My new post on Eric Goldman's blog on the Vetter v. Resnik debacle at the Supreme Court and how truly wonderful it is that four justices are making millions from their side gigs with the world’s largest publisher.

This is the recent case where the trial judge used AI to write his order enjoining Mississipi's anti-DEI law. I want to note Judge Haynes' very very limited concurrence, where she implores (in my view) the new trial court to recognize that it is important to teach children not to discriminate.

If you have an iPhone w/ the current OS, go into Settings, scroll to the bottom to click on Apps, scroll down to M & go into the Messages app, and flick this switch “screen unknown senders”. This dumps 99% political text messages into a folder you can separately check.

These stories have become so commonplace, yet still so troubling. We should expect better of all lawyers and especially government lawyers.

You may know that my wife is mounting an Olympic sailing campaign, trying to become the sole US Olympian in her to the 2028 Games in LA She's now ranked 5th in North America & 207th in the world. But, we're out of the ability to self finance the campaign. I need your help to not let the dream die!

Okay, so @kathryntewson has discovered a set of linked, commonly controlled websites that are authoritatively giving false information on the difference between "attorney" and "lawyer," and are almost certainly AI generated. I want to talk about why AI gets this wrong.

Kathryn Tewson@kathryntewson.bsky.social

The linked website is not just non-authoritative, it has actively false information on it. Relying on the (almost certainly AI-generated) legal information on this website is VERY DANGEROUS.

In case you want to avoid AI in your library books (like I do)

Thanks to everyone surfacing this in my skyline I went in and looked for the setting, couldn't find it, reloaded Libby and there it was! Glad to be able to turn this off, even if publishers and authors are maybe being dishonest little shits about it. It's better than nothing.

I always have mixed feelings about these images. Yes, it's inspiring to see these college students committed to democracy, but the fact that they have to do anything remotely difficult to exercise their voting rights is enraging. Taking part in a democracy should be as easy as possible.

This is just beautiful to see

Ok law friends, who is watching Cupertino? So far I am charmed. Let’s discuss!

The narrative that Americans are divided on abortion is a lie to hide just how undemocratic bans are—and convince lawmakers to take weaker stances on abortion. ~70% of Deep South voters oppose abortion bans. I wrote about the implications of this:

I am not sure any lawyer involved with this can safely fulfill their ethical requirements of zealous representation? What happens when Stephen Miller calls the office every day? You know what Congress write a rider specifically designated the pre-existing counsel network.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

It's amazing how much of my research started by simply by looking at what "everyone knows" and asking: Really? - Does the USPTO REALLY reject 50% of applications? - Is it REALLY impossible for most designs to qualify for a design patent? - Did the first design patent REALLY claim a typeface?
