Fantastic to see this out - lovely work, @schluk.bsky.social! #MicroSky

A major part of my PhD is out in ASM’s mSpectrum! We tracked pathogen interactions in children with CF including 𝘗. 𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘢, 𝘚. 𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴 and 𝘏. 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘻𝘢𝘦. 𝘗. 𝘢𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘢 showed reduced antagonism already in early childhood. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

One Christmas at uni I worked in a high street clothes shop. The work was fine, but they played exactly five songs on the PA in constant rotation. It was torture. I lasted three days.

Here's Katie Noble, the winner of 2026's Early Career Microbiologist of the Year prize, talking after her win on Tuesday🏆 We agree with Katie that all the finalists' talks were exceptional and a massive well done to everyone involved!

Thank you so much @jtsangwrites.bsky.social for this lovely article on our #Ancientbiotics research 💜 #MicroSky

Can a 1,000 year old remedy teach us something about modern antimicrobials? I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with @friendlymicrobe.bsky.social and @tosinorababa.bsky.social to learn about their work on Bald's eyesalve. Details on my blog: microbialmenagerie.com/balds-eyesal... #AMR #MicroSky

OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

Bird nerds, can red kites have a colour morph with a pale belly? Saw a large, kite-shaped raptor riding thermals very high up today but it had a whitish underside. Definitely not a buzzard. (Or had something interesting wandered from a falconry display at Warwick/Kenilworth Castle?)

Für jeder die Deutsch sprecht, und interessiert sich für #Ancientbiotics. @tosinorababa.bsky.social war der Kopf hinter dieser Forschung! #MIcroSky

What‘s the biggest, most exciting or nagging unanswered question in biology? What do you really, really wish we knew the answer to? I’m crowdsourcing responses to these Qs for my welcome talk to new Biology undergrads next week. I’d love to know your thoughts - thank you in advance!

I was wondering this - 15ish years ago I was asked to give out awards at my old school, and there were kids doing HNCs alongside GCSES. What’s better/different about the new GCSEs? Is this GNVQs again, or something sustainable?

Mark Shepstone@mrshepstone.bsky.social

The weird thing about this, is there’s nothing really new here. A school can already offer courses in business, construction, childcare and so on, should it so choose www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

This is why I think it's so important to push back against the personification of LLMs. If a person shoots someone while wearing a hand puppet, they can't claim the hand puppet did the murder.

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

Referring to the harm as being caused by LLMs, when it is caused by people, actually serves to exonerate the people as if they did not make explicit decisions.

god, i was born in the wrong era. imagine being around in the Cambrian period. you could just evolve something simple like shell or legs that nobody had thought of before and coast on that your whole life

Ten years ago Tami, Roy, and I released a movie we made of antibiotic resistance evolving in real time. I thought maybe a couple thousand people tops would see it. I couldn't have imagined it would be seen millions of times, and be taught from middle school through the graduate level worldwide

So (if I understand this correctly), the way AI (companies) will "solve" all the major problems in maths, biology, and medicine in the next 5 years will be by stealing and building on the ideas of researchers naive enough to think their chats with AI companies would be private.
