In the last year, No More Robots has funded + is currently funding a dozen games, and has paid numerous devs to make prototypes happen for free But obviously, getting press is absolutely impossible for us, because only doom and gloom gets clicks

Painful review of the Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle on Steam that really highlights how destructive the continue system was to people's perception of arcade games. The beat 'em ups mentioned play wildly different from one another if you're actually trying to survive on 1 credit.

Games are made by people and game studios are made of people but game studios are also made of institutional knowledge, continuity, practices, standards, technology, resources, and IP. And those things do mean something, and it is a loss when they're discarded.

this also applies wholesale to the indie game industry btw

a cool thing about indie animation is that it's expected to save the entire industry, every show has to look better than the things the fans grew up on or it's a waste of time, there's no union to be found anywhere, no budget for any of it, and asking the audience to pay anything to watch is illegal

But hey, if you push through and beat the odds and become a one-in-a-million success story, you too might one day have a throng of fans tweeting at you to kill yourself

it's simple: everyone on earth should make at least one game in bitsy, twine, puzzlescript, zzt, rpgmaker 2k/3, and pico-8. all of them have robust tooling, smart creative constraints, browser exports, and lively communities.

Cannot speak enough good things about Diggin' in the Carts. Talking about VGM and its historical context and contemporaries within its era is much more common now, but this is easily one of the best presented - especially of its time

This was a fun hearing from Yoko Shimomura, and if you're into this clip, you should definitely check out Red Bull Academy's "Diggin' in the Carts" which is filled with a lot of fun anecdotes like this. It's still all up for free to view. Highly recommended watch if you like games music.

i see it as a natural evolution of tone in environments where we have to convey a lot more subtlety and cues than conversational/casual written english was really meant for

today, lowercase can be clickbait, or a strategy of gen z-ers to read as less intense. it can also be a status symbol, or a way to signal human authorship. finally, pockets of the internet still see lowercase as somehow antiestablishment.

I never forgot this but 9/11 happened when I was like… 22? And I had all these naive ad violent images in my head. And I had one friend, slightly older guy, he was just not about that, and I asked him “you don’t want see anyone dead for this?” And he goes “no man, hate hurts the character.”

breaks my heart when people respond to zine scams with long threads of "advice" boiling down to 1) don't make zines and 2) if you do, professionalize. genuinely think my advice would be the complete opposite. go smaller, go shittier, go more diy, and all of that will keep it manageable.

YouTube hasn't paid out music streaming earnings to Distrokid for almost two months with no communication, so my income has been cut in half just for fun. It's a startling reminder that the entire streaming ecosystem could just go away overnight because a tech company lets it. Buy albums if you can.
