After all the drama abt this “new ad” Cenk Uyghur’s group was dropping in Michigan and how it was tied to Netanyahu starting Iran War … he just grabbed & tried to get more mileage from an ad he made for his failed 2024 prez run when he was blaming egg prices on Israel. See the date of the tweet.

The vile attacks on Amy Acton need to be seen in the context of a party that *needs* people to believe women fabricating sexual assaults is common as rainwater. Because it’s pretty much the only way to evade the conclusion that the president is a rapist.

If folks in the Democratic party cannot find it within themselves to be absolute staunch supporters of trans people's rights because trans people are people who have inherent worth, then they should at least do it because if we give up on trans people, then we're literally giving up on democracy.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

We are at the break glass moment on the Democratic Party and its treatment of transgender people, and it is my opinion that if we don’t act now and loudly demand to be heard, we will suffer the consequences of their shift.

Reupping this thread because I'm not sure who convinced a bunch of Democrats that the way out of authoritarianism is to concede on EQUAL RIGHTS, but I can *promise* that it won't work. It never has.

So, yes, they’re reeking of desperation and throwing everything they have against the wall, but remember: that’s how they always behave. They are constantly doing all they can to work the refs and game the system, every minute of every day. So don’t let it get you too confident.

@danahoule.bsky.social et al make good points about the fuzzy term “consultant class”, but I also think of a line in one of Disraeli’s novels: “he would be defied to define the term gentleman, and would fail should he attempt. But he would know what he meant, and so too would they who defied him.”

But I’d note that Grumbach and Bonica are academics, not journalists, and the terminological inexactitude of “consultant class” could helpfully be addressed by some journalists doing some reporting.

Also, the reforms they propose would make it easier to identify and stigmatize bad actors, which would make it easier for good consultants to do their work without being tarred with this brush.

It’s quite true that there are lots of professional political consultants who spend half their years sleeping on people’s couches in random states as they go from campaign to campaign trying to do some good and put together some income. Their work is honorable, unsung, and vital.

Conflicts of interest abound. This extraction is draining the Democratic base rather than investing in the party’s long term health, biasing candidate positions in favor of factions with big money, and weakening the party’s stance against corruption. Tough to beat authoritarianism in this situation

Historian here 500 free black Haitians fought in the French contingent with the Continental Army during the siege of Savannah in 1779 against the British.

What we said would happen is happening. Republicans ending TPS for Haitians has led to incredible job loss, harming businesses and the local economy in communities like Springfield, Ohio. Scapegoating hardworking immigrants hurts all of us.

if democrats practiced politics as well as republicans do we would have spent the last 40 years warning the american public about the dangers of reaganing the economy, aka creating the recession that ended up electing clinton in 1992. instead democrats are still addicted to deficit talk bs.

Dave Kamper@dskamper.bsky.social

One of the things I liked best about @btarrington.bsky.social’s book on the 1880 election is how clearly it shows the Republicans were absolutely united on message in calling the Democrats the party of treasonous slavers, even 15 years after the war. Important lessons there.

There is something of a fetish on the labor left in this country around small grassroots unions that supposedly lead to greater democracy, but these small organizations simply don’t have the resources to fight multinational corporations.

Trump's opponents cannot simply wave away that existence; this does not mean he is more popular than he appears to be, but it does mean that he has support that is genuine, committed, and non-artificial, and there is no easy answer to that problem other than denying them power through politics

The tell, to be clear, is that the warrant was served by Homeland Security, aka Trump’s Gestapo, rather than the FBI. If it was the FBI it’d be easier to understand some of the hedging by Dems. It’d still be cowardly, but you could understand it.

So this is people who reported themselves as Trump voters right after the 2024 election, which is good practice. I wonder what share of Trump voters, if asked now, would still say they voted for him.

Best part of @daphnarenan.bsky.social and @nikobowie.bsky.social’s book is how it reminds us that there is no permanent solution. In a democracy, there will always be political, and we do ourselves great harm if we think there’s some way to get everything back to some kind of stable normalcy.

Dave Kamper@dskamper.bsky.social

Just finished @nikobowie.bsky.social and @daphnarenan.bsky.social’s new book, Supremacy, and I cannot recommend it enough. Clear, compelling, and accessible, it makes a powerful case for democratic constitutionalism. Outstanding stuff.

You still lots of folks, center-left and left alike, who act as though we just need one key reform, one important change, and things will settle down. That’s not how the world works. Building a living democracy is a constant project.
