling backstory... is obviously going to backfire when that backstory is broadcast everywhere

So many people in politics seem completely unable to anticipate their opponents' reactions to their moves. It's like watching eight year olds playing chess

Another really good example of this was Elon Musk trying to buy the Wisconsin judicial election last year. He probably did actually raise the Republican vote! But he raised the Democratic vote more, and apparently did not anticipate that at all

A question I have not been able to answer - the $3,000 (or $2,600) supposedly available from the federal government for self-deporting. Who actually qualifies? My status expires December 11th. If I overstay a day can I uh, get it? (I am obviously not going to try) DHS have no response
