Fun thread about history and archaeology. Several layers of mirrors and metaphors for life in 2026.

Some of the most remarkable lost artefacts from the ancient world were the titanic wrecks of the Nemi ships, built for a Roman emperor. In their first-century heyday they held gardens, palaces and baths in a floating wonderland. But barely a decade after their recovery, they were lost forever.

So I watched about 90% of the Brewers season on TV, but in the postseason, I have been superstitiously listening on the radio instead. With a 10-0 lead in game 3, I feel like it's safe to turn on the TV. (100% will turn off the TV at the first sign of adversity for my team.)

This is not the response in Wisconsin, unless you are trying to vote and don’t have valid ID on you. If you get there and aren’t registered, try to re-register. If your qualifications are challenged, there is a process. But also call the WisDems hotline, 608-336-3232, or message me.

A fire broke out at the retreat built for Adolf Hitler in the Bavarian Alps known as the Eagle’s Nest, and work to extinguish it was still in progress, police said. A person was detained in connection with the blaze.

Partially true. Yes corn syrup, but it's mixed with the ground up skin people dump out of their pedi-eggs.

Candy corn might be gross but since it’s actually made out of corn (syrup) it is also the most authentic of the Halloween candies.

My grandma went to a lot of Brewers-Yankee games at County Stadium because she thought Reggie Jackson was the most beautiful man in the world. My grandpa went with her because he hated the fuckin Yankees.

You know what's fun about #Brewers fan base? There're a LOT of Brewers fans who inherited their fandom from their moms. In the 80s, especially, women and girls across Wisconsin were wild about the Brewers. There was ABSOLUTELY an undercurrent of horniness involved, but they became true ball knowers.

In The Big Lebowski, the ashes they dumped out of the coffee can were the actual cremated remains of Steve Buscemi.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

Superb all around. Just a delight. Claymation is so fun and the workmanship here is outstanding. Helena Bonham Carter's voice acting here might be her best ever performance.

Inserting yourself into the daily discourse and then threatening to block anyone who disagrees with you is some real "my mom says I'm the smartest kid in my school" energy.

My hometown team is going to the World Series for the first time since I was 11 months old. I've been a big fan for as long as I can remember, so this is nice. My baseball fandom has been flashing before my eyes this evening. So many great memories. Sports can be a beautiful expression of humanity.

Watched 90% of their games on TV this season but, due to superstitions, I've been sticking to the radio during the playoffs. And baseball is the perfect sport for radio. Long drives on summer evenings. Backyard cookouts on hot weekend days. And now, sitting in my basement on a rainy October night.

Palaeontologist Nellie Pease sketched this artist's rendering of the Diprotodon. They may have reached weights of 3 tons, 50% heavier than an adult rhino making them the largest marsupial known. Their closest living relatives are wombats and koalas.
