Inspired by Greta Thunberg's Fridays For Future Movement, we meet outside the Dáil every Friday from 1pm to 2pm since late 2018 to keep the need for climate justice front and centre.
🍂Thanks to Ceara from the excellent Book of Leaves podcast for having us on to talk about why we need more people calling for aviation to do its fair share for climate action.

This was us yesterday. Apparently we're a bit mixed up on the exact number of weeks and haven't quite reached the 8 year mark yet, but we won't quibble over that when there are much bigger things at stake! #ActOnClimate
Govt is regressing on climate action, with plans to import LNG, to lift the Dublin Airport passenger cap, to raise public transportation fares, the glut of data centres, the extension of the nitrates derogation and the list goes on. Join us any Friday between 1pm & 2pm to apply pressure on Govt!
Participants today included people from Tuvalu and Nepal which was really special. Sadly, these countries are drastically affected by the worsening climate crisis that's being caused by rich countries like Ireland.
It was also wonderful to have students from Belvedere join us.
We're keeping up our weekly presence outside the Dáil. Just haven't been recording it here. So this is a bit of a catch up of photos from recent weeks.

📈It remains unconscionable that our Government continue to pursue even more polluting flight traffic, when experts are warning of increased likelihood of climate breakdown.

Absolutely sickening. Israeli bulldozers wrecking solar farms in southern Lebanon yesterday.
It’s exactly what we’ve come to expect from an “army” that bombs hospitals, schools and refugee camps & slaughters children for fun.
Imagine if we and the media spent as much time discussing real solutions to this fuel crisis as we do on the continued obsession with aviation and maintaining business as usual.
Pod of this week’s Last Word on the environment with Matt Cooper is now available.
Also had a good hop off the new Sitka Spruce ‘book’ being circulated to primary schools by the timber industry.

📣 A public inquiry into the proposed gold mine in the Sperrins — supposedly for the public, but not giving them time or opportunity to respond to key evidence

4/The climate is now changing in a way that is bringing us out of the hospitable, stable period which has allowed the development of modern farming- bad news for farmers which is bad news for everyone
I don't often think Matt Cooper is dead wrong, but I certainly do on his call to scrap carbon taxes, which, apart from being a terrible idea, would also hand the far-right "protestors" a massive win and embolden them for future chaos.

Open letter from 16 organisations to Minister O'Brien calling on him to urgently halt the Government’s interventions to legislate exemption from climate obligations for the Dublin Airport cap.

I sat through a wonderful concert tonight that had only two parts of a trio - the petrol pumps are dry - and I realised that if *this* is the trigger that convinces Irish people to switch to EVs, the irony would be exquisite.
The only way to durably protect hauliers - and the economy - against fossil fuel shocks is to support them to electrify trucks.
Sales of electric trucks in China outsold diesel trucks last December.
So far this year, only one electric HVG was newly registered in Ireland.

“Red meat is actually very good for human health” says health expert/CEO of Dawn Meats, Niall Browne.
Browne is just as completely, delusionally wrong about land-use impacts of plant-based diets vs meat, but hard to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on not understanding it.
Madness. Approving a motorway in a climate crisis.
Roads don't reduce traffic, they create it.
It's induced demand: build it, they will drive.
Meanwhile, public and active transport get sidelined. More emissions. More inactivity. More locked-in carbon.
We're pouring concrete on a burning planet.
Planning permission has been granted for the long-awaited Galway City Ring Road.
The 18-kilometre route will run from the M6 motorway in the east of the city to west of the village of Bearna and includes a new crossing over the River Corrib.

I'm struggling to process the layers of irony here.
Fuel price protestors, blockading roads and fuel depots, have caused more disruption than a war in the Middle East that stopped a good share of global oil trade.
As reported on @virginmedianews.bsky.social at 12:30: Government fears one major retail fuel operator will have empty tanks nationwide as early as tomorrow, if ongoing blockades of fuel depots are not ended. A source said this was “unconscionable” when Ireland does not have an actual fuel shortage
Just when we thought it couldn't get worse:
New law means major energy projects won't be checked for their climate impact
They're ramming through laws so they can ram through climate-wrecking projects
and undermining our legislative system in the process
www.irishtimes.com/politics/202...
If #climate protesters had ever caused even a fraction of the disruption now being experienced across Ireland, there would likely be calls by now from rural TDs for the return of the death penalty.
🚲🚶♀️🚌 As we're rightly reminded by our Govt, our journeys count in climate emergency.
⚠️ But they seem to have forgotten flying less! www.
wri.org/insights/climate-friendly-choices-ranked
We know they're busy trying to remove ANY airport limits, so we've taken time to rectify this bizarre omission
In 2024, 24 GHG permits were issued by the EPA to data centre operators in Ireland for diesel generators. These permits are for facilities with thermal input >20 MW, the equivalent energy to power 13,000–16,500 homes.
Will DCs be asked to conserve energy?

We do not have to double down on fossil fuels. We can choose a different path.
My piece in the Journal this week.
A blustery day with sunny spells and rain. We had all that during our presence outside the Dáil today! We think we're now actually at week 382 - hard to keep track! #NoMoreDataCentres#KeepIrelandLNGFree#KeepThePassengerCap#ClimateAction#ClimateJustice@darraghobrientd.bsky.social
Week 379 (despite what the sign says😀) and it was lovely to have @magdalenasedlmayr.bsky.social join us. Great outreach today! #KeepIrelandLNGFree#NoMoreDatacentres#KeepDublinAirportPassengerCap
Week 378. Some of our signs showing a lot of wear and tear. Would be nice if we didn't need them any more. But the way it is, seems like our Government is trying to INCREASE emissions - between LNG, data centres & airport expansion! Contact your elected representatives to demand they ActOnClimate!
Hope everybody is okay. This happened just after our protest for safer streets in Cabra. It underlines the need for safe cycling and walking infrastructure.
Week #374 We managed to escape a downpour! Increasingly erratic weather is part & parcel of the climate crisis that our Govt seems intent on making worse - with plans to abolish the Dublin airport passenger cap, build fossil fuel import terminals, support of nitrates derogation etc.
Last year, we urged the Irish government to introduce a nationwide ban on fossil fuel advertising.
They chose not to act.
But across the globe, cities and countries are stepping up—reclaiming the narrative and taking bold action.
Ireland, meanwhile, remains a climate laggard.

An appalling proposal is hidden at the end of the Government’s Bill on the airport cap; it would exclude decisions under the legislation from the current obligation on almost all public bodies to consider their climate impact and to be consistent with climate objectives.
Our action going totally viral on Twitter news right now!

Week #373 (It's hard to keep track - we've been protesting for climate justice for so long, I think we can be excused for displaying the wrong number occasionally). #KeepThePassengerCap#KeepIrelandLNGFree@fiannafailparty.bsky.social@darraghobrientd.bsky.social Fine Gael
Week 372 of protest as Govt demonstrates cognitive dissonance, trying to ram through a State LNG import terminal as the climate crisis deepens and Ireland is battered by rain and floods. Contact your TDs & tell them to #KeepIrelandLNGFree put a #MoratoriumOnDataCentres and #KeepThePassengerCap
The ongoing extreme weather and flooding across Ireland should trigger unprecedented climate action from our government.
The question is though, will they act?
It's time for Ireland to ban fossil fuel advertising!

Week 371 protesting for climate justice outside the Dáil. Meanwhile, Minister Darragh O’Brien is trying to ram through legislation to allow him to approve a state LNG terminal. Here’s an action you can take on this NOW!

Week 370 demanding climate justice, while our Govt pursues new fossil fuel infrastructure in the form of an LNG import terminal in Co Clare and continues to facilitate more and more energy and water-guzzling data centres. The utter madness of it!
