What can I read to understand this 21st c. economy where companies that produce little or nothing run for years registering massive apparent losses, while still making millions (billions) for their creators?

#FreeSpeech News Hollywood Reporter reporting that YouTube, TikTok and Meta platforms are refusing to take even paid ads for Alex Gibney's documentary which takes a, let's say, sceptical and questioning view of Elon Musk's career, personality and alleged achievements. "Musk" opens on 9 October.

hollywoodreporter.comThe Major Social Media Platforms Are All Rejecting Paid Ads for Alex Gibney’s ‘Musk’ (Exclusive)YouTube, TikTok and Meta have all turned down the trailer for the Oct. 9 doc, citing “political” content. X won't even take Bleecker Street's calls. The distributor is appealing.

I want the Prime Minister to look into a TV camera and say the RNLI are heroes, that we do not change policy by street violence in this country, and that he expects any criminal action to face the full force of the law. That's it. That's all he has to do.

"I already boycott The New York Times/don't have a subscription, what can I do?" A lot! You can: * Share our call for boycott. Tell others about the NYT's role in trans genocide * Stop sharing NYT links, even to dunk on them * Pressure the pension/retirement funds invested in the NYT to divest

Trans News Network@transnews.network

"If trans people want a boycott of The New York Times, where's the call to do so?" Here is a declaration laying out how the NYT is a key driver of trans genocide, why boycotts work and why anyone who gives a damn about trans lives and rights must boycott The New York Times.

Context: this speech is from SIR THOMAS MORE, a history written, as near as scholars can tell, in the early 1600s by 6 or 7 people including Dekker, Heywood, Chettle, Shakespeare, and Munday. It was never performed, because Jacobean England was a police state and it was banned by the censor.

Omg. WTF is Happening?@lalahaenzy.bsky.social

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again. #Pinks #ProudBlue

The thing to look for when looking at war elephant artwork are the 'ankusa' - distinctive elephant hooks which mahouts carry to control the elephant. Often those guys and their hooks are simply...left out. Anyway, I wrote a bit about war elephants here: acoup.blog/2019/07/26/c...

Palaeographic suggestions? This boxed letter is found in a late-12th c Aristotelian MS. Did someone see a similar use? I have an idea about its meaning, but I cannot remember anything of the kind (MS Avranches, BM, 221, f. 13r)

It's Michaelmas, so it's also the anniversary of the battle of Auray (1364), which marked the beginning of the end of the Breton War of Succession begun 23 years earlier. And you know what? Let's mark it with a 🚨BOOK GIVEAWAY🚨 this time! (Charles de Blois has never had a stranger memorial...)

oh that reminds me, is @royalsociety.org still gonna twiddle their thumbs while their Fellow, Elon Musk, is championing the alt-right in the UK? At what point do we all just have to assume that the Royal Society is happy to be associated with white supremacists and fascists?

Nationalism— the idea that there is a natural unity among an ethnoracial people speaking a single language— is young but thoroughly taken for granted today. It is tied directly to the idea that the national unity creates an inherent right to a bounded territory claimed by the state. It must go.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick@reichlinmelnick.bsky.social

Also, even the idea of a single national identity for most European countries is relatively new, despite the claim of these "ancient nations." As of 1794, only 11% of people in France spoke French as a first language, and nearly half didn't speak French or spoke it poorly.
