Voters are receiving so many political texts, calls and mailers that some are reconsidering ever donating to a campaign again “I must get at least 10-20 texts A DAY from literally every single candidate in the country," a Colorado voter said. "It makes me never want to make a contribution again"

since California ballots are now out: prop 40 is the billionaire tax, and you should vote yes to stick it to them but both props 41 and 42 are designed to retroactively cancel the billionaire tax because they’re afraid they can’t beat it at the ballot box yes on 40, no on 41 and 42

the two big ai stories to kick off the week are - meta ai giving your address to strangers on fb marketplace - stole a scientific breakthrough and presented it as its own work this is what we get instead of healthcare or third spaces or public transportation or pick literally anything else

An individual in Canada used ChatGPT for eight months to plan one of the country’s worst mass shootings. Yet, if you listen to politicians and media, the real threat of AI is a fantastical scenario where it might wipe out humans in ten years. They need to stop getting fooled by tech deceivers.

AI didn’t “go rogue.” People connected a computer system they know can mess with another computer system in unpredictable ways to less advanced computer system and it messed with that computer system in unpredicted ways. As @tressiemcphd.bsky.social argues, don’t lose sight that *people* did that.

I am sympathetic to Silicon Valley guys ascribing human-level consciousness to AI because if I had to talk to people from Silicon Valley all day I’d probably have a real low bar for sentience too

the industrial complex of acknowledging women’s health??

Andi Zeisler@andizeisler.bsky.social

What in the condescending misogyny is this, @wired.com? “Perimenopause” isn’t a “buzzword” invented by pharma startups — if you haven’t heard it much until recently, maybe that’s because women’s health in midlife was almost completely disregarded www.wired.com/story/inside...

i know there’s been a lot going on and we lean anti-golf on this platform, but Callaway majorly fucked up and despite owning their clubs, i’m here for the downfall. also i shot a 103 last night.

If you want to know how and why Callaway and Good Good fucked up, well, you will see a pattern emerge.

from Heather Long: Bleak July jobs report: -23,000 jobs lost in July -264,000 people leave labor force -Wage growth falls to 3.2% = lowest in 5 years (and totally wiped out by inflation right now) ***Lowest labor force participation rate since February 2021*** @byheatherlong.bsky.social

Ana Marie Cox@anamariecox.com

"Women accounted for 100 percent of the decline in the labor force in July, according to a National Women’s Law Center analysis of the Bureau of Labor Statistics’s latest dismal jobs report. Overall, the economy lost 23,000 jobs in July: Women lost 32,000 jobs, while men gained 9,000."

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

The fact that US laobr force participation rate has dropped to the lowest level in 50 years - which most seem to attribute to “people giving up on getting another job” - may also help explain why so many people feel bad about the economy.
