🤞this place stays like Irish Twitter c.2010. Dublin, politics, history, random interesting stuff, football, the world. Used to work in NGOs, now public sector (Further Ed & Training). Suppose I should say Labour Party (Ireland) member, for transparency.

Kids know it's OK to hug their granny if they want to. What they don't know is that it's OK to *not* hug granny when they do not want to. It's important to teach that to children and these people don't want us to.

Darach Ó Séaghdha@darach.bsky.social

Yes, Brenda. All week those lefty freaks were trying to ban people hugging their granny. That’s definitely what happened. Another good faith take from the person who wants what’s best for everyone!

Hysterical and predictable reaction to an advert on Liveline and earlier in the Dáil from the usual suspects. Text DRCC to 50300 to donate to DRCC. They really do fantastic work!

Excellent piece 👌

Thanks to Ciara Ní Bhroin for writing this piece on the DRCC consent ad row - props to @aidanobrien.bsky.social who gets a mention www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/comm...

For donkeys years I've been asking small children "Would you like a hug, a high five or a wave?". I think some manners in acknowledging another person is important, but the wave achieves that from a distance with no contact required.

re: not making kids hug and kiss people, I saw a great video ages ago that recommended adults ask "do you want a hug goodbye?" instead of "can I have a hug goodbye?" because it prioritises what the child is comfortable with over what the adult wants, I think it's a small but smart change

Thanks was just on my way to look for a link to do this too.

I personally didn’t like being slobbered on by old family friends with stinky breath that I hardly knew when I was a kid. Plus nobody should have to build resilience so manky politicians can invade your personal space & pull you in to shake your hand in an overly familiar way once you’re a voter.

The Journal@thejournal.ie

Adverts run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre looking at consensual hugs between children and their grandparents has been suspended after criticism. Aontú's Peader Tóibín called the ad "bonkers", as he urged a "need to build resilience" among children. www.thejournal.ie/grandparents...

Lots of adults have uncomfortable memories of being forced to hug or kiss older people and that’s a good enough reason to centre the child’s comfort before we even consider the very serious stuff.

Literally just get rid of the tacky junk shops and have a sensible Garda visibility. I personally love that the GPO is both an iconic historic building and still a fully functional post office. Making it purely more of a tourist attraction would only cheapen O’Connell Street even further.

Dublin Inquirer@dublininquirer.com

Maybe people shouldn't be able to collect social welfare at the GPO, Arnotts lobbies. The company behind the Henry Street department store raised the idea with the man in charge of the regeneration of the city centre, returns show.

I did two (2) scary phone calls today that I didn’t want to do. WHERE IS MY PRIZE? (I may be ancient but I have a young person attitude to phone calls.)

Sorry it’s not just the inaccuracies, which are stupid, but whatevs, it’s the really gross weird aura about the bloody things. And the worminess. They need to delete every last picture and never do it again. #shudder

JustEat has apologised and begun removing inaccurate AI-generated pictures from Irish takeaway menus, but plans to keep developing the technology. AI-generated mistakes spotted so far include a batter burger with deep-fried buns and a picture of sushi used for scampi. jrnl.ie/7198965

Oh look public servants are actually necessary.

Due to operational difficulties arising from the ongoing work-to-rule industrial action, our recycling centres remain closed. The Council is working to restore normal service as soon as possible. We will provide updates on recycling centres on https://fingal.live/47z397fb and via social media.

For 10 weeks, we asked five AI chatbots the same questions every day. None repeated the core misinformation they were tested on, but they reported proposals as law, quoted outdated figures and gave different answers on different days. Our first report: fullfact.org/ai-benchmark...

I’m old enough to remember when official Ireland used to make grand pronouncements about how we were going to be European leaders in this stuff. I knew it was balderdash at the time because they were all talk and no action but it’s depressing to be right about it.

Philip Boucher-Hayes@philipb-h.bsky.social

Ireland’s performance on #climate mitigation is the worst in Europe and will still be the worst in 2030. In this infographic that’s measured by the size of the gap between the left of the green bar graph (cuts achieved) and the blue dot (2030 goal).

Official canon will be 0.45 because Zacharia served 5 days and Scaramucci 11. Actual truth is that Scaramucci managed 10.5 days and Zacharia 4.5, the first of which was a public holiday, so it’s 0.43 or 0.33 depending whether you include it or not. I’m splitting the difference.

Glad to see the Commission has run the numbers on why electoral posters are a red herring when it comes to carbon/plastic/recycling. The posters from an entire election equate to “one third of coffee cups used a day, or two flights to the United States".

RTÉ News@news.rte.ie

More than 400,000 names have been removed from the electoral register in the past three years because individuals have emigrated, received multiple ballots incorrectly or have died www.rte.ie/news/ireland...

When I calculated it in about 2014 or 2016 it was one one-way flight, I dunno if that means posters getting bigger/more of them or aeroplanes getting smaller but either way, lobby businesses to take fewer flights or tax the rich or tax paper coffee cups or something else that will achieve something.

“Chambers delivered a budget that did not cause political problems.” This is nonsense. The political problems haven’t even started yet, because in a lot of cases the actual funds available for various programmes and projects haven’t even been communicated at this stage to the bodies that run them.
