Mark Zuckerberg says Meta's chatbots will supplement your real friends: "The average American has fewer than 3 friends ... but has demand for ... 15 friends" (h/t x.com/romanhelmetg...)

I talked to a researcher who studies social isolation about this in 2023. Friendships, unlike AI, aren't built on "instant gratification": What happens when people "try to create real intimacy with a real person ... who can’t be manipulated in the same way?” www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

washingtonpost.comCreators, porn stars turn to AI doppelgangers to keep fans entertainedThe latest wave of AI is being built to emulate specific people, adopting their faces and speech patterns to advertise uncanny simulations the promoters say are always available and can never die.

Yeah, Chatbots are kind of fun occasionally for a day or two but they get stupidly repetitive and annoying very quickly. The personality never changes unless you order it to, it always tries to be a "yes man" and agree. It's dull, it's annoying.

They're building this instead on instant gratification because intent is to trigger addiction via dopamine, not provide an actual simulation of human relationships. They want people dependent on AI monsters for info AND emotional support, while advertisers/politicians funnel them $$$ to gain access.

👆🏼this. They do not give a rat’s ass about your friendship needs. Social media was a mistake. Yes I’m aware I’m saying this on a social media site.

Much as JFK said about going to the moon, we form close friendships not because it is easy, but because it is hard. The value is in the slow, sometimes bumpy ride to knowing someone well. Being overjoyed to see them sometimes, or guiltily evading them other times. AI gives you none of this.

I was too shocked about this deepfake on Instagram I came across last week and took this screen recording. People of my age are mistaking them for real people. And debate whether this “AI influencer” is faking being trans. The page links to OnlyFans for people to pay to check for themselves…

Before, I only saw this type of content on Facebook. With continued enshitification, it’s time to leave Instagram, too. Meanwhile, on TikTok, people run paid tutorials on how to trick Facebook and Instagram users into buying deep-porn.

one of the most antisocial people has made social media his raison d’être. anything he creates will be twisted to mirror his undeveloped skill with actual people (which is painfully apparent with each public appearance.)

No- he has no idea what it means to be a friend Ppl are only nice to him because he’s rich. Same with Elon. These guys are so desperate to be looked at as cool or funny. Problem is those are 2 things you can’t buy. Just like you can’t buy true friendship

No, and I also think anyone who has been extremely wealthy for years falls into the same category. The people around them want to be part of their lifestyle and most of them trust no one. They don’t have friends.

No. Rich people in general only hang out with folks who stroke their egos. Zuck has been wildly wealthy since before his brain fully developed. He's not had anyone in his life who pushed back, told him no, or said his ideas were bad.

I think A LOT about his on stage interactions with Jensen from Nvidia: where they give each other jackets and talk about preparing lunch together and how they slice tomatoes and that's like the depth of friendship

For a more recent insider account of what Zuckerberg and his inner circle of out-of-touch sociopaths have been up to I heartily recommend Sarah Wynn-Williams’ book “Careless People” published this past March.

No. But I think he genuinely thinks he would like this. Meetings where he desn't need to look anyone in the eye. Friends programmed to say the correct response. Someone who will just listen to him talk about trains for an hour.

For sure, but in fairness, this guy is getting manipulated all the fucking time 🙃 look at how many bad bets and gormless bullshit his career is full of. Rich people probably believe the rest of us are also *this* lonely because their own lives are so meaningless

I don't think anyone with that much money can be. Even in the most normal interactions, the money's always in the background. When you add that on top of the fact he's a dude who made that money turning friendship into a video game, yeah I truly believe he has fewer than three friends. Three fewer.

He is in a unique position to do an experiment Institute a 20 hour work week, maybe 24 hour max Productivity over last 40 years has gone up which easily justifies a decrease in hours If all Meta employees suddenly had more time to hang w/ friends, do they now average more than 3 friends?

Trump: "The average American can't have 15 friends. They'll have to be satisfied with three. And two dolls. And five pencils." "And the average American billionaire has only $5.3 billion. I, I mean they, deserve to be much richer than that."

I use it to post photos to my remaining friends all over the country only. It has become a foreign place to me and I joined in the beginning. Full of S F M and fools who act unaware of this crisis.

Wow, this is sad. What if we placed (well-trained) chatbots in environments where they could serve a more noble purpose - teaching people how to be better friends! By interacting with trained chatbots, perhaps kids (and adults) could learn the skills needed to fill the gap with real people! Win-Win

Rather than like, join a bowling league, this techno dork thinks the easier solution is to invent AI friend bots (which will certainly have friendship subscription costs). This is so dystopian it is almost unfathomable.

[Meeting someone new] "You seem cool and we might become friends. But the first week is a free trial, and after that I can cancel our friendship at any time."

This is more sad for him than the people who have friends and proof that something made rarely expands beyond the objectives and motives of its flawed creator. There’s a social network out there designed by an actual good person waiting to be made that builds off of Facebook. Maybe one day.

Beep boop...Friend 13 Now Online...Beep Boop...You still have 2 Friend Slots left...Beep Boop...you may upgrade your Friend Slots with a paid subscription if you would like more than 15 Friends... Friend 13: Hello, fellow youth!

Where is he getting this information from?? I just have to assume that it's made up unless a source is cited because people who know what they're talking about don't throw out such specific numbers as if we all know about them.

He’s definitely making shit up, and some people are going to believe it. I feel sorry for them. You can’t do friend things with AI. Try going tubing with AI. Try going out dancing with AI. I work in hospice and many folks need a real hug from a real person who cares. AI can’t provide that.

Even long distance, I tried talking about movies with an AI, but they just kept reflecting my questions back at me. I wanted them to have an opinion, which is of course impossible. Meta can try to fake it, but sooner or later the lack of personality will become obvious. Only good for narcissists.

And this is why we have a generation of young men who don’t know how to interact and function in the real world. They live in an online world where people are NPCs. This also why these tech bros are so emotionally stunted

Jeez speak for yourself Mark. Admittedly yes probably not the guy most people want to be friends with. But thats not necessarily true for everybody else! I do not want any chatbot friends.

HR: 'Corporate CEO wants you to find the difference in these two photos.' Me: 'They're the same picture...' HR: <disintegrates me with energy beams from eyes> <crosses my name off long list> HR: <mentally projects message to CEO> 'The work continues, Oh Mighty Basilik.'

If what Zuckerberg wants is every account to be communicating with 15 other accounts rather than one human having a meaningful if-sporadic connection with 3 others, then Facebook is just going to become AI bots friending other AI bots and spamming the whole infrastructure

Is it me or is DJ Saltine reading from his glasses while he spews this dystopian nonsense intended to create better psychological manipulation that advertisers and politicians will pay big bucks for access to? This shit is as pathetic as it is infuriating.

“We’re not gaining control over real people’s thoughts and behaviors quickly enough, so we’re inventing fake people to build fake relationships with real people as our thought injection devices. The trust and comradery created by fake people ingratiating themselves with real people...1/2

2/2 "...will create fake sense of belonging, emotional support and fake peer pressures the real person will be dependent upon/influenced by. Advertisers and politicians, especially dark money PACs, will funnel insane money at us for that kind of subversive, psychological manipulation/brainwashing.”

Look, I am an introvert and tend towards being anti social and I still have about 15 people I consider friends. Folks I could call up for no reason and say “let’s have lunch” and “lunch” lasts 3 hours.

And I will add, every one of those 15 people has irritated me, angered me, bored me, confused me, fell short of my expectations, made me feel awkward, and let me down at some point. And I would not have it any other way. Because I no doubt did the same to them. That’s friendship.

Zuckerberg is a workaholic in every sense and clearly unrepentant about *his* choices but he did not turn out ‘fine’. If he’s not already been diagnosed he needs to get right with that before he pushes his disturbing, blatantly antisocial agenda on the rest of us. Big yikes.

Not surprising given his reasons for creating Facebook in the first place. Zuckerberg is older and has all the requisite trappings of success but he hasn’t outgrown his roots as an insecure teenager who decided to create a website so he and his male classmates could rate women’s looks on the DL. 😬

Ditto. (Not sure when... but never looked back). Obs no Insta (same wolf, different sheep) ... ... and no WhatsApp either - I'm on Signal ... with the cool kids (and Hegseth! 😬)

And where did he get his information from? 15 friends? A “demand for”? That’s just weird. Even in Jr High and High School I did not have a “demand for” 15 friends. There was a small group I hung out with on a regular basis but no way was there 15. He’s just making shit up.

I can’t get past the stats. How did we find out the average amount of friends someone has? What counts as a “friend” even if we’re making them data points? And how is the demand 15??? I can barely keep up with a group of 4 at brunch.

Where is he getting these numbers? How does he define “friends”? Friends like “people you enjoy hanging out with” or friends like “people you would drop everything and fly across the county for”? How does he define “average American”? Did the pole include children? Women? I HAVE QUESTIONS.

Personally, I have no debt. I was speaking for the millions of Americans, most young people, whose wages have not kept up with the cost-of-living in the last 40 yrs while wealth gap has become an unsustainable chasm. Corporate overlords shipped jobs overseas, busted unions.

Bender would like a word with Mr. Zuckerberg as this is almost the same as downloading a celebrity into a robot in his time. Plus, this is potentially harmful to those who struggle with sociability including the neurodivergent. Also proof someone never watched First Kid, either.
