What happens to memories over time? And what does sleep have to do with it? 🧠 💤 Excited for a lively (perhaps controversial!) discussion at MDRS with @eitans.bsky.social, Gina Poe & @agilboa.bsky.social! I'll share my perspective on why memories (and their neural ensembles) keep changing. Join us!

A nice real-world look at the sleep–mood relationship: across 1,712 nights with home EEG, Pierson-Bartel et al. found later sleep onset predicted lower positive affect the next day. Sleep timing may matter for mood independently of how well we sleep. buff.ly/iryU8Qc

How long after learning can sleep still reshape a memory? A pre-print from Moyano et al. suggests that targeted memory reactivation during NREM sleep reduced forgetting even when the memories had been learned 24 hours earlier. Exciting news for building learning over time! doi.org/10.64898/202...

This is the most fucked up and immediately harmful policy decision I think I've ever seen in adult trans healthcare in the UK, and that's saying something. The Welsh Gender Service is one of the best in the country. It is widely praised by the patients it helps. That is why it is being targeted.
🚨🆕 @wearequeeraf.com and @whatthetrans.com can reveal that the NHS has cancelled all gender-affirming surgeries for adult patients of the Welsh Gender Service Some trans patients received the news just days or even hours before they were due to take place 👇 www.wearequeeraf.com/nhs-cancels-...

Finally, this has gone a bit under the radar, so I want to highlight it: The social, behavioral and economic sciences directorate (SBE) has simply ceased to deliver grants to many of its subareas. Any topic not specifically OK'd by the Trump administration is receiving zero new awards.

Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up. In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grants—a 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.

Excited to have Taylor's work with me and Daphna Shohamy out in Open Mind now: even at the end of an event, it's not too late to prioritize it for long-term memory!
Sometimes we know an experience is important in the moment. Other times, its importance only becomes clear after the fact. Do these two cases have different consequences for memory? In our new paper we found that both kinds of prioritization impact memory in different ways! doi.org/10.1162/OPMI...

In yet another preprint, Tiange (Summer) Lu collaborated with @alexatompary.bsky.social to examine whether sleep promotes generalization in a large online cohort (N=137). Not only did she not find a benefit of sleep, but some evidence also suggested that wakefulness promotes generalization. 3/12

Schaeffer et al. recently used temporal interference stimulation during NREM sleep to increase slow-wave activity—& the effect continued after stimulation ended. Across nights, larger increases were linked to reports of more restorative sleep. Very exciting potential! www.nature.com/articles/s43...
