Works as a Board Game Designer (Whirling Witchcraft, Hungry Monkey, The Glorious Guilds of Buttonville, and Where is That?) and an Applied Nuclear Physicist.
I’m going to Spiel in a few days! I’m excited to show four new games to publishers with origins around the world.
If you see me there, don’t hesitate to stop me and say hi!
It is spooky season, and what better way to celebrate then with a special AEG Halloween sale! From now until October 31st, when you buy Whirling Witchcraft on our webstore, you'll get the expansion for free!

Hi! I’m Scott and I run Minerva Tabletop Games. I’m a board game designer, publisher and organiser for Playfest and Playtest UK.
I design and publish small-box/microgames, especially those with solo play. My background is art and design and I enjoy integrating highly stylised artwork into my games.
Working on a new series about what makes for good game experiences. I'll be looking at genres, components, whatever, but I want to start with rulebooks.
What to you makes a good rulebook. What makes for a bad one?
Co-design!
Do you think game designers should be more similar in their approaches OR more different/complementary in order to successfully co-design?

Italian board game creator Paolo Mori has picked up his second designer of the year prize in the space of five months thanks to Lucca Comics & Games – one of Europe’s biggest comics and tabletop gaming festivals:

Huge congrats @mropla.bsky.social !
Today, it’s a battle of the designers!
We’ll be playing both Where is That? and Flip 7. Both games are nominated for the Swedish Family Game of the Year award, Årets Spel, so naturally we had to get together and play each other’s games!
genuinely a cheat code for talking to people is just asking them questions about their interests or whatever they're doing in their life. they will just talk and talk and talk
Oh wow! I LOVE this visualization of splines. I want to make board games using these!
If you are here, Freya Holmér, I am so impressed by you presentation skills on display in this video.

I design board games. As a side hustle, I am an associate professor in applied nuclear physics. ;)
One of my research areas is the verification of disarmament of nuclear weapons.
And here I am, pondering if there is a game in the planned verification schedule of disarmament. Where some players are nations who want to disarm and others are trying to SAY that they want to disarm.
It’s a quite serious topic. Can such a game exist and still be enjoyable to play?

I’m preparing for sending mails to publishers before Spiel in hopes of getting to pitch to them.
I will explain how I do it, and then I hope you chip in and tell me how you do it! 🧵🪡
Fourthly, this is the worst part, I wait.
Once I get a reply, I book meetings with 15-30 minutes in between at Spiel. Sometimes it can be REALLY crowded and hard to get from one hall to another.

Thirdly, write a mail to them and explain:
1. Who I am and what games I have gotten published so far.
2. A brief description about each game I want to pitch to them and why I think it is a fit (similarities in weights or themes to other games of them).
3. Send sell sheets and videos (one per game.

First of all, I have games that I think are good and that I like. I know their weights and that each play through of it is quite stable. (No crucial hiccups.)
played whirling witchcraft yesterday and it's still so fun. 'barely managed chaos' + chill art and vibes. totally deserves a new home. we need more witchy games!!
I’m preparing for Spiel!
I’ll bring 4,5 games for pitching:
1. UtopAI
2. Hexes & Homecoming
3. Fenrir Rush
4. Einstein’s Garden
(5.) I will look for a new home to Whirling Witchcraft
I’ll give some short briefs below and don’t hesitate to ask questions if you have any!

It's #CraftWednesday! Do you have a game-related crafting project in progress? It could be a prototype, print and play, upgrading the components of a favourite game, making an accessory or even something larger like a table or games room. Share a picture and join in! Please RP!
It’s kinda wild that people think that just because I’ve published a lot of games I must be raking in it
In reality, aside from advances, it takes years of work before a designer gets any money
In 6 years of active pitching and designing, I should be receiving my first royalty check this week 😊
Tonight is the last night to send in pitches to Fastaval. @fastaval.bsky.social is a Danish con. But it’s mostly a community.
In 2019, I had dabbled in game design for quite some years. Played with friends in Sweden. We had fun!
🎲✂️
And that is not enough. They all shared their thoughts on how to pitch at spiel.
And they all cheered for me as I got the game signed with @alderaceg.bsky.social.
This community has meant the world to me. And this publisher has taken care of me since the start.
I’m grateful. ❤️

I brought a few copies and the game was played over and over again.
I was amazed!
And all the people that included me in their community were simply fantastic. I was a small part of a bigger movement. A movement of encouragement and experience sharing.
When I finally won the best game award (announced to the Darth Vader theme, I guess I was a swede that stole the trophy!), I was amazed!
The cheering. The pure joy of my competitors.

By accident, I stumbled upon the idea of what became Whirling Witchcraft.
And in some way, I got to hear about Fastaval. At the moment I cannot recall how I learned of it.
But I submitted my little engine building intermezzo. It was nothing like what i had designed before.
And it was accepted for the competition. I celebrated and got quite obsessed to make the game as good as possible.
I probably played the game 100 times. Maybe 200.
And as Easter approached I was ready.
If you are a publisher and you can't get a hold of Erik during Spiel, we will happily rant up to 40 minutes why you should publish a new version of Whirling Witchcraft.
Or we can just play a game of it and you'll be convinced that way. 🧙

Einstein’s Garden is an abstract puzzle game based on the Einstein tile. It is in realtime, but play testers keep telling me it doesn’t FEEL like realtime.
The contract of Whirling Witchcraft at AEG is running out. I’m looking for a new home for it.
No hard feelings between us. I look forward to pitching more games to them in a near future.

Hexes & Homecomings (co-design with Daniel Olai) is a highschool monster drama. It is simultaneous deck-builder where each round is about building the highest scoring hand.
In Fenrir Rush (co-design with Magnus Karlsson), you are running away from Fenrir, the Norse mythology wolf, to try to save yourself. Your run by puzzling Tetris like shapes on the map to try to get as far away as possible.

In UtopAI (co-design with Daniel Olai), you are AIs programmed to save humanity and improve your computational power. You do this by programming your algorithm to build an efficient human restoration machine. But beware of corruption…
My son loves thematic games with some weight to them. Some games he has liked are ROOT and ARCS, Undaunted, and Unconscious Mind.
Which ones should I check out before Spiel?
