There's no ACIP in the US right now -- and there won't be for the foreseeable future because RFK Jr isn't reconstituting the group. That is already having consequences for new vaccines, which don't have ACIP recommendations. My latest: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

I point this out every year, and am often told that "surely this cannot be true!" But surveys consistently report similar numbers, and it illustrates why increasing public & private institutional visibility of individual *scientists* (not just "science in the abstract") is actually quite important.
Every year, Research!America does a poll that asks, "Can you name a living scientist?" In January 2026, 76% of respondents said "no." Of those who said "yes," 5% named a scientist who was, in fact, dead. www.researchamerica.org/blog/can-you...

Another farmer-centric NYT Iowa story. The overemphasis on the role of ag in the state economy is a constant. But also no mention of the immigration crackdown’s impacts on IA Latinx communities (where many work in CAFOs & slaughterhouses). The 2-3% of Iowans who are farmers sure get a lot of press.

it's not the only problem in the world but it seems very clear to me that better ADHD support leads to better real-world outcomes, and that the delta between outcomes for the well-supported and unsupported is frequently enormous
Systematic review relevant to the discourse on diagnoses and meds. "ADHD was associated with increased all-cause mortality, suicide mortality, unintentional or intentional injury mortality, and natural-cause mortality, whereas ADHD medication use was associated with reduced all-cause mortality."

Late to this Bloomberg piece on Marc Andreessen. This is one of the key things. Andreessen is *angry* about how he has been treated, when any objective observer might note he has benefited enormously from the institutions he now purports to detest. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

This has gotta be brutal in places like Maine and New Hampshire. They don’t need this data. They notice the near doubling in price of their heating oil just like we notice $5 gas www.nytimes.com/live/2026/10...
Inflation rose 0.6% last month, which is 7.2% if repeated for 12 months. The 3.7% annual rate includes a lot of data before March when the war started. Things are getting far worse. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

There’s also a simple question that I think is a very important one GDP/capita, 2025: Denmark—$76,970 Guinea-Bissau—$1,124 Why are white Danish researchers flying into one of the most resource-poor nations on earth to do a study that withholds a life-saving intervention from half of babies?
Holy shit FOUR members of the ethics committee in Denmark that gave the green light to allow the widely-condemned RFK Jr-funded trial to proceed in Guinea-Bissau have now resigned in protest This quote is 🔥 Great reporting by @melodyschreiber.com www.theguardian.com/society/2026...
