There are 3 certainties in life: Death, Taxes, and any conversation with @stephengrahamjones.com being the coolest listen possible. (Also, related to my last post about The Weird - his story ‘Little Lambs’ is in there and it’s sooooo fucking good)

Are we in a HORROR RENAISSANCE?🩸 Ep. 225 airs tomorrow, with guest @stephengrahamjones.com and co-hosts @adrianmgibson.bsky.social & Greta Kelly discussing the strength of the modern horror landscape. Available Oct. 20: linktr.ee/SFFAddicts youtube.com/@fanfiaddict @sagapressbooks.bsky.social

Genuinely formative for me. So many cool stories in here.

There's a lot more easily-accessible weird fiction available now than there used to be, but this 1,100 page monster from 2011, edited by @annvandermeer.bsky.social and @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social should be on everyone's shelf.

This type of unfounded accusation is becoming more and more common against writers of a certain background. If The Atlantic care so much about AI use, why don't they go after the writers who admit using it like James Frey or Olga Tokarczuk or Anthony Horowitz? It's plain double standards.

Haha wow check these narcissistic scabs. They won’t miss me as a reader as I’d mercifully dodged the pleasure up to now, but imagine being so desperate to see your ickle bwooks on screen that you go all AI Tommy Wiseau? No one’s gonna watch, knucklefucks. And we won’t forget, either.

This is news to some people, so I present to you: authorsfirst.com Peter F. Hamilton. Conn Iggulden. David W. Ball. R. A. Salvatore. All people who made a good living from writing.

Just me or is this season of Slow Horses not quite working as well as others have? Obviously Lamb is superb, but outside that it’s just got a few too many clunky moments, bad character choices, and messy pacing for me. (Also lol no you would not find that name as a novelty number plate)

Welp, confirmation from a market that gen AI art is used when there are "no other options." No other options?? SEriOSLy? 🤔 Let's start a thread of where you can find art to use in the public domain because I'm sick of this shit! Please reply below with your favorite resources. 👇

the big AI danger is not companies suddenly inventing skynet - that's marketing rubbish, musk promising mars colonies by 2030 type stuff. the danger is companies claiming to have invented skynet and then putting what they actually have, a chatbot, in charge of stuff that's important

One of the first "outrageous" claims I saw as Jason Arday's media hounding unfolded was that he ran 30 marathons in 35 days! Wow! What a thing to claim! And the newspapers all suggested there was no evidence he actually did it. Well, they clearly didn't look very hard 🙄 🧵 1/26

Boy, sure can’t wait for Bacigalupi’s The Water Knife to be talked about in the same omniscient breath as Parable of The Sower 🫠

I know most people don't care about the upcoming water wars (the next decade is going to be wild...), but this is really interesting stuff: abcnews.com/US/federal-g...

AI Guy Asks AI To Help Him Read Difficult Books

Brandon Friedman@brandonfriedman.bsky.social

Axios writer: I melted my brain with AI. Not only can I no longer read, but I don't even understand the purpose of reading anymore. Here's how you can also do this. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...

Zoo City, Lauren Beukes The Employees, Olga Ravn Ammonite, Nicola Griffith China Mountain Zhang, Maureen F. McHugh The Salt Oracle, Lorraine Wilson A Memory Called Empire, Arkady Martine Are You Happy Now, Hanna Jameson (And obviously anything by Butler or Le Guin… but especially Dawn for me)

Hey guy readers! Quote this with some books by women and nonbinary authors that you recommend. A few from me: Meg Elison's Book of the Unnamed Midwife R.F. Kuang's Poppy War Caitlin Rozakis's Dreadful Fonda Lee's Jade City Sarah Gailey's Echo Wife Premee Mohamed's Annual Migration of Clouds

18, working at a wildlife park. Man turned up in his truck saying he was ‘here to shag the alpacas’. I was told to walk him through, wait til he finished, walk him back out. That was the day I learned ‘shag’ meant ‘shear’ but fuck me the walk down to the farmyard section was a nervous one.

NEW EPISODE ❌❌❌THE RED FLAG-ISODE❌❌❌ This week we talked about things that should give you pause when working with literary agents--what's normal, what isn't, and what you should do about it! soundcloud.com/printrunpodc...

What really pisses me off is the ‘author’ of the story claims to be a ‘sustainability advocate’. They’re also CEO of an ‘AI powered personal growth platform’ and boast they ‘embrace contradictions and paradoxes with ease’ They don’t give a fuck, basically. Oh, and they have a deal with PRH.

Apex Magazine and Book Company@apexmag.bsky.social

We have decided to remove a short story from Issue 153 of Apex Magazine. After meeting with our reading and editorial teams, we'd like to share with you what happened, and importantly, how we plan to move forward from here. Thank you for sticking with us. 💜👽

*to be clear, I’m not pissed off with Apex and don’t think they did anything wrong - they shouldn’t have to do a background check on every author and I appreciate their transparency

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by @stephengrahamjones.com was simply extraordinary. Straight onto my all timers list. Read it now. Before everyone sees the movie adaptation that’s absolutely begging to be made. The voice man, ahh the voice. You want to experience your very own version of this. Trust.

It’s that special time that only comes around once every 4 years: People sharing vids of the Japanese fans tidying up after themselves and going ‘oh wow the Japanese are so civilised, why don’t we do that?’ and then immediately forgetting about it for another 4 years.

LOVE this one today from Steff Sirois, and we think you should love it with us! "Eventually, we’ll watch a wrecking ball smash through the curved glass of the sunroom like it never mattered. The last time I was in there, you still had a body..." https://www.havehashad.com/egup9

havehashad.comMy Local Wendy’s is Slated for Demolition by Steff SiroisOn the day it happens, a small crowd of us will watch from the smoke shop parking lot across the street in camping chairs. We’ll watch the workers get in their giant machines and bark orders at each…

This is so much fun! Incredible worldbuilding. Well worth your time (and balance of probability you’re probably doomscrolling a Reddit forum at some point today anyway - so make it this one)

Fraudsters are AI-mincing books and republishing them onto Amazon. This was done to The Isle in the Silver Sea - I assume in the hope people would accidentally click on it. It's been removed, but this is a warning of something to look out for, to my fellow authors.

I love CluesBySam but the new directional clues, with that added layer of ambiguity, just read to me like: ‘My FIRST is in left, but never in right, Above or below, there’s a criminal in sight. Which one is guilty, who am I to say? But don’t forget - today is opposite day!’
