The ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous DNA substitutions (dN/dS) encodes information about selection pressures. This study develops a model of dN/dS in recombining bacterial populations, offering insights on how horizontal gene transfer shapes the genome. 🧪 #AcademicSky #evolution plos.io/3Wcy9lT

It's several orders of magnitude worse than a modern HIV screening test, and we only use those in the context of a two-step screening-confirmatory testing process. That's my best attempt at contextualizing for an audience that doesn't live in Bayes world.

i learned that my university leadership is making yet another trip to Silicon Valley. This is infuriating - and I simply do not understand how leadership does not see that gov and industry are aligned (at this particular moment - not always) to devalue the work we do.

This administration's science policy is very clear - funnel federal spending away from (non-profit) universities and toward (for-profit) companies. At the same time, raise the taxes on universities and lower the taxes on industry.

It's partly why I was gobsmacked seeing who got National Medals of Science and National Medals of Technology and Innovation at some glitzy event (with "Science" in a gold plated giant font) that OSTP and Trump had yesterday. i.e. No scientists.

ap.washington.eduPosition Details - Academic Personnel & Faculty
Maitreya Dunham@maitreya.bsky.social

Exciting news: @uwgenome.bsky.social will be hiring for two tenure-track faculty positions this year, one open rank and one assistant professor. Both are “Genome Sciences” interpreted broadly so we welcome applicants working in a variety of fields and methods. Ad will be out shortly.

Ran is cooking with: ‘the only data point I have about this candidate is this: “they had an important task that could determine the rest of their career, but it required a little effort and personal reflection, so they used AI to complete it.”’

Ran Blekhman@blekhman.bsky.social

My inbox is being flooded with fully AI-generated emails from prospective students. I tried to work out why I can't bring myself to read them, and ended up with some thoughts and advice for writing cold emails in the age of AI. My new post: blekhman.substack.com/p/why-i-am-n...

The best cold emails I’ve gotten looked nothing like these AI ones all do. Not did they look anything like one another. What they all had in common was they were clearly a real person interested in the science first and a position as a means to that and not vice-versa

Michael Caley@michaelcaley.bsky.social

this is by far the best "I quit my AI job over safety concerns" essay yet because it is the first one that is able to talk about safety concerns in practical terms and that understands "safety" as a topic with extensive literature in analogous fields www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
