AI Companies to professional cooks: We've brought you food. We think it's delicious, but it might be spoiled or poisonous. Check it out for yourselves.

This is absolutely disgraceful.

"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt." Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn? MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

“The city release of documents confirmed a police drone flew through the windshield of a Peterbilt tractor-trailer truck in June, cutting the face of a Canadian driver and sending him to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Temple.” This is a key reason why I’m opposed to these drone 911 programs.

In Kharkiv one of the bodies is literally torn apart by Russian missile after an attack. Body parts are scattered across the street. "Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine" - Trump. Bastards. Sick terrorist Bastards.

Anthropic is trying to write its own federal AI regulation law. The major AI firms have all issued feeble proposals for how their AI will serve the public, in anticipation of their pending IPOs. It's all a reminder that we cannot, any under circumstances, let AI firms govern the future.

In Sloviansk a russian airstrike destroyed a private home. Emergency responders pulled the body of the killed owner from under the rubble‼️ The woman was simply living her life in her own house and russian "humanitarians" killed her for that.

Druzhkivka used to be home to over 50 thousand people. They built their lives here, built homes, had dreams. Now, it is in ruins, another town in Donbas destroyed by Russia.

So, like, if the reviewer can't figure this shit out on their own they *shouldn't be reviewing the manuscript at all*.

Academic publishing and genAI? I’d rather roll in shit.

I wore stickers on my clothes, on the bus, to do a silent campaign. The city I'm in is very pro-Bolsonaro. My role was to show other sensible people: we exist.

I saw a really cool sticker today for Lula. I don’t feel like it’s my place to comment on any other country’s politics at the fuck all, so I like to stay silent. But I do adore this.

this why I believe abstinence is the only real way, but I know it's hard we have been here before with smoking, where the best thing is never to start & the second best is to stop as soon as you can — and it doesn't matter if one cig a day is "not that bad" if you can go down to one go down to nil

olivia.scienceWe've been here before!Parallels between AI and tobacco, and other warnings.

that's what's so worrying! even so-called critical use still elicits the same feelings that draw you back to any use

Also for what it is worth, it DIDN'T actually label them as illustrative — and the deception was only apparent because I know the data well. That's scary, because if you use AI for everything, you wouldn't know the data well enough to catch its deceptions.

Kramatorsk today. Empty streets, closed stores, burnt apartments. It is slowly turning into a ghost town, just one more among so many destroyed by russia.

While we discuss with colleagues in academia about the ethics of using AI, trying to choose the right tone in order to avoid shattering what little remains of their spine with statements a bit too strongly worded, this is what they’re actually contributing to in the real world.

Have you ever looked at a tormented city and wondered how much devastation it takes to kill it? How much more can it endure? Where is the line after which survivors, if any remain, can no longer rebuild? We watch russia raze our cities one by one.

There are some less clear cases (software security, formal proofs). But some are pretty obvious: using AI to make slides, making unnecessary images, generating useless videos.

So much this

One thing that pisses me off to no end about AI bros in academia is when they cherry pick their favourite problem, where AI may or may not actually work, while proceeding to ignore the global net negative effect of AI usage on the rest of the world. (Full ivory tower, but pretending it’s not.)
