450 million years ago the majority of life in the oceans had soft bodies that did not fossilize very well. Their fossilized remains often appear as blurry stains upon a rock, but now and then a specimen is found with a well preserved body part, like this strange marrelomorph.

Just learned that Ian Fleming (yes, the James Bond author) had a major role in starting OSS - which became the CIA. AND two if the early OSS agents working together on psychological warfare in Asia, we're Gregory Bateson and Julia Child because apparently we've been living in cartoon for a long time
If the only thing you have to note about the rising tide of fascism is that we have to let it rise far enough to be over someone else's head in order to stop it, I don't think your strategy is particularly good.
"A hunter-gatherer who lived in Indonesia as early as 25,000 years ago may have regularly sucked on betel nuts to release their psychoactive properties." 🏺
Oh shit, my debut as a rapper* is next Friday. I might be experiencing an extended mid-life manic episode
*I have won many slam competitions in the last 10 years but next week is the first time I will perform with a DJ at a party
It's a #LongWeekend. You're not *supposed* to be paying attention which is why #MarkCarney did the standard oily (pardon the pun) political move of releasing an absolutely DAMNING #ClimateChange report in a #FridayNewsDump. He doesn't want media talking about it or YOU to know about it 🧵#cdnpoli
Interested in doing a PhD in philosophy of animal minds in lovely Murcia?

Please consider applying if this is up your street!
TIL, touching the electric fence with your forehead hits different than touching it with an arm or leg. Instead of pain, the universe blinked, my legs buckled, and then I was on the ground feeling very confused about why God would choose that moment to smack me down
We keep discussing ”strategies” for teaching in the age of AI to avoid talking about resources. It’s so boring!! The strategy is invest $ to hire people, lower class size, support research-engaged learning & stop measuring the worth of disciplines in relation to # of enrollments and majors.

We asked whether people in the general population endorsed misidentification-like delusions.
They do! Surprisingly often.
If Canada gives up the ability to regulate digital platforms in the name of regulatory "alignment" with the United States, in exchange for lowering tariffs on steel, aluminum and automobiles, it's difficult to overstate how much of a catastrophic defeat that would be for us.
God: Okay, let me see. You're going to have a near-perfect memory for song lyrics.
Me: Cool, so I'll be able to sing well?
God: Oh Me, no. Not at all.
Me: Well at least the memory thing will come in handy in day to day life. Names and stuff?
God: No, it'll be specific to the lyrics thing.
Carney tables a bill to okay widespread use of banned pesticides. Dozens of Canada's civil society's health and environmentat organizations all band together, combining their voices to call for the bill to be withdrawn.
It changes as much a fart in the wind. 8/

Carney supporters desperate to pivot every conversation to Poilievre tell us that at least the libs listen and the cons don't, but the evidence for this is zero. "Public consultation" is barely theatre at this point. They'll allow public comments, but only the super naive pretend they listen. 6/
This goes a long way to explain the disconnect between people feeling poorer and economists claiming the opposite. Even if my income rises faster than inflation, my real spending power decreases if everything I buy falls apart faster than it used to
I remember when someone tried to argue with me about this on here, saying it was survivorship bias, and not my own comparisons of the same brands' material quality and stitching over the past 30+ years.
Anyway, yes shit is actually more poorly made now than it used to be even a short while ago.
Here goes fam, let's see if Wellbutrin will help with both depression and ADHD and also not try to suffocate me in my sleep!
For those keeping score - cyprilex was amazing for depression but gave me sleep apnea and dexedrine worked wonders for almost 20 years but now it makes me grumpy af
So many things I didn't pursue in my 20s and 30s because I couldn't answer "what's the end-game for this?" Now I play drums, paint minis, and write poetry (among other hobbies) because I like to, I don't need to see a path to income or recognition for justification
One of the great joys of my adult life has been realizing that I can just pick up a new skill every so often, take a fun little class in it weekly for a year or two, and simply enjoy meeting people and getting medium proficient and not attempting to become professional in it at all!
