1/5 The green & blue pathways very likely have overly optimistic assumptions about: - climate sensitivity - carbon-cycle feedbacks - scaling carbon dioxide removal - methane cuts The four papers in this thread 🧵 explain why we’ve been underestimating how little room is left.

The United Nations Environment Programme warned global warming could reach up to 2.8°C this century if current government policies continue, a worse prediction than last year. This UNEP report is yet another alarm, but governments keep hitting the snooze button. #Cop31

Sorry, but "good news" could only be strictly enforced global plans for immediate deep emission cuts, achieving at least global net-zero emissions ASAP (i.e. before 2050) and deliver sustained net-negative CO2 emissions. See page 4 of the report. Is there anybody out there who wants to achieve that?

We're currently on one of the faster tracks that lead to an early AMOC collapse according to this paper, adding a little over +2.5 ppm/year. Reducing the increase in atmospheric CO2 to +0.5 ppm/year would stave off the collapse. That requires something like 80% emission reduction. And rapidly, too.
A striking climate-model result suggests AMOC may have a rate-induced tipping point. 👉 Slow CO₂ increase: AMOC stable to +5.5°C 👉 Faster increase: collapse around +2°C Same climate system. Very different outcome. The rate of warming matters. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

You don't hear politicians arguing that there's no point in casting ballots because you're just one vote! Why do they apply that faulty logic when it comes to national carbon emissions?
Another logical fallacy. Everybody and every nation need to make their contribution to stop global warming. If small contributions were not relevant, I could stop paying taxes, because you cannot build a school or hospital from my contributions... 🧪 #EconSky #PoliSky

I’m a climate scientist. Let me fix this headline. “Nearly a century ago, scientists showed that burning fossil fuels warms the planet. Today, we know human emissions account for over 100% of the warming. Yet dark money and disinformation still work to keep Americans addicted to fossil fuels.”
Scientists have reached a consensus that human behavior is a big driver of climate change—but Americans aren't buying it.

New from me: China made a dramatic change to its carbon emissions numbers in the 15th five-year plan, erasing half of the previously reported emissions growth from 2020 to 2025. In absolute terms, the change is equal to the total emissions of Germany or South Korea.
Analysis: China’s new carbon metric leaves Germany-sized gap in its emissions ✍️ @laurimyllyvirta.bsky.social Read here: buff.ly/RfVDxLT

Jutun kaavio kuvaa tilannetta tragikoomisen hyvin. Metsähallitukselle ei riitä, että heillä on jo tuo koko neliön vasen tumma osa hakattavaksi, vaan nyt pitäisi EU-sääntöjen vastaisesti päästä hävittämään myös nuo vähäiset oikean laidan metsät. (Vars. luonnonmetsiähän on Suomessa jäljellä enää 1-2%)
Ensin yritetään estää ennallistamisasetuksen hyväksyminen. Kun se ei onnistunut, yritetään vesittää sen soveltaminen Suomessa. Hinnan maksaa Suomen luonto.
