🛢️Energy supply crises matter because their economic impacts extend beyond energy markets. This Comment argues that energy security should be understood by how energy systems transmit price shocks to the wider economy.

Climate risks rarely happen in isolation. Heatwaves, droughts & floods can overlap or follow one another, creating compound risks.
A new perspective led by IIASA's @kornhuber.bsky.social explores how science can better support real-world decisions.

Tellus has a long, storied history. I submitted my first paper there 30 years ago for that reason.
I'm excited about Tellus's rebirth and plan to submit my next paper on the Arctic Ocean carbon cycle there. In the age of money-grubbing publishers, I encourage you to consider Tellus.
Welcome to the official Bluesky account of Tellus! We publish selective, high-quality Earth system science spanning atmosphere, ocean, land, cryosphere and biosphere.
Follow for new research, perspectives and journal updates. 🌍📖

On The Climate Brink: The Atmosphere Just Set a Water Vapor Record.
Aug. 2026 probably had more water vapor in the atmosphere than any month in the last few thousand years, if not a 100,000 years.

We provide principles to navigate the pressing needs for more granular climate risk information in times of increasingly complex extreme weather events.

We're already starting to see another pronounced hot weather signal emerge for 2nd week July, with the potential for v. hot conditions to return.
You might think "surely we couldn't have another high-end heatwave so soon?" but the trouble is, extreme weather can load the dice...
In light of the extreme early season heat we've been having, we must ask ourselves the question, how much worse could it get?
It was a pleasure to discuss our recent work and how to prepare for more extreme heat with @nytimes.com

44.8C Andujar SPAIN Today
Insane heat day and night:
2 consecutive MINIMUMS >30C in Almeria (never happened b4 !).
42C in Northern Spain in several communities and many monthly records including
41.3C at Pamplona (tie).
France has smashed HUNDREDS of records

Extreme heatwaves happenning successively after another one in the same summer is exactly the type of worst case risk we find in our work:
www.wur.nl/en/news/risk...
More likely than not, we're going to be talking about central-western Europe, mainly France, having experienced two high-end heatwaves before July & with one of those having been in May.
Climate change has* increased the probability of* this extreme scenario (not caused it).

In our new highlighted paper in Earth System Dynamics, we map out the global atmospheric river network along with its main hubs, highways and basins!
What emerges is a surprisingly structured system that we think could open up new perspectives on atmospheric connectivity💨🌧️

Climate change: how fires and floods are creating uninsurable areas across Europe
As #climaterisk increases, "the question is no longer whether or not the public sector will need to play a larger role, but how quickly it can be redesigned to do so"...

Can’t say I recall ever seeing this before. More than half of France’s 30+ year-old weather stations set/tied their monthly high-temperature record in May 2026. Some did so as many as 9 times. Unprecedented to witness this level of heat so early in the year.
Peak El Niño median forecast is now forecast ONI at +3.3°C (RONI +2.7°C) up .2°C from last month so far.
If it verifies, it will be by far the strongest El Niño on record.
Thanks @hausfath for the great visual.
EU deploys record wildfire response for 2026: 777 firefighters and 27 aircraft across Europe. After 2025 burned over 1 million ha, the largest in EU records, prevention and resilience matter as much as response: ec.europa.eu/commission/p...#Wildfires#ForestFires#ClimateResilience
El Mediterráneo alcanza los 5 a 6 °C de anomalía positiva según el ECMWF
Nunca antes a final de mayo el mar Balear había estado tan caliente.

Still bit early for detailed forecast. But: models pointing to a classic High-Shear-Low-Cape environment on Thu. Moderately unstable air from Biscay, strong shear, both deep layer and low level, including helicity and low LCLs. Wouldn't be surprised by a few #tornados in Benelux and Germany!
Hard to believe I’m even writing this.
Meteorological summer hasn’t even begun, yet Paris, France has already logged more days above 32°C than its annual average.
In response to recent misinformation about the use of scenarios in IPCC reports: the IPCC does not conduct its own research, run models or make measurements. The IPCC’s role is to assess the available scientific, peer-reviewed literature relevant to climate change: www.ipcc.ch/2026/05/20/i...
Looks like the UK heatwave will be killed by thunderstorms. Emerging research, from our group and others, suggests the threshold for triggering convection (i.e., thunderstorms) may increase in a warming climate, potentially enabling very hot days to warm more rapidly.

Exceptional temperatures require exceptional atmospheric circulation.
The intensity of the 500-hPa ridge ("heat dome") driving the present heatwave in western Europe is distinctly outside the monthly climatology for May.
If you're a reviewer or an editor for a scientific journal, I urge you to not hop on the "RCP8.5 is dead" train.
There are now editors that reject RCP8.5 but are ok with 1pctCO2. 🤯 Both are what-if scenarios, useful to science.
Don't let politics influence what we can research and publish!
