I hate how much people of all stripes are letting their bigotry out these days. Can we not hate people for their views? Must we poke at their religion (see the rise in antisemitism on the left or Islamophobia on the right) or physical attributes (ugly, disabled, annoying voice, etc, etc)? Be better.

Dear Bluesky, should I be worried that there are a ton of cop cars in my condo complex parking and they appear to be going door to door? I'm sure it's nothing. Maybe just looking for some baked goods.

And when people cry about moving on, we just say: They killed Americans. They knocked down the White House. They got filthy rich on the stock market. They killed people around the world indiscriminately. They broke the law, over and over. THEY KILLED AMERICANS.

Layoffs at work today, I survived but seriously tech is feeling dire. Moving to the woods and living an offline life looks better and better except for the part about enjoying modern amenities.

Until today I'd been expecting a raise was on the way. I mean my expenses certainly haven't gone down and my review this month was great. But now? I guess I'm happy to still have an income! 😭 Some of my favorite coworkers are gone now. Seriously the only person I just casually talked to, poof.

The thing about RFK Jr is that he’s not just a eugenicist who peddles extreme and dangerous anti-science, anti-vaccine conspiracy theories that cause suffering, pain, and death, but he’s also a vile racist piece of s**t

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

A serial rapist was elected twice as President, a fact we don't reckon with nearly enough. Now one of two major political parties has been molded in his image, run for and by violent sexual abusers who hate women.

Had truly mediocre Thai food in nyc despite the good reviews so obviously I had to get actually decent Thai food now that I'm back in WA. They may have more overall variety there but sorry our Thai, Vietnamese, and Korean food is so much better. Also immigrants rock.

Why am I not surprised that Bolsonaro is refusing to concede and saying he'll demand the results be nullified. May I suggest, dear Brazilians, that you shove him in jail with his father. You can already see what happens when a country is stupid enough to not jail someone attempting a coup.

I may not live there but I just breathed a sigh of relief. Please let the next big country election go on the right direction too and then the US midterms.

This thread comes to a close... ... as we now have a final result. Let the records show that, with 92% of the vote countywide, Lula is up 3.3%. (Can he end up doubling his 2022 margin?)

Serbia and Brasil now, Israel next week, the US week after next. Come on world we can turn things around even if only in tiny baby step ways.

Reading an unedited ARC today and being reminded that I should probably get back to copy editing because I'm incapable of not doing so. At least that way I won't be editing a book for funsies like I am now. Okay I probably will. At least this is a book I actively want to read.

Because it was ProWritingAid's "donation" that kicked off the whole NaNo "no, no no, the plagiarism machine is GOOD actually, and if you don't let it steal your work you're ABLEIST" thing, so far as I recall.

Diana reposted

So, wait, has NaNoWriMo rebranded as "Novel November", paid for by ProWritingAid, which used to be a spell/grammar checker but now is (you guessed it) an "'AI' grammar checker"--in short, yet another way for a griftslop machine to grab human-written text? Do I have that right?

I'm hearing talks about increases of 25-30% in health insurance next year. Our rates have basically doubled in three years because the GOP took a wrecking ball to insurance. Never let them claim they're the party of small business again.

Left PDX on Sun and the moment the TSA agents saw I was taking off a wrist brace and bringing ice packs they rushed to help me with my bags. EWR today? I got told no liquids in reaction to ice packs, had to lift someone else's bag to scan mine and was patted down. I know which airport I like more.

Pretty sure I was "randomly" chosen for a pat down because I made a stink about how ice packs are 100% allowed for medical reasons even in a carry on (why would you check ice packs?!) and they needed to scan them not make me trash $50 worth of fancy ice.

Again, the scandalous thing about Elon Musk spending $276 million on the 2026 midterms is NOT how *much* money it is. The scandal is how *little* money this is *to him.* Compared to his net worth, this is roughly equal to the median American my age spending $40.

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

I'm very glad I didn't decide to just go thrifting and vintage shopping in NYC for clothes rather than packing a suitcase like I considered. 5 well reviewed supposedly curated stores full of overpriced fast fashion crap. And 1 stunning Victorian dress not for sale til Nov. That was it.

Well I guess if I have to end up with a 90 minute flight delay at least it's the red eye flight where I'll have 8 hours to kill til hotel check in. Might as well kill some of that time hanging around PDX.

and don't get me wrong, FUCK YEAH TO THOSE KIDS. but everyone who was worried about military police at the polls needs to be *losing their fucking minds* over the fact that they shut down polling places at HBCUs and if you're not, what are you even doing

Trump on El-Sayed: "His name is actually Abduladadalalalala. It's Adulbabababababa Mohammed Al-Sayed. So his middle name is Mohammed. So I was right. He's a jihadist."

Had a long busy somewhat stressful day at work so I'm ending my day just watching clips of Jon Ossoff ripping into his opponent over and over. It's delightfully savage.

My husband isn't on bluesky and I just asked him if he was involved in Oddessey but he doesn't even know what it is. So I guess this is true.

Decided it would be smart to get my flu and covid vaccines today. I'm traveling next week so it's a little late already but something is better than nothing. Course now I'm remembering just how absolute crap they make me feel and that tomorrow is a work day. Oops.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

It's already illegal. Congress banned it near-unanimously in 2022. That law allows the ban to be lifted only if Russia withdraws from Ukraine. He's simply breaking the law that's already on the books.

Republican US Rep Brian Fitzgerald tweets that he will introduce a bill to block purchases of Russian oil. Don Bacon (R-Neb) tweets that he will co-sponsor. Obviously this won’t happen during campaigning recess (and Trump could veto anyway) but interesting push-back on Trump.

Apparently it's overkill to make muffins, chocolate chip cookie bars, and cinnamon rolls in a single day. But I have new counters I want to knead dough on (rolls), blueberries that need consuming (muffins), and I just feel like chocolate chip cookies. So really, I have no choice here.

It's not hard. Both Yglesias moderates and Khanna leftists give MAGA politicians legitimacy because they want MAGA's base. Ossoff simply does not give a shit about the MAGA base, which allows him to speak with fierce clarity about MAGA politicians. He is willing to bet on an anti-MAGA majority.

Bill McKibben@billmckibben.bsky.social

Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register

This exactly this. It's why you shouldn't even so much as share the name of a mass murderer. They want to go out in a flame of glory with everyone knowing their name.

Beyond matters of taste and decency and whether or not you even believe in the death penalty due to moral reasons, livestreaming the execution of Nidal Hasan is a dumb idea because you're giving him his moment of public martyrdom.

Oh goody it's like Oscar/Emmy season when people pitch themselves for famous prizes cause the ceremony is coming up. Oh, you mean typically that's not an award you campaign for? Huh. The prize is announced this week, so maybe "it" will happen then.

Trump: "There's never been anybody in the history of the Nobel Prize that deserves it more. I settled eight wars. I stopped the total obliteration of the world."

Got a flyer in the mail today for a free dinner for two at Red lobster. I just have to sit thru a sales seminar. On what you probably aren't asking. Why on timeshares.... specifically how to get out of your contract. I guess the people selling the damn things needed a new job.

I love that the US government seems to care more about a single plague death in Russia than measles deaths in the US. Did someone die of pneumatic plague or "with" pneumatic plague? Huh?

Oh goody. Have food poisoning and just got an unexpected $1000 electrician bill because to make the HOA insurance co happy everyone must have a fully up to code panel. Mine is 2 years old which apparently is outdated. FML. Today sucks and I'm going back to sleep.

People all around the world have short memories. It's how a Marcos is in power in the Philippines and a Duterte is vice president. And how the US has Trump. Again. And how if we don't make some extreme societal changes in the next decade we'll probably end up with DJT Jr as pres.
