I work as a Lead Game Designer in Malta, and keep a myriad of unfinished somehow-still-alive side projects.
Right now I'm focused on Stellar Settlers, a dice rolling strategy game we just produced!

🙌 I'm Enrique, Spanish living in Malta.
I've been a videogame designer for 1.5 decades.
I battle Unreal Engine during the day, and at night I try to finish my first boardgame project with my wife: Stellar Settlers.
It's a sci-fi themed dice rolling game of strategy and luck.
Nice to meet you!
AI proponents cling to the idea that the tech is going to enable boundless creativity, but I've seen what it enables; endless spam. It's enabled people without a single ounce of creativity in their bodies to make endless Balatro clones, genuinely no thoughts of their except Balatro but slop.

Making mods for Neverwinter Nights is how I started too!
Bioware games' have been extremely influential in my career. Along with ID, they pretty much shaped how I think about game systems, narrative and tools and paved the way for me to become the a game designer.
Another sad day in this industry.
One of my earliest serious attempts to make games was making mods for Neverwinter Nights. If you know me, you wouldn't be surprised that I developed a series of non-violent games: volleyball and hide-and-seek are two I remember. (Volleyball involved punching a Will-o-Wisp).
Planescape:Torment was
"I'm BLACKPILLED on POLITICS" makes it sound like a position of cynical disenchantment, a philosophical stance that rejects any possibility of a functional state.
No, wrong. You're fucking dumb. You're a dumb guy who made a dumb choice and now you're too embarrassed to admit it.
I've been progressing in the backlog with these #wip#SpaceMarines Intercessors.
I'm quite happy with result vs speed. I'd say I'm around 6 hours in. Probably need another 3-4h to complete them. That'd be around 2 and a half hours per model.

Don't let billionaires convince you slop is the future. They're used to managing & directing, not making things themselves. Of course they can't see the difference. They don't understand your love for the craft. Keep making personal, beautiful games.
You've got my support 💖
Future? No Thanks! is not 100% AI-free.
I wrote a full disclosure here plus a couple of notes about gen-AI and coding:

Unexpectedly I found the legendary @johnromero.bsky.social in the Malta Comic Con today and luckily got the chance to chat a little bit about games and the industry :)
Well... I consider Apothecary Ralicia Tabitha done (bar transfers). At least she can wear a helmet to hide her horrible face in public, though that doesn't fix the rest of the problems... I want to think it's all due to a bad white priming.

One thing that still surprises me about game development?
How iteration is so wildly effective at turning garbage into gold.
"This sucks" -> Fix things that suck -> "Doesn't suck?! Whoa!"
I mean, if your AI is going to kill us all, at the very least you should spend your last days on earth in jail for the crimes committed by your tech...
if your agents are going to commit crimes, you are legally responsible
if you cannot figure out how to prevent your agents from doing crimes, you’re going to have to choose between releasing them and protecting yourself from criminal liability
imo this would do more for “ai safety” than a sex cult
The thing is that, in general, people that aren't interested in game design (past an idea that can be summarized in a sentence) aren't good game designers.
Good design requires a lot of iteration and testing. And that usually kills a lot of the surprises and fun you'd otherwise have playing it.
maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me

For the same reason I don't think AI will ever be great at game design because it can't play and iterate over what it produces from a human perspective.
So highly personalized games made on a whim are doomed to be garbage.
Authored games can be garbage too, but they can also be great!
I played another game of solo #KillTeam a couple nights ago. Escape mission. I didn't manage to escape with enough operatives, so I'll have to repeat the mission.
I still find the rules a little fiddly, and the games take me a bit too long, but I'm having fun! I'm looking forward to trying again.
Oh god... She is judging me...
I think I'm ready to finish this piece and move on to something less terrible.
#nerdlings#miniaturepainting#warhammer40k#spacemarines
Slowly getting there... It's a pretty hard (and fun) miniature to paint and I still can't believe how bad it looks up close in the pictures, but I don't see it in real life so... 🤷
#miniaturepainting#nerdlings#warhammer40k#paintingwarhammer
From a distance it is not looking too bad, but I've been making some terrible mistakes with this one starting with a super spotty primer... I'm hoping it'll get a bit together as I finish more details...

Advice: Never put all eggs in one basket.
Me: Ok. How about I put some on my desk, some in the fridge, some on the floor, some I smashed when I sat over them on the sofa, some I left in a drawer in my parents home, and there are many I don't even remember where I've put them...

I didn't manage to finish but I got around to playing some solo #killteam on Friday night. I'm still super slow, having to consult the rules every five seconds, so I only managed to do 2 turning points before I had to tidy up... But I'm enjoying the challenge!

I finally got the paints out after a few months of inactivity, and finished a couple scratchbuilt terrain pieces I've been working on (for a long time now).
Rust, rust everywhere!

28 años haciendo juegos (los últimos 20 ganándonos la vida con ellos). El plan es seguir al menos unos 20 o 25 años más y así jubilarnos haciendo lo que nos gusta :-)
This month, our little indie game studio, DevilishGames, turns 28! We still have the same passion and excitement for making games as we did on day one. Stay tuned, we’ve got announcements and giveaways coming this month!

I think we're at the point where we can incredibly comfortably say that your attitude towards Reform, Restore, MAGA, the AfD etc is how you'd have responded to fascism in the 1930s
Hey little kids.
Today we are presenting Bye Bye Bonnie.
A co-op journey up to 4 players where you control a skull like a golf ball using the buttons inside of it.

We are achieving superhuman artificial intelligence!
Only it is not by making the machine more intelligent, but by making humans more stupid.
This exactly got me to unfollow polygon in this platform... I couldn't stand their headlines, most of the time useless nostalgia or rage bait... Much better now without that noise.
Well... here there are some mandatory eclipse pictures (courtesy of my wife who has a phone that doesn't suck).
Never seen anything like it.
It was really impressive to watch, I'm really glad we could travel to Spain in time!

"75" is probably an exaggerated number for effect, but yeah I agree with the comments.
Seeing variants to choose from (AI generated or not) is a waste of time. Ideally you don't want to see any variants. You ask someone you trust to do something and they do it and you know it's good as is.
I have, with my own eyes, watched my tax dollars in the form of missiles as they hit buildings inhabited by civilians.
I'd much prefer subsidizing a grocery story I don't use.
It isn't yet the end of the week, but who doesn't want some more good vibes around the place? Do me a little favour!
Quote this post with something you've painted that you're proud of, or you just really like. Doesn't have to be your best, just something that makes you smile when you see it!
This was, is, and always will be a brilliantly shit illustration of how stupidly self defeating business people can be. Forgoing the universal positive of a staff self-training on their own time, because of the vague fear that one in a hundred might make some money.
NEW: I spoke with multiple video game developers and a U.S. employment lawyer to learn more about restrictive side clauses that often prevent employees at major companies from pursuing hobbyist work or personal projects.
In an industry renowned for creativity, why are we stifling it?
If a team makes a game that gets great reviews and doesn't sell, that's a biz failing but the silver lining is you caught lighting in a bottle -- protect that team! It's worth its weight in gold. If you jettison the team but keep the biz people, I don't know what to tell you
Been writing some ideas about how to navigate the relentless need to self promote the thing you made. It’s a thing I’ve been doing for 26 years, it’s not new or some terrible fresh hell. You just gotta. So here’s a simple thing you could try. Or don’t. I’m not the cops. Do what you want. 🧵
