Introduction post! Hi I'm Steve, and I've been working in Unreal for something like 20 years now. I'm back working in AAA Game Dev again and even some VR dev but please enjoy the Virtual Studio showreel of my work from the past few years. I have a ton of fun making magic happen, hope it shows 😅

I first heard 10:15 on a Saturday Night back when I was in high school, right when I was getting into the weirdest sounding alternative music I could find. The Cure's early stuff was raw and appealing to a rebellious teen. Never thought I'd hear it as the S2 intro music to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Finally getting around to watching Edgerunners and love love LOVE that every interface in the show (phones, texting, hacking mini-game) is straight out of the video game. Even the cyber-phone ringing.

Our patron saint: people who are not engineers recommending carbon fiber because it is "strong" and "lightweight"

We should definitely not include tags like "horror" or "walking simulator" or "made with ai" because people shouldn't be allowed to avoid a thing *I* like because I have invested large amounts of my personal fortune to back it isn't the argument he -- whoops he didn't actually say that but uh, YEAH🤷

Kim Hu@kim-hu.com

I can't believe he's still at it, it's been days

Like the only thing Tim Epic is focused on now is making as much money as humanly possible, so any conversation about ai in Unreal should be focused through the lens of "how much money have you invested in ai companies" and NOT "why are you so HAM about forcing ai into Unreal." The reason is $$$$$$

By the way the database filled back up again in 4 days and it's all bots. The fact that the site owner has to eat the cost for this is actually a pretty big issue...

Mulm 🤝 Lhannan@mulm.bsky.social

So a little over a year ago I made a forum and then just ignored it. Now the database for it has reached its limit of 250mb despite having no users, as the forum logs visits and enough bots visited to warrant 250 mb of space. Even after I cleaned the db a bit to get access to it it has 600k entries.

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

One very cool thing about being late diagnosed AuDHD is I can go to a car show with some friends and then go out to lunch with one of those same buddies and have a GREAT time and then get home and collapse into a nap for 2.5 hours because I'm exhausted and sleep deprived 😮‍💨

This is an old video (map looks better now) but a while ago I was setting up a Polaroid camera and to get what felt like a pretty realistic film grain result, I was actually turning on path tracing for a sec and not giving it time to denoise

Damn, Tim, if the big mean valve corp is running everything with its woke AI disclaimers, why not start your own storefront for the little AI guy? It can't be that hard for an AI genius coder, right?

It always comes back to this for me; if AI was so good, such a disclosure would be a selling point. If AI was everything these slop jockeys said it was, they should be proud to let people know their game was AI made. But the proof is in the pudding, and they can't stand that people don't want it.

Another game where 100% of the voice "recordings" are a generic ai voice. For Fuck's Sake Hire Some God damned Voice Talent IT ISN'T THAT EXPENSIVE YOUR GAME WILL SOUND 1000x BETTER FUCK

This is a war crime, and specifically forbidden in the Geneva Convention.

while you port and emulate games, I ported Jira to my PSP

I am once again begging developers to stop asking me to update my GPU drivers I PROMISE you that your game will NOT look significantly better or run at a significantly higher framerate because my drivers are maybe, at best, two months "out of date"🙄 Maybe if I'm like, FOUR YEARS out of date. MAYBE

[Clippy in 2026]: Hey! It looks like you're in the middle of a Teams meeting so I've helpfully signed you out of Teams! [AI Clippy in 2027]: My bad, I shouldn't have said that the CEO is a dumbass, in writing, in an email and then cc'd the CEO in said email before sending. I'll do better next time.

Follow me on my journey to Mass Effect! May 2015 - traveling cross country with 2 land clouds. (both no longer with us) Car is packed with a topper; auditioning on the road. We'd decided to move less than a year ago. I'd go ahead, set up the new apartment, everyone else would follow 2 weeks later.

I'd be excited about this if Jon Bois was involved and also if they didn't just shut down an entire creative studio 😮‍💨

EA Sports has announced that it is working on a new open-world football game that the company calls "Project Gridiron," which seems to be separate from Madden and College Football. https://bit.ly/4z63a9U

I called out the "closing expert" on my bank loan yesterday for using ai to write their emails. They were getting facts about our loan closing CONSISTENTLY WRONG and I was tired of correcting them, multiple times this week. I HIGHLY recc calling it out when you notice it and it's causing issues 🤷🙄

Beyond excited I get to have a lunch today. Problem with being a manager on a fully remote team: your lunch break is 3 other time zone's working hours 😮‍💨

So once, years ago, I was seeing this woman and it was late so we ordered some Mexican food. But the restaurant closed so the order was cancelled. Instead we choose Chinese food, and we were hungry so we put in some shameful orders.

Andrew Wilson specifically called out how successful Battlefield 6 has been. Labor has rarely been able to directly share in the success of video games, and almost never at the largest scale. Now? The people who make these wildly successful games can't even keep their jobs.

I will give AAA execs credit on one thing. They have correctly identified that games are too big, too expensive, and take too long to make. Where I think their brains are rotted out is that they think keeping the scale and getting rid of the labor is the answer. FA is hurting us. FO will hurt them

I know it's my job to feel this way, but I think we've made the coolest thing that's (about to be) available on Quest 3. I'm so proud of our team. Our game is ridiculous. I can't wait to get people in it.

But also paying TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS for the console that allows the pleasure of paying twelve dollars per month for having maybe two good weeks of ad free gaming per month 🙄

a cartoon directed by ben "bugs" hardaway had a model sheet with a rabbit labeled [bug's bunny], and this eventually became the name "bugs bunny" so what i am saying is that technically "bugs bunny" is a term like "frankenstein's monster"

Coming to the slow realization that if you know how brute forcing passwords work, you know that these are only the FIRST 8 compromised PHP keys. There will almost certainly be more. Because

Every single time a professional voice actor has said "hey I have an idea, can we try another take" in every single session I've ever directed I have treated it like it was a "if someone asks you if you're a god" corollary: you. say. YES. Every time. Have always gone with THAT take.
