NGL, watching Bluesky bully a software developer for using AI makes a part of me question whether some of the worst people that I don’t agree with on much of anything are right about this place.

Alright everyone, message received. I was not expecting this response, I honestly had no idea before I made the post Like I said, the code is experimental. A proof of concept showing that PDN-on-WINE is possible. It's not finished. I can literally just delete it. It won't be part of the next build.

I know I'm just a rando but I'm still very sorry it happened to you. I really thought the platform was built towards curiosity and transparency. I guess we can't have nice things. In a positive note, congrats and thks for the great work!

Hugs mate. You owe them nothing and can do whatever *you* want with the thing you have spent countless hours on that you give away for *free*.

block them all there are plenty others here that want to hear thoughts and opinions and tools usage I have immensely enjoyed paint . net from the first release and have always been thankful for your hard work

I kinda get that. But also it’s fun to get notifications about getting blocked by people who hate ai but still use a website that’s hosted in a datacenter.

I'm really sorry people treated you like shit. I may have been critical of the recent update, but way too many just went way over the line into straight up bullying and harassment

Hope you will. If you can muster a couple of you getting blocked/muted (it's a practice a lot of the pile on'ers are doing, posting something stupid, then blocking - experienced a couple of times now) or you blocking/muting them. Perhaps setting some interaction-restrictions. It wont fix

Block early, and it gets better fast. There is a nice community of AI knowers here, and once the purity brigade blocks itself or gets blocked, you can talk shop as much as you want. I’d like to hear about your progress.

understandable, really. some of the things the critics were saying to you were just appalling. I hope that your Linux port works out, LLM or not I can't even imagine what would go into porting a monster of a Windows assembly like that. thank you for putting in all the effort you have to open source.

huge bummer :( suggest you have another go at it when community spaces are a thing on this website.

Community-spaces on Bluesky will solve this. AI isn’t a subject matter fit for the town square. It can be discussed publicly, but the audience has to be a self-selected, softly bounded public of technologists with shared context.

aren’t necessarily heavy social users, or who try to come back after a break, etc. (software devs and CS/AI/ML/LLM researchers are the two groups i’ve seen dealing with this the post)

Well, yes, because they'll put you on it for any criticism of AI. Do be careful using blocklists run by people you don't k ow, because you are outsourcing "who you are allo d to see" to a random person you've never met, and there is a history of people adding their own beefs to blocklists.

It's such dogshit, im sorry. The moral panic on any ai use at all is untenable, and the entitlement from people who claim to like what you do is disgusting.

they’re right about some parts of this place, and that’s a bummer, but there are dozens - dozens - of us who think that building things is cool and I hope people don’t stop posting about it here

As devs, we’re in an industry where it’s actually helpful, as in, it can enhance our abilities. But, we also are doing the thing closest to its core foundation. It’s a very different experience for everyone else, and their raw feelings can be seen on Bsky as it’s an avatar for what’s gone wrong

When that hatred got aimed against the major improvements made in identifying cancer cells in mammograms i kinda gave up entirely on there being any rational discourse on here on this overall field

AI is shit at making art but it is actually a GREAT tool for creating proof of concept software. People on this site don’t understand nuance and will jump on any opportunity to criticize any use case of AI because they’re incapable of thinking beyond AI = bad.

bluesky (or mastodon) users understand the difference between AI assisted programming and vibe coding challenge (impossible) or for that matter, have a nuanced take on something.

this kind of dog piling behavior on this platform is exactly the kind of stuff that results in screenshots being posted elsewhere making fun of bluesky and stunting its growth

Zero AI is not happening. It’s not possible. If we don’t shift our energy to responsible AI, then we’ll get irresponsible AI and it will be partly our fault. Don’t shoot the messenger, this is just the reality.

I didn’t mean to say that it’s impossible to do things without GenAI. I meant that a blanket zero AI policy for *everything* is impossible. Writing programs professionally without GenAI puts you at a competitive disadvantage so large that it means deciding to change careers.

Think really hard if you want all the software in the world to be written by the people who would never come to Bluesky. Because the bullying on here could only achieve that at most. It can only make everything worse.

I don't think, that this is a "Bluesky only" problem. Whenever the audience grows over a threshhold, there will be idiots. Sad but true, as Metallica said.
