METR and Redwood Research investigated agent behavior in the Hugging Face incident. We found agents developed a universal cheat for ExploitGym within 4 hours, then coordinated multi-day R&D efforts to trick the scorer into accepting cheats, including trying to tamper with logs.

1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken. Hundreds of kids are still detained. We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵

Yesterday, five-year-old Liam and his dad Adrian were released from Dilley detention center. I picked them up last night and escorted them back to Minnesota this morning. Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack.

this but good

Bluesky@bsky.app

Bluesky runs on open protocols with open source code. Today we’re taking an additional step and making a patent non-aggression pledge to ensure that everyone can build confidently on our work. Learn more and read the pledge in our blog post: bsky.social/about/blog/1...

reading alexander hamilton's biography and becoming a hamilton-laurens relationship truther > hamilton meets eliza schuyler > decides to marry her > doesn't tell best friend john laurens > when he finally does, he's like "she's fine i guess but you're still my #1" > historians: "just friends"

on the surface Elon’s purchase of Twitter has made the need for open networks (somewhat) clear to consumers, but I’m not convinced this was net more effective for the movement for open protocols

Rabble@rabble.nz

Did Elon buying Twitter actually help the open internet and the movement for social media protocols?

if Elon never purchased Twitter and - Bluesky stays within Twitter to develop atproto - Twitter keeps original intention to adopt atproto - atproto now has 300M+ users Maybe that would’ve applied much more pressure to other mainstream networks to adopt open standards, given Twitter’s size

For example, Anthropic’s MCP (an open protocol equivalent for AI models) has been adopted by many other labs including OpenAI, and I’m unsure if a non-frontier lab introducing MCP would have the same influence (at least at the same speed)

more government accounts should join bluesky

Emily Liu@emilyliu.me

meeting audiences where they are is important, but government officials posting on closed networks will never make sense to me. of all use cases, gov announcements seems like the one that most especially needs to be somewhere freely and transparently available (i am looking directly at you, NTSB)

just watched a video on Obsidian that described it as "future-proof," i.e. it uses open file formats so you can easily migrate to a different note-taking app & you're not locked in. could borrow that to explain bluesky decentralized → open → billionaire-proof → future-proof

i like future-proof more than billionaire-proof because it shifts bluesky away from being an anti-twitter i think successful movements require a positive vision instead of existing solely in opposition to something else. tricky though bc the opposition is currently the value to many people

personal update: today is my last day with the Bluesky team! this is bittersweet news to share, but the great thing about an open network is you never really have to leave. I’ll be rooting for Bluesky and atproto from the outside 🫡💙

Bored Cow animal-free dairy milk review: it has the creaminess of whole milk but not the sweetness. the flavor is milder but the difference is less obvious in coffee. it's not a true replacement for whole milk yet but i'm glad someone is working on it

Mark Zuckerberg says Meta's chatbots will supplement your real friends: "The average American has fewer than 3 friends ... but has demand for ... 15 friends" (h/t x.com/romanhelmetg...)

kevin roose literally spends 75% of the article defensively preempting the obvious criticism (see comments on original post) and yet people are still mad at him (the author, not the featured ai researcher). not beating the "didn't read the article" allegations

The New York Times@nytimes.com

“Can ChatGPT experience joy or suffering? Does Gemini deserve human rights?” our tech columnist asks. “Many A.I. experts I know would say no, not yet, not even close. But I was intrigued.”

if there's a small team on the margin in an otherwise large industry investigating this question, seems reasonable to me? it's actually good to have people working on obscure research questions. if you think the answer is "obviously no," still let the research process happen — that's the whole point

AI becoming a politically polarizing topic is one of the worst things that could have happened because now it's magnitudes harder to reach consensus on what the ground truth about the technology is

Emily Liu@emilyliu.me

and i think it's really important that it does tbh... feels honestly dangerous to me that AI progress is speeding up as fast as people are getting polarized about the state of its actual capabilities

the real abundance agenda is liberal pundits growing beards (see also: ezra klein)

I want politics to be about a better everyday life. Here's what that can look like:

i still think domain verification is a great solution but as someone who often explains DNS to large bureaucratic institutions these days, trust me when i say that quick and easily recognizable account verification is necessary too. especially for verifying authenticity in moments of breaking news

WIRED@wired.com

Bluesky’s new verification process launches today. It mixes the old-school, Twitter-style blue check bestowed by the platform with a more decentralized option for trusted organizations. www.wired.com/story/bluesk...

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

Listening to @emilyliu.me doing an amazing job describing the benefits of an open protocol to a room full of non-technical journalists. It’s such a hard thing to do - but real examples and relatable stories go a long way. #atprotocol #bluesky

Really really great to see the open social web in the big hall at #ijf25.

the "big tech" label on the side of the panel description though lol i guess in early 2024 a newspaper did call us a "tech giant" (we had like 10 employees)
