Here's an idea for editors, let's do a little roleplay. Writer: "I have a contrarian take!" Editor: "Is it fucking stupid?" Writer: "Well yes, but it bucks the consensus. No one else is saying it." Editor: "Is that because the consensus is correct?" Writer: "... yes but... " <hang up>
Aging as an adult is, every ten years or so, realizing there is a new cohort of adults, who you consider as peers, who were children during some essential change that happened increasingly late into your own adulthood. And then remembering that there are the elders for which you are that newcomer.
a somewhat underrated long term impact of trump is that a sizeable portion of people have never been politically active in a non-trump world. I have never cast a ballot in a presidential election that didn't have his name on it and I'm almost 30. He's politics to a huge chunk of people.

"Pittsburgh’s land value tax’s initial success and broad popular support eroded away due to degraded state capacity. Disentangling the value of land from the value of the building on it requires administrative work. But over time the quality of Pittsburgh’s property assessments deteriorated."

Yes and also this sort of 'uniparty' nonsense feels so hollow deployed in the midst of a national stove-touching. It turns out the difference between a 'milquetoast corporate Democrat' and Trump was really big! President Harris would not be driving trans soldiers out of the military!
youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"

I needed to keep quiet about this but this is what I was working on earlier this year. My publication “Harming Children: The Effects of the UK puberty-blocker ban” was evidence used for this! I had to submit a lengthy affidavit via NZ local trans group PATHA. Let’s hope we can overturn more now.

it's not the only problem in the world but it seems very clear to me that better ADHD support leads to better real-world outcomes, and that the delta between outcomes for the well-supported and unsupported is frequently enormous
Systematic review relevant to the discourse on diagnoses and meds. "ADHD was associated with increased all-cause mortality, suicide mortality, unintentional or intentional injury mortality, and natural-cause mortality, whereas ADHD medication use was associated with reduced all-cause mortality."

People will mock this as small beer politics but predatory behaviour by parking companies has been a major source of frustration and financial cost for millions, and for many years.
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced changes to car parking fines - Drivers will have a 5-minute grace period to decide whether to park and 10 minutes to leave after a parking session ends - A £20 maximum charge on appeal for minor mistakes, such as entering the wrong number plate

Just checked and of course, the last time there was a Commons vote on this back in 2018, Badenoch voted against the proposals to decant and get on with the restoration of the Palace of Westminster, as the cross-party joint commission had strongly recommended.
There's obviously a serious point here, but it's quite funny optics for the Conservative party to complain that it used to be so much quicker to build a stately home.
More generally, I find it annoying that websites have big colorful “SIGN UP!!!” buttons and small, indistinct “Log In” buttons. I do one of these once, the other many times. I get it. New customers is a KPI, that’s what you get your promotion on. But that’s a mistake on your organization’s part.
I needed to know what day the semester ends at my own university; it only took me a web search and 8 separate clicks to find
