I'll be presenting one of my latest works at EMNLP 2026: Man Made Language Models? Evaluating LLMs' Perpetuation of Masculine Generics Bias. See you at the poster session on Oct. 26 from 4:45pm to 6:15pm in Hall H! Preprint: hal.science/hal-05831314v1

In this paper, we evaluate the spontaneous use of masculine generics (i.e., the use of the masculine gender as a default, similarly to "generic he" in English) and gender-fair language by 6 different LLMs in responses to generic instructions in French.

Through two different experiments, we find that LLMs largely use masculine generics and are unlikely to use gender-fair language, which contributes to reinforcing bias already highlighted by psycholinguistic studies.

In our course and book _Calling Bullshit_, we posit that If something seems too good, or too bad, to be true, it probably is. Now as a college professor I'm pretty confident that overreliance can AI can harm our thinking ability, but just ten minutes of use? Let's dig into this this study a bit.

It's been strange to see leftists rally around copyright, when I came of political age during the piracy era when it was obvious copyright was foremost a tool of corporate profit and not communal benefit. Copyright is a necessary evil under capitalism. All human culture is everyone's birthright.

I'm searching for short-term housing for a research visit in Utrecht, Netherlands from Jan 18 to March 12. If anyone knows about anything (or even just has advice to share), please send a message!

It still seems incredibly unbelievable how this kind of situation may exist. Publishing a paper is a lifetime thing; even if its content is not to be presented at a conference, it will always be associated with its authors and brought up in various situations: talks with other researchers,

way as if they had to present their work during a live session. Because surely, if one presents a paper at a conference (poster or oral), one must have a deep understanding of the content to be able to explain things in detail and answers questions from participants.

I guess now one can ask Claude or another LLMs to take care of the slides and the presentation script, but LLMs cannot replace one-to-one conversations (in real life! Even online is getting complicated now).

job interviews, and so on. How can one publish something under one's own name without having an understanding of the content? Seems totally crazy to me. I'm wondering if this kind of behavior might not be more rampant for journal submissions because the authors are not "held accountable" the same

(1) Artists are justified in being angry about AI and we really shouldn’t use AI art where otherwise we would have hired an artist. Art isn’t really about productivity growth and automating it helps no one. (2) Programming is different; we are bottlenecked on software and need more of it urgently

NGL, watching Bluesky bully a software developer for using AI makes a part of me question whether some of the worst people that I don’t agree with on much of anything are right about this place.

Alright everyone, message received. I was not expecting this response, I honestly had no idea before I made the post Like I said, the code is experimental. A proof of concept showing that PDN-on-WINE is possible. It's not finished. I can literally just delete it. It won't be part of the next build.

LOL, if you removed everyone with ADHD or on the autism spectrum from academia, I'm not sure you'd have one full university of faculty left. But also being an academic isn't like being a professional athlete - this isn't a contest. If you can do the work (w/ or w/o aids), you can do the work. 🤷‍♂️

This article is hilarious. First, panic over a reseller buying used books for destructive scanning by AI companies because they must be rare books, but turns out none are particularly rare, booksellers are happy to get rid of them, and the reseller has nothing to do with AI cos or digitization

The free version of ChatGPT automatically searches the web. The prompt "What are the most relevant sources for the claim that LLMs hallucinate?" returns the following. All those link buttons in the output are live hyperlinks that were found, not generated. If this isn't a search engine, what is it?

Laura K. Nelson@lauraknelson.bsky.social

I'm once again begging everyone to update their priors. "ChatGPT is not a search engine." Yes, yes it is. It actively searches the web based on your prompt, and returns active links relevant to your search/prompt. It's a search engine. It is. (Obvs don't use it that way if that's not your thing)

We are caught in such a trap. Asking good-faith community members to volunteer more when we can plainly see so much bad-faith behavior without consequences... IDK where it ends. Probably not central source of the problem, but NO ONE should be listed as an "author" on 20, let alone 40, submissions.

The protestations here are ridiculous. Even in co-authored scientific pieces spanning multiple fields, every author should have read and understood every cited article. You should not put your name to something that you don't understand.

Dr. Holly Walters@manigarm.bsky.social

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?

I am very tired of the stupid-savvy 'oh you think politicians were honest before Donald Trump' take, like yes there has in fact been a qualitative change in the way modern american politics have been conducted that is largely attributable to him, and is bad.

This is a complete fabrication. The linked study does not find this nor does it purport to find this nor does it even attempt to find anything like this nor does it involve collecting or analyzing any data whatsoever about children in households that used voice commands.

Working hypothesis: If you're doing research and don't occasionally have a small existential crisis, either you've been blessed to work in an exceptional field (do tell which one it is!), or maybe you're being a bit naive.

Georg Henning@georghenning.bsky.social

Questioning my field more and more based on the methods we use and getting into a mini-existential crisis (glad I never took this stuff too seriously anyhow). Blaming @dingdingpeng.the100.ci because of her blogs and our chats. Look what you have done.

Almost 7 years after Prates et al./Stanovsky et al.'s papers, have we not learned anything? (ChatGPT Translate translating "nurse" as "female nurse" into French, with no gender bias notice or any alternative suggestion)

Thanks for the discussions here, this is illuminating in a rapidly evolving space. Are you able to clarify what this means? E.g. an unpublished position paper is unlikely to make it through moderation guidelines for somewhere like CS.AI/LG; but if it's accepted, it might?
