American balkanization is going to be messy but necessary, and in the end, a good thing for the planet and its inhabitants. In the meantime, I’m considering changing my display name to “Grover Cleveland Steamer”. Or perhaps “Francisco Bizarro”.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Looking forward to an era of bespoke code, where hipsters lovingly hand-craft subroutines. They’ll talk about modules and packages like sommeliers talk about fine wines … “You’ll find this C++ library offers notes of inheritance balanced against a robust backdrop of templatized type independence”

I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive

"I was told," said the princess, "that the point of fairy tales is not to tell children dragons exist, but that they can be killed." "Oh, absolutely!" said the dragon. "You agree?" "These rich, selfish, powerful, cruel beings that need killing, did you think they're literally dragons, princess?"

GAINESVILLE! They keep telling us Florida is a red state. But y’all packed that auditorium so full that Senator @sanders.senate.gov and I had to take the rally OUTSIDE to speak to the more than 3000 who came out!   Florida, we’re going to WIN this thing! #AngieforFlorida #Gainesville

“Coding is hard”

The exciting part about the Anthropic vibe coded settlement backend is that no matter how many times you fix your information, the same broken bits will reappear. It will be total madness. The entire backend is broken because, AS THEY TOLD ME ON THE PHONE, they know it is because they vibe coded.

Every time I mention how much I hate James Carville, even in the context of a joke, someone on here will try to tell me that he's a great fighter for Democracy and he's doing his best to make things better and I need to give him respect. Get it through your head, James Carville is a malignancy.

"I would rather have the Republicans keep the house." - James Carville

One of the few places you can see a 60-year old guy with a beer gut wearing castoff shit from a military surplus store strutting around as an arvn lieutenant colonel. Buddy, you were 10 when that war ended.

It’s incredible how we’re grown-ass adults, olds even, and yet when we go to visit mom it’s like we’re 5 years old again. Sneaking ramen and snacks and goodies upstairs to eat in bed. Crumbs! In bed! Like Gandalf on the bridge at khazad-dûm.

this is so obviously correct it is deeply bizarre and corrosive how many people who should know better are unwilling to simply say it

Ossoff: "In my view, based upon the evidence I've seen thus far, the president's misconduct, abuse of power, and corruption, already exceed any prior standard for impeachment."

There are a whole lot of people whose citizenship is not backed up by immaculate documentation or who bent a regulation in navigating the immigration system. I might be one of them. Let’s not start down this road. It doesn’t lead anywhere good.

There is absolutely no viable path forward for this country that doesn’t hinge on extreme accountability for everyone involved in this administration. They’re going to whine about politicization and credulous media types will echo them, but the thing is, they’ve committed tons of obvious crimes!

I do not think an exec branch led by a man who thinks he is entitled to treat federal agents as an arm of his firm, refers to Somali Americans as “garbage” and has said racist things specifically about Omar is capable of neutrally applying the law to her, to put it mildly apnews.com/article/ilha...

I no longer say “see you in the camps”. That’s out of fashion. I now say “See you on the eastern airlines deportation flight to Rwanda”. Much more relevant! Unfortunately, I will not be available to say “see you in the shallow mass-graves”.

Why assume the AI wants you alive?

Florida is home to the largest Haitian community in the nation. I’m demanding that Rick Scott and Absent Ashley Moody use the influence they claim to have in Washington to push the Senate to pass S. 4814, which would reinstate TPS for Haitians until 2029. #AngieForFlorida

This is an eye opening article. My only conclusion is that, if India truly wishes to become a world power, it needs to first euthanize 90% of its male population.

Albert Pinto@70sbachchan.bsky.social

Superb from David Oks. How an equally poor China in 1950s stole a march over India in 3 decades by obliterating its repressive old social order, liberating women & investing more in mass health & mass education. davidoks.blog/p/why-china-...

I know it’s more than a little insane, but it’s also very impressive how capital investment can mobilize so quickly and so massively. Like the nimblest 800 pound gorilla you ever saw.

The AI build-out is on track to become the biggest economic bet in U.S. history, dwarfing the investments made to fund other huge U.S. infrastructure projects such as the railroads, the highway system and the plumbing for the internet. www.wsj.com/economy/the-...

This is Maeve. She may be the sweetest, most good natured, most trusting dog I have ever met. She was abandoned in DC last week, and since I’m not able to adopt a dog now, I had to turn her over to the Brandywine Animal Shelter. I want to make sure this absolute delight of a dog finds a good home.

The world has made real progress in steering away from some of the darkest climate futures where global emissions doubled (or more) this century. But as David Wallace-Wells and I note in today's NYT, we are not out of the woods yet, and climate uncertainty is not our friend: www.nytimes.com/2026...

This is shocking to hear! Einstein kept a picture of Maxwell on his office wall and admired him more than any other scientist. Every fall I teach a whole course about his work. This is like hearing that Westminster Abbey might be purchased so a new car rental place can built on Newton’s grave.

Help! Parton Community Council has 60 days to raise £70k to buy Parton Kirk (resting place of James Clerk Maxwell). They plan to turn it into a visitor centre celebrating our great hero! The other buyers could turn it into long-term storage 😬 Even £5 would help 🙏🧪⚛️ www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding...

Now would be a good time for the people of Venezuela to rise up and take their country — and their oil — back.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: What do you make of the Gulf nations meeting with Iran? TRUMP: I don't care. That's up to them. We'll ultimately get out. Unless we decide to stay and keep the oil! Like Venezuela
