Here's a WHOLE THREAD by Chanda mentioning other books & leaving out her own masterpieces! I heard a few words from her when I did that with my own book 😂. First, if you haven't bought The Edge of Space Time, you obviously should remedy that immediately. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/746817...

I heard Grok is a harmful tool that has been used to create deepfakes, explicit and pornographic, non-consensual pictures of women and children. I have never tried it myself. Do I need to create a Grok account and make pedophilic images before I have an opinion on whether it is useful or not?

So no, I won't "just try it" and no, I won't stop using whatever platform I have to share my scholarship, raise the real issues and lift up the voices of others doing the same. /fin

Moreover, if we use something, it does not always follow that we then understand it, or what we were doing with it (nor indeed what it might have been doing to us).

Reading about something, or hearing an argument about it, may arguably be as valid a form of educational experience as picking up a thing and using it.

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

He claims he is an utter fool but also paints himself as highly intelligent, as an expert on AI and the future of humanity. He believes he should stay in control of a foundation worth billions of dollars in charge of many programmes aimed at women and girls in the global south.

He says he was completly fooled by Epstein. He says his own affairs with women had nothing to do with Epstein's rape and sex trafficing ring and that they never discussed these matters any of the times they met for dinner.

I've seen the future and it's bleak. Coming to an inbox near you soon too I imagine. I don't use LLMs for anything I do and never will but it's depressing that I wrote something that no one ever read before it was rejected. 🧪 #academicsky

My book Radical Infrastructure came out last week! It goes deep into the political and economic roots of technological infrastructure to explain hype around various technical projects, and counters it with cases of people pushing back. Download OA: www.ucpress.edu/books/radica...

Can we fly all them Irish flags at half mast for a while? Because if you only support half the people in Ireland then you're only half Irish. Manosphere in the GAA? Níl. #SpéirGhorm

Teachers, books, and humans are unecessary. Universities are a scam. The professors are the enemy. Let machines do your thinking while they tell you are finally thinking for yourself.

@brennacgray.bsky.social A great read thanks for sharing 😥 Universities at their worst instrumenalise academics, become breeding grounds for narcisism. Something useful i took from this piece is how it deconstructs "the university" by saying: Which univeristy do you mean? Which professoriate?

ICE just arrested a 5-year-old on his way to a soccer game in Austin. His name is Liam, just like the little boy from Minnesota. He should be in kindergarten this week. Instead he's in a trailer prison in the desert. Release Liam. Release these kids. Close the Dilley children’s prison.
