On CBC, Nokha Dakroub from The Radical Centre podcast offers her big takeaways from the night: "I think Mississauga found a Mamdani and Oshawa found a Mamdani, and unfortunately Brad Bradford wasn't Mamdani enough."

Turnout seems likely to be up compared to the past few elections, even taking into account the city's growth. Chow's the first candidate to crack half a million votes. And Bradford's 396k would have been enough to win any previous election save 2000 & 2018

Did that prediction galvanize previously unenthused Chow voters who had been on the fence about voting? Is it (to quote a joke I've often made), that nobody really likes Bradford that much?

CP24 reports that Chow camp has told them that Toronto results are waiting on voters still in line in Regent Park and Scarborough.

Trump on DC: "Nobody wanted to eat out. They were afraid. Even if you were in the restaurant, people would walk in and like the Wild West, 'Hold it up!' Everybody is standing there. Can you imagine? A fancy restaurant. They were robbing the whole restaurant. It's crazy."

NEW: The iPhone Duo screen-cracking issue is real. Apple hasn’t given stores or customer service representatives guidance but the company is investigating it. Several have personally sent me their images and stories of their new $2000 device breaking within hours. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Reminder to self: I don't have a copy of Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! (What I always think of when I see Zawinul's name.) Should get around to fixing that one of these days.

Turns out this album has a fairly stacked credits list. Backing vocals from the Dixie Hummingbirds. Piano by Ray Bryant, Keith Jarrett, Hank Jones, & Joe Zawinul. Arranged by Roberta Flack. Produced by Flack & Joel Dorn.

Walked into a local record store, and guess what was sitting right at the front of their new arrivals bin? "Funky" said the handwritten note on it

I'm not sure if a gospel funk rendition of the Mahā-mantra is the most late-60s/early-70s thing I've heard, but it's certainly the most I've heard in a while.

It's the oft overlooked final child of his Berlin era, but I've been listening to Lodger a lot lately and I think I might actually like it as an album to just put on & listen to more than "Heroes"

I can see why it's the "…oh yeah, and that one" album. On initial encounter it seems more conventional than either Low or "Heroes" — no mostly instrumental second side, songwriting that's more guitar-forward. But it also is more eclectic — old Bowie crashing into new Bowie crashing into world music

Had to be out in Etobicoke last weekend, Scarborough this one. And look, trying to measure electoral support solely from lawn signs is a mug's game, but I'd bet there's an inverse relationship between the density of Bradford signs & your distance from Beaches—East York

Making shakshuka for breakfast and suddenly remembered the time a restaurant offered to make a coworker a vegan version "Isn't that just a bowl of tomato sauce?"

Though on the subject of things that have gotten better over the past 30 years: the widespread availability of vegetarian (though unfortunately not vegan) options in restaurants It's almost shocking these days to find a menu with only the classic contempt salad on it

One of my favourite ukiyoe subjects is the famed swordsman Miyamoto Musashi (宮本武藏 1584-1645) fighting a nobusuma in the mountains of Tanba (丹波国). A 'nobusuma' (野衾) or 'tobikura' (飛倉) is a bat that transforms into a yōkai with old age.

Aren't generally cleared in winter? Flood? Closed off for sewer or MTO work? Oh, so they *are* bike lane replacements.

Sean Marshall@seanyyz.bsky.social

There are plenty of problems with ravines: they’re often isolated from the street network. They aren’t generally cleared in the winter. They can flood. They’re dark at night. They are closed off for sewer or MTO roadwork. They are just a small part of a complete network.

Just because you ride a lot doesn’t mean you understand the needs of the city’s cyclists — especially children, women, and immigrants. The ravines are great. For daytime recreational rides.

Matt Elliott@graphicmatt.com

"Look, nobody rides more bikes than I do. I rode 10,000 kilometres last year," brags Bradford. He says he's "the only candidate that has a plan to build new cycling infrastructure — we're just going to do it in our ravine network."
