The result of a recent vote on a Kansas ballot measure will make it harder for conservatives to dislodge supreme court justices they dislike, including two new appointments from the Democratic governor.

Don't sleep on this August ballot measure in Kansas that would transform -- and deeply politicize -- judicial selection in the state. The Kansas Supreme Court has been a bulwark for many important rights so this is a very concerning development. statecourtreport.org/our-work/ana...

In the brief they filed today, these former leaders of NY's judiciary argue that by keeping out the confusion, danger, and resource demands that courthouse immigration arrests inevitably create, POCA ensures that the state's court system can function and serve everyone it is supposed to serve.

NY passed POCA in 2020 after a dramatic increase in federal immigration arrests in state courts. These arrests created chaos in the courthouses and made people afraid to come to court. Public defenders, prosecutors, judges, domestic violence survivors, and more, asked the legislature to pass POCA.

The Trump Admin has prioritized courthouse arrests in other states, leading to hallway chases, injured bystanders, arrests that look like kidnappings, and a general fear of accessing courts. POCA has insulated New York's courts from the worst of this, that's why the Admin is challenging the law.

There'll be no supreme court elections in Mississippi this year. A federal court had ordered new, fairer maps for the state's court, and was preparing to order special elections this fall under the new map. Then came SCOTUS and Callais. Important new reporting:

We looked into the “business courts” that are sweeping the nation. We found that nearly half the judges are former corporate lawyers, even though many of these courts hear cases involving workers and consumers. In some states, it’s 100%. newrepublic.com/article/2102...

newrepublic.comThe Stealthy Rise of the Business CourtStates are rushing to establish new judicial venues to resolve business disputes. But the way they’re being built suggests they’ll be very cozy with corporate power.

Virginia is one of only two states in which the legislature appoints (and reappoints) state supreme court justices. That system leads to scenarios like what Virginia will see this January, when a justice in today's majority will go before the General Assembly to keep his seat on the court.

This is pretty shocking. Citizens United unleashed the floodgates to more big money in our elections. Shelby County and last week's Callais left the Voting Rights Act in tatters. Rucho turbocharged artisan gerrymandering to silence voters. Trump v. United States expanded presidential immunity.
